About Mrs. Labrador

I don’t know if it’s a tradition everywhere, but in the South, when you get married, you announce it to EVERYONE. Even before internet stalking-er, social networks like Facebook emerged, the news of an impending marriage spread like wildfire where I’m from. Soon after getting engaged, my mother mentioned putting an announcement in our hometown newspaper (as if a small town couldn’t spread the news by word of mouth efficiently enough).

I decided to entertain her and emailed the newspapers to see what it takes to publish an engagement announcement. Much to my surprise, it costs money to run them. Maybe I’m the only one who didn’t know this already, but I was just always under the impression that since you were providing them with “news”, they would just put it in for free. It makes sense to make money off of them though, especially in an era when newspapers are all on the rocks. But now we’ll be out $15 for my hometown paper, and $30 for Mr. Lab’s.

What’s funny about this whole newspaper announcement-thing is that I’m no stranger to being featured in my hometown’s paper.  My town is so small that the majority of the paper is designated for school news. Because I was so involved in academics, athletics, and extracurriculars, I regularly appeared in the paper. I still have all my clippings that my grandpa would bring me (he loved seeing me in the paper) and occasionally look back at them. Here’s some of my favorite blasts from the past:

Hometown Newspaper Engagement Announcement : wedding resources Graduat

Small town = small school. So it wasn’t too hard to be at the top of the class. I missed Valedictorian by a smidgen because the guy who was #1 did work-study instead of academic classes our last semester. :(

Hometown Newspaper Engagement Announcement : wedding resources Pageant

My first pageant win (only my second time competing!). I was also voted Miss Congeniality. This sparked a love for pageants and I competed for the next 5 years to earn money for college.

Hometown Newspaper Engagement Announcement : wedding resources Soccer

Me & my BFF, aka my MOH! She and I were the captains of our varsity soccer team. We’ve been friends for nearly 12 years!

It’s been 6 years since I last appeared in our paper, but every time I look at one of the clippings, I feel like I’ve been transported back in time. The more I think about it, the more I’m glad my mom suggested the announcements. They’ll be cute keepsakes to put in a wedding scrapbook to look back on one day. We’re submitting them this week to run next week. I’ll be sure to post the clippings when we get them!

Is anyone else running an engagement or wedding announcement in the local paper? Were you surprised by the costs?

Cute!

I’m debating doing it…I’m from a small town also (which sometimes makes me not want to put an announcement in, ha!), but my mom really wants us to …we’ll see if she reminds me about it - in her mind, it wasn’t “are you putting one in” it was “when are you doing it?”

I want to, but since I live ina city, where the paper is on the rocks, I’m not sure if it will be possible by teh time our engagement pictures are taken.

I had run our engagement notice in the local newspaper and much to my surprise it cost money and I absolutely had no idea. It cost $20.

We did! It was why we took engagement pictures. However you got off good for $45 total for both papers. Luckily we’re both from the same home town - Richmond, VA. To include a picture and small write up which was just our names, wedding date and parents name was $160!

You all should be thankful it costs less than $50 bucks! In my home”town” of Portland OR, it costs upwards of $100 to run an engagement or wedding announcement! And upwards of $200 for one that is decent sized and has a picture! Needless to say, we let go of that idea REAL quick and decided it wasn’t worth it.

I just submitted our engagement announcement a few days ago (better late than never, right?) We missed the deadline for Mr. DE’s paper, so it will just run in my hometown news. Both are free, though. I thought only bigger papers (like the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette here) were the only ones to charge for running the announcements.

I have looked into running our engagement announcement in several papers: my hometown, my FI’s hometown, & here in Denver where we live now. I’ll also submit an announcement to our university’s alumni magazine. I always assumed the posts would be complimentary, but a couple of the papers I researched charged small fees (around $15). I still think it’s worth it to have the mementos for later & to share with everyone.

Does it make sense to submit the engagement announcement right after having the engagement photo session? Or do you think it is better to wait until closer to the wedding (I’m more than a year out…)?

The main paper in my area charges over 100 bucks for a tiny announcement. I will probably not be doing this just because I find that price ridiculous. For the most part, everyone who I would like to announce our engagement to, already knows.

I’ll run one in my hometown weekly (WV). It’s no Charge. We’ll also run one in an ethnic publication for Fi’s family, no idea what that one does or does not cost. I have no idea what the Washington Post costs or if it’s costs for the local Montogomery County free paper so I doubt we’ll do those.

You’re lucky! Our families have moved so we get to post it in FOUR hometown newspapers. Nope, that’s not cheap, but it’s essential for keeping southern grandmothers happy.

In my home town, the bride and groom normally put the engagement in the week of the wedding(its a once a week paper) included is an “Open Invitation” to people to attend the reception at 9pm to congratulate the couple and to take part in the dancing and drinking(it’s cash bar).

We’ve decided to get married where my FI’s family is from so we are just putting “A wedding will be held on this day in Windsor, Ontario!” Which means no wackos from the local pub will show up or people that I haven’t seen in like 10 years will not show up.

We initially planned on putting our Engagement Announcement in the paper. But… we’re from a REALLY small town (We don’t even have any traffic lights!)… and an announcement in the paper means an invite to the entire town! Seriously… people assume that because they know you, they’re invited. (It’s a small town… we ALL know each other). We can’t invite everyone though… our guest list is already at 500 and every time we go grocery shopping someone stops us to tell us how excited they are for our wedding! I had a friend get married last year and people actually added 4 or 5 people on their RSVP! Again, they assume if they know you, they’re invited. :)

Southern bride here too!

I’ll send my annoucement to my hometown newspaper (cost: $20). Usually couples in my small town put the engagement annoucement in the week before the wedding, which is then “Open Church.”

We’ll be having an invitation only wedding so we’re putting our annoucement in about two months in advance so no one gets the wrong idea.

I wish we did that here! We have city papers but no-one announces weddings in them. I was in the paper in high school for the National Charity League Presents thing, but I wish they did it more around here.

I’m not sure if I’m going to yet either. I’m from a small town but didn’t go to high school there so I guess not as well known.

And don’t discredit your Salutatorian status! Still something to be proud of!

hah! Our hometown paper is like this too. I was in all the time for sports stuff and honor roll. I kind of want to do an announcement because I would like to have the clipping to save. Mr. MJ isn’t so keen on the idea - he’s a big more private. (We’re from the same town.) How will it play out - time will tell!

I don’t live in a small town, but I thought about it. If I remember right I was looking at something more like $75 so I decided against it because I rather put that money towards another expense.

Oh! You are sooo darling, Miss L!!! Looking at your clippings transports me back in time…but also to Americana! Is that cheesy to say? I love it! I think a newspaper announcement is absolutely right here!!

That’s cute that your grandfather saved all the clippings for you. My dad did the same for me so I can take a walk through my life until high school graduation in newsprint :)

My mother was determined we were going to do an announcement in our local paper. She called me almost daily about it until she knew I’d submitted it. The big difference is I’m from a really, really small town so it is still “news to fill the pages” and thus FREE! The thing I never realized until working on the announcement is that most couples in my hometown only send invitations to their family members and use the announcement to invite everyone else. I was actually worried that might turn into an issue for us.

Has anyone else ran into an issue with small town “open invites to everyone” being assumed?
