About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

On This Harvest Moon

May 13th, 2009 @ 9:25 am by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

It started out completely unplanned. It involved cooking dinner in our new kitchen, one glass of wine, two handfuls of sage from our greenhouse, and Neil Young playing on the stereo. The song Harvest Moon came on and we started dancing a little, the harmonica sailing away in the background. We started thinking that this could be our first dance song. We both love it, the lyrics make me sigh, and it’s easy enough to sway around to for three-and-a-half minutes or so. And it’s the kind of song that makes me want to get lost in Mr. CB’s eyes forever.

After a couple more minutes of both of us crooning in the kitchen, I started wondering, ‘When is the full moon around our wedding date, anyway?’ I pulled out my CrackBerry and got to work. The first calendar pulled up a full black circle over our date with a full grey circle over a few other dates. “I think it’s the full moon,” I said, “Oh, no, wait. Maybe it’s no moon.”

Mr. Cowboy Boot took a look. “Nope, that’s the full moon,” he assured me. I couldn’t believe it. The full moon on our wedding date. The barn’s floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking that gorgeous valley and the mountains that surround it, completely white-washed with moonlight. If you’ve ever been at a high altitude on the full moon, you know how magical it is.

Then I got even more curious. What’s the actual “Harvest Moon”? I Googled to find out it’s the full moon closest to the September Equinox. It provides farmers with extra light as the days grow shorter so they can finish up harvesting their crops for the season.

So, when’s the September Equinox? September 22nd. That makes the full moon on our wedding date the official Harvest Moon. I’ve been in shock since I found this out, completely in awe of the coincidence. I love it. And, yes, Neil Young’s Harvest Moon is fated to be our first dance song. With lyrics like this, how can it not be?

Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin’
We could dream this night away.

But there’s a full moon risin’
Lets go dancin’ in the light
We know where the music’s playin’
Lets go out and feel the night.

Because Im still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because Im still in love with you
On this harvest moon.

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart.

But now its gettin’ late
And the moon is risin’ high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin’ in your eye.

Because Im still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because Im still in love with you
On this harvest moon.

What’s your first dance song? How did you pick it? Did you have any random coincidences happen with your wedding?

::sigh:: You’re going to have the most amazing pictures. And I think it’s SO CUTE that your first dance song is a nod to an awesome cycle of the moon! :-)

Harvest Moon is our first dance song too!!! We don’t have the awesome coincidence of it actually being a harvest moon, but the song has played a role in our relationship since the beginning. YAY!

Thanks for including the link to StarDate. Our wedding will be the same night as the June full moon, which is coincidentally named the Honey Moon. ;-)

I’m so glad you shared this with the hive & ‘Harvest Moon’ sounds just perfect.

@Mojito: Oooo, your comment has me craving — um, even though it’s not even 10 a.m. yet! — Blue Moon beer…or the brewery’s summer beer Honey Moon! ;-)

That’s a really special coincidence! Our first dance song will be Heavenly Day by Patty Griffin… The first time I heard it I just loved it and said “that’s the song I want to dance to at my wedding” and when I played it for the Mr. he loved it too :)

We had our wedding planned for the full moon, since that is a very important symbol in our relationship… but alas, not to be… we had to change the date early on if we wanted our photographer. Oh well! I’m glad you got one :)

How awesome! I just looked mine up (although I should have figured it out from your post) and our wedding will be during the harvest moon, too! Yay for October. It’s exciting because I was worried about the lighting at our outdoor venue, so I’m glad the moon will be there to assist. Thanks!

Thanks so much for your post! First off that is really sweet and so perfect for you guys, and second I looked up our date and it seems we’re also Harvest Mooners which couldn’t be more wonderful since we will be celebrating at a planetarium with huge glass windows that look at the water and what will be the full moon! How cool! Thanks for sharing that added a little bright spot to the day.

@Miss Bruschetta: I love those beers! And it’s after noon for me, so I’m not a lush like you! :P lol

Miss CB, if you don’t have a million photos from your harvest moon I (along with the rest of the hive) will track you down! haha

Gah. I studied astronomy in school…I hate to potentially be an unwelcome messenger…but a black circle does in fact indicate a new moon, never a full moon. I checked the site- assuming you mean Sept. 22, 2009, it’s barely coming out of new moon (just a thin crescent). If you meant Sept. 22, 2010 then you will indeed have a full moon.

I really hope you meant 2010 because that really is a very cool coincidence. :)

@Lilivati: The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest in date to the September Equinox. The Equinox is on Sept. 22nd. The full moon I’m referring to is the one just after that on October 4th. ; ) I think it was a weird site I was looking at the used a black circle for a full moon.
