Here’s to Short Pencils

May 13th, 2009 @ 6:30 pm by Mrs. Yorkie

A wise woman once told me, “A short pencil is better than a long memory.” With exactly one month to go until our wedding, I’m quickly realizing how very true that little adage is.

Here's to Short Pencils : wedding schedule Pencil

(Source)

Fittings, appointments, and unfinished details are all vying for my time and attention, and I find myself worrying that I’ll inevitably forget something. In the past, I’ve had a tendency of spending way more energy fretting about getting things done than what is required to actually accomplish them. It’s one of those crazy little quirks of mine that I’ve been working on.

I’ve found that making lists helps me combat those little pangs of anxiety that creep up on me at various hours of the day and night.

(A good cup of chamomile tea and long runs do wonders for me, too!) There’s just something reassuring about seeing each individual task and responsibility arranged in a manageable column, rather than having one massive impossible tangle of mental notes. I’ve taken to carrying around a small notebook, perfect for jotting down those nagging thoughts, so that I won’t have to try and remember them all.

Here are some of the items scrawled on my list of things to still do:

  • Hair and makeup trials (Way overdue!)
  • Finalize ceremony readings
  • Help select ceremony and reception music
  • Finish aisle runner
  • Finish monogram wreath
  • Design and print programs
  • Design and print menus
  • Assign reception seating
  • Table name signs and photos
  • Bake favors
  • Out of Town bags
  • Learn to dance

As lengthy as my list seems, I know that these are all things that I can easily take care of and scratch off one by one. (Well, with the possible exception of learning to dance… yeah, that one’s probably going to take a while!) Anyway, scratching items off of lists is yet another thing short pencils are good for!

Do you find yourself becoming more anxious as your wedding day approaches? What are some things that help you manage your emotions?

I am the same list person. I will put things I’ve done but forgotten to put on my list just so I can scratch them off and feel the satisfaction. You’ll get it all done!

I’m a list maker too. Just checking my way through to the end. What scares me is all the things I haven’t even thought of yet!

Everything that pops into my head gets written down or put into a google document. All the bridesmaids have access to my google documents too… so that our to do list is very very dynamic.

I haven’t even done anything about a veil yet. I’m thinking of DIYing it, but if it doesn’t come out well, then what? No time to buy one!

I am pretty anxious but it is compounded by the fact that I am graduating from University on Saturday as well. I have been having a lot of anxiety dreams about my wedding going wrong and me forgetting something important like the rings or my veil etc. I have made lists to calm my nerves and also I think knowing that I have one month after school and before the wedding to get everything accomplished. I don’t have a job so I can devote all my time to the wedding.

@doctorgirl. I like your google list idea. having access for bridesmaids is a great idea so they always know what is going on! I might borrow that! =)

I TOTALLY agree!!! My wedding is on June 13th too and I am feeling like there is just so much to do and I have started to have those dreams again, like right before the first day of school. You know the one…you show up for the first day of school and you have no idea where you are supposed to go, you forgot your schedule and you dont have any supplies…in other words you have forgotten everything and you are totally unprepared…yep those are the dreams.
I just need to remember that all those “things” I keep feeling that I am forgetting are the same ones most people wont remember, they will not change the fact that after my FH and I say ‘I DO’ we will be in fact married and thats all that matters!!
Everything else is icing :-)

The gym helps me out, when my mind feels like it is going to explode I definitely go work out. I have a purse full of old to do lists that I just cannot throw away until weeks later -just in case, it is horrible.

Lists help me so much! If I don’t write it down then I can cannot stop worrying about it… sure I still worry about it, but I don’t get anxiety over forgetting it if it is on the list :)

I didn’t become anxious per se, but was definitely printing menus and programs a few days before we left. Get whatever you can get done NOW…it sneaks up on you!

@luckeyme09: You sure have a month full of major milestones ahead of you. Congrats on graduating!

@DG: I know what you mean! What’s really helped me is looking at others’ lists on the boards. I’ve found a few “oh yeah!” items that way.

Oh geez, your list is making me nervous. I have a BIG three-day project at work starting tomorrow, so I’ll be a bit absent from WB…and wedding-planning in general…but I’m taking some vacation days starting next week to get stuff DONE!

I would be lost without my lists. Yes, they’re long, but it feels oh SO good to cross stuff off of them!!!

I like your last item on the list!!! Yes, lists, we’ve got them!!!!! They seem to grow rather than shrink, and we’re certainly down to nubs, pencil nubs. :)

I do this when I can’t sleep. My brain is just going and going so I write it all down, and BAM! Sleepy time!

Yay for lists!
I love lists. And I hate waiting on replies or for people to commit to requests. I like to say that our wedding planning is complete, but then I see your list and I am like “wow”….attention to detail.

May I ask what day you have planned for your nuptials?

I sit at work all day and think of things that I can’t forget, knowing I will. So, I write my thoughts on post-it notes then stick them on my calendar at home. Just yesterday my fiance was making fun of how my neon green post-its have taken over our calendar. You can’t even see the pretty picture of Italy on it any more. :) I said with a month out, it’s what is keeping me sane! Leave my post-its alone! One day during a weak moment, he confessed that he likes the post-its because it keeps him in the loop. Do what you gotta do ladies!
