Rose Update

May 14th, 2009 @ 6:41 pm by Mrs. Perfume

So after a wonderful reader educated me about the Amnesia rose, I emailed the name to my florist, who hadn’t a clue.

She spoke with her wholesaler who said they looked really awful, almost grayish purple in person. So I went back to searching, having armed myself with a few key terms like, “vintage rose” and “bicolor”. I sent her the names of three different varieties:

  1. La Belle Bicolor Novelty Rose
  2. Peppermint Bicolor Cream with Pink Rose
  3. New Geraldine

She said they can source the La Belle. I think they’re a bit better since they’re more pink than purple (I don’t have anything purple in my color scheme–oy, color scheme?). Anyhoo, my fingers are crossed that they are not too pink or plain/uninteresting/ugly!!! At this point, I don’t really care…although I wonder if I should just go back to the calla lilies. No, Miss P. Shut down your browser and walk away. (I’m talking to myself–a bad sign.)

Oh, and by the way, I also learned from my online education that the cut stage of the flower is important. The more open the flower, the more expensive it is. Since I want a larger head on the flower, that means it’s “premium”. Yes, and we know what that means: up-charging. Oy.

Is your “perfect wedding flower” something very specific?  What kind of flower is it?

I agree with Rye Bread, go with roses. Callas are everywhere!

My flower of choice is a garden rose. I’m not really sure how much they are and how hard they are to find, because I haven’t met with the florist yet. I’m also in love with ranunculus. Should be fun to see how much this is all going to cost. Ha!

I have a cousin in the floral industry. SCORE!!! He’ll be ordering everything wholesale for me, and my father (who is an engineer/business law by trade) and I will be arranging them. He’s surprisingly talented. I’m not even engaged yet (but I am definitely scoping everything out and know that the florals I want are bookoo bucks (that I do NOT want to spend!!!). Good Luck on your roses! I definitely would go for those over callas.

I always knew I wanted roses. The color of the rose was uncertain as I liked the red roses A LOT when we thought we were having a fall (Oct) wedding. When it became a spring wedding I started leaning towards lavender roses because my fav color is purple and my color scheme is lavender and eggplant/amethyst. NOW, I am adding hints of chartruese and I have fallen in love with green cymbidium orchids, which I discuss here:

I never would have thought ordhids. Rose and lilies are my fav.

After all that….go for the roses! Callas are pretty but roses are oh so romantic!! Especially pink roses!

Glad you found it! Maybe you could get yr florist to advise you on the various bicolored roses available, then you can make your pick from there?

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you! All the best!

@Miss Rye Bread: @KateMW: @jaclyn: Okay, you’re right!

@jaclyn: Lucky you!!

@KateMW: Flower prices are ridic! I wrote a post about the sticker shock I felt!

@BunnyBlue: I love lily of the valley, too! But at $50 for a small bunch (and it would take several bunches), it wasn’t in the cards/budget. :(

@Miss Hot Sauce: Ohh, green orchids are beautiful!!!

@Vic004: Aww, you’re so sweet for remembering!

@mrspaetz: The florist doesn’t seem to really know very much–she’s a small town start up business! Yikes! I’ll keep my fingers crossed, and thank you for doing the same!!!

Lilacs, oh lilacs… huge bouquets of lilacs, white and purple, with baby’s breath cascading down… but October brides can’t even dream of using any lilacs in their flowers.

I have also always loved grape hyacinths, and think they would be amazing accents, for bouts and corsages. Sadly, again, it’s a flower that an October bride can’t even dream of.

Don’t you hate having expensive taste unknowingly? I am so not a flower person so I just chose a flower based on the photos and not knowing anything about it. Just so happens that it was a peony that is out of season when I need it which = my very own kind of “premium” that would cost out the butt to have! In your own words: OY!

I really love lilacs, and I am trying my utmost to get them at a good price. They are so sweet and lovely, and I had a bush of them in my backyard when I was growing up… but alas, I no longer have access to that backyard!

But I absolutely adore those roses of yours! Beautiful, truly beautiful. I’m going to have bi-colored spray roses in my bouquet, for a smaller, daintier look. I love roses. :) I cannot wait to see your final bouquet!

Since you like the look of bigger roses, you should look into garden roses.

I’m obsessed with having full bloom deep red roses (not sure of the variety name) and kermit mums, unfortunately these colors don’t mesh well with my 3rd wedding color scheme… back to the drawing board, hehe.

I love the pink and green roses. I also don’t know what they are called and I’ve only seen them in Europe but I think they come from Argentina (or at least that is what I was told when I asked the florist about them). I’m totally envious of your new flowers !

I’m using roses, and I’ll be honest, I knew I was going to be a freak about the particular color. So, we went artificial. I know I know, some of you may have a fit at me for it, but I got the perfect size, the perfect color, and they’re done.

I’m using roses too, I never thought to research the different types, so this was very helpful!

I’m also doing hydrangeas, I love them and they fit the color scheme. Luckily both are in season in October!

That is a gorgeous rose–my perfect flower is the lily of the valley, and the red anemone. But I’m sure I will keep changing my mind.

Mine was the Osiana Rose. Their outer petals are almost an ivory color and they gradually become more peachy pink towards the center. I have loved them since I was little but they are so expensive when not in season. For me it was well worth the extra expense.
