I can hardly wait!
About Mrs. Yorkie

The Quest for Cake Continues... Ugh! : wedding cake Eddasc

Well, Mr. Yorkie and I had our cake tasting appointment at Edda’s on Wednesday after work. I’ll have to admit, it wasn’t quite what I expected. (It was kind of disappointing, to be honest.)

When we arrived, I explained to the woman behind the counter (not Edda) that we were there for the tasting. She quickly replied that it was too late, and tastings were over for the day. (Hmm, even though we had an appointment for 5:00pm… and were on time? And they close at 6:30pm?) The woman then checked her book, found my name, and less-than-enthusiastically handed me a huge binder filled with photographs of their cakes. Somewhat confused, Mr. Yorkie and I took a seat at a little table. Even though I knew exactly what I wanted and brought photographs to explain, we browsed through the binder anyway.

A few minutes later, the woman showed up at our table with a tray holding seven little dishes each containing a different flavor of cake, topped with a messy squeeze of white buttercream and two plastic spoons. She walked away and we got to tasting.

From the start, Mr. Yorkie had in mind that we should get a traditional Cuban rum cake. They’ve become fixtures at all of our family get-togethers. The cakes are always nice and moist inside (especially when you get one that’s really drenched!), plus it would be a real Miami treat for all of our out-of-town guests.

Edda’s vanilla rum was on the dry side, but emerged as our early favorite, followed by amaretto and orange. Tasting each of the non-chocolate ones, I came to realize that they were all essentially the exact same cake. The only difference between them were the flavored syrups with which they were soaked (and at times, unevenly so). That struck me as a bit odd, since I’m used to baking flavors into cakes. In the end, we settled on a vanilla rum/orange/vanilla rum combination for our three-tiered cake.

I walked back to the counter to let the woman know that we’d finished tasting and were ready to talk business. I showed her the photographs and explained exactly what I had in mind for our simply decorated cake. I wasn’t too sure that she understood everything I said, so I used some Spanish for safe measure. Even still, she couldn’t quite understand what I meant by the word “taupe” and how it’s not the same as ivory. So, I promised I’d bring some paint chips from Home Depot that she could use as color samples.

When I was satisfied that she understood enough about the creation that we would like for her to make, I asked her how much it would cost. She punched a couple of keys on her pocket calculator and casually said, “six hundred dollars.” Huh? For 100 people? I was expecting more in the $400-500 range, but I didn’t let on. I asked her what kind of deposit was needed to place the order, and told her that I’d want to get the color samples for her first before actually placing the order. What I didn’t tell her is what Mr. Yorkie and I decided as soon as we got to the car: we were going to shop around with other bakers.

Had the woman’s personality been warmer or more, “Gee, I’m really happy you’re here!”, the higher-than-expected quote might not have shocked me so much. (Kind of how it went with my dress. Ha!) It felt like we were bothering her, and she really didn’t need our business. Maybe she was tired or having a bad day; I don’t know. She just didn’t make a good first impression. (Come to think of it, she is the first vendor I’ve encountered in this whole wedding planning process that didn’t congratulate us on our engagement! Hmmm.) I guess I was just hoping for a little more enthusiasm… kind of like Martin Short’s character in “Father of the Bride”. :)

One good way of looking at it is that there’s more cake to be tasted, beginning with Lucila’s on Tuesday night!

My tasting was disappointing too! At least they gave you ENOUGH to try! Our samples were sliced thin as playing cards! We didn’t get any explanation with anything, it was just “here ya go, now eat!”

Wow, that IS disappointing. Thanks for sharing the good AND not-so-good parts of wedding planning. Can’t wait to hear about your next cake tasting.

Whew! As I was reading your post, I was thinking “they better not sign a contract with these people”! I’m glad you decided to look around. I just don’t understand why people in the food/service industry wouldn’t want to have the absolute best customer service. They probably just lost a sale and possibly more depending on who reads this post!

Gosh, I wonder how Edda would feel if she knew how her employees were misrepresenting her! I’m sorry that it was so disappointing, but you’ve made a good decision to shop around before picking one. 500.00 is A LOT of money to spend on a piece of cake that you don’t LOVE! Good Luck!

I must say, that isn’t the first time I’ve heard something like that about Edda’s and her top competitor Ana Paz. I feel like they think they don’t need customer service because so many people are forced to used them because of hotel contracts.

My personal fav is Elegant Temptations in Hialeah. http://www.eleganttemptations.com They are good about working off of pictures and the cake isn’t dry.

I was just recommended to go to them today since my cake is included at The Rusty Pelican and they are one of the recommended vendors. I’ll still give them a try I guess but I’m glad to know what to expect. I’ve seen that the customer service is hit or miss in Miami.

I would love to read more posts from your vendor experiences here in South FL!! Have you visited any flower places yet? I just went to Avant Gardens today and they were fantastic, except I have to wait a week for a quote sadly.

Wow, that’s a horrible tasting experience! I’m so sorry it went that way. :( We have a bakery that most of the reception venues go through, and they were very warm and friendly to us, so we didn’t think to go to anyone else.

I’m glad to hear you aren’t stuck with that bakery (in a contract kind of thing with your reception venue). I hope these other bakeries knock you and Mr. Yorkie’s socks off!!

Urgh…how disappointing. I’m glad y’all are going to check out some other places. That’s a lot of money for…umm…cake…that we plonk down for a wedding…you’d think great customer service would be included for that price. Good Luck on your next tasting!

I’m really glad that you guys didn’t get a cake from them. If they don’t have the heart to sell you a cake then there’s no point!
There are plenty of “fish in the sea”. Good luck on your cake adventure!

Ick, what a disappointing experience… I am ALL about customer service and definitely been put off by that experience too. I’m glad you’re shopping around, I hope Lucila’s is better :) I looked at their website, she has some beautiful cakes.

I’m sorry your experience wasn’t that great…hopefully the next ones will blow you out of the water! I think it’s so important for any wedding vendor to take an extra minute to share a kind word - there are so many competitors out there, a vendor should wow you!

With that said, my cake tasting really “wow’d” me, and we were sent home with extra fabulous cake! Hope you get wow’d too!

I have to say, $600 seems a little high to me, we are also having 100 guests and our cake is 3 tiers but lots of detailed decoration, i wanted it to match my invites. We are in Gainesville, so its a less populated area, but we are only paying $400 for ours.

I feel your pain, I have dealt with several potential vendors that were not very helpful and not very nice, in the end I decided that if they wanted the business, then they would treat me better, and if they are willing to act like that in this economy, then they probably wont come through on the big day.

Good thing you are shopping around!

Was it the Coral Gables location? We had the EXACT same experience! Their cakes were so dry and tasteless, and no one was nice to us at all.

The best vanilla rum we had was at Edible Creations in Pembroke Pines. They can do the most stunning designs. You should add them to your list.

It was disappointing, but I learned that it’s OK to pass and keep looking until you find something you’re happy with. Hopefully, I’ll be able to give you a great report on the next tasting! :o)

Bummer! I’m so happy that the two of you decided to weigh your options before signing a contract. I had a similar experience with a seamstress whom I contacted about making a custom wedding gown for me.

agree that you should get someone else if you’re not comfortable with a vendor.

can’t wait for Part 2 of cake story :)
