An Extra Dress?

May 15th, 2009 @ 12:52 pm by Mrs. Crab Cake

A few weeks ago, I trekked to New Orleans for a weekend with one of my bridesmaids. The weekend was supposed to be my bachelorette extravaganza, but no one came. We spent the weekend shopping and catching up. I also got to meet Miss Ballet Flat!

While we were there, I absolutely had to hit up my favorite store, Trashy Diva. Yes, they have a brick and mortar in the Quarter. I didn’t intend on spending any money there. I really just wanted to be able to say I’d visited the place! It was wonderful. Small, but fantastic. There were all the dresses I’ve been lusting after for more than a year. Even my friend was enamored with the place. It was really exciting just to be there and see what some of the dresses looked like in person.

In the back corner there was a sale rack. I love sale racks. And, lo and behold, there was ivory dress (a color which is severely lacking on the website) on that sale rack. I pawed through, in hopes of finding a dress my mom could wear to the wedding. There was one there, in the ’40s fashion, in my mom’s size. I decided to splurge and buy it for her, but not before I put it on to make sure it fit me if she didn’t like it. It really fit me quite well, so I knew we would have to do some altering for mom to be able to wear it. The original price on the dress is $248, which is far more than I would ever pay for a simple sheath dress (with no lining, at that). But it was marked down to $62! Sold!

I immediately called mom and told her I bought her a dress. She wasn’t quiet as excited as I was, which is par for the course, since I get overly-excited. But nevertheless, excited. I carried it home proudly and took it straight to Mom to try it on.

It really didn’t look very good on her.

The problems were two-fold. It was huge on her, and would have needed more altering than we really wanted to do. And she didn’t like the idea of wearing ivory when I’m wearing champagne.

So, reeking of failure, I carried my little vintage treasure home and hung it in the closet for a rainy day.

Here I had this beautiful dress that was wonderfully bridal. I already had my rehearsal dress and shower dress. What was I going to do with this thing?

Then I got to thinking, on a completely different train of thought, that Mr. CC was going to have a hard time getting me out of my dress after the reception. And if he did manage, what is under that thing is not exactly sexy or romantic. Yuck. And I surely can’t get myself out of my dress.

And this was the point at which the two dresses collided and a getaway dress was born.

Not a cute face… and pardon my ponytail… I worked all day!

I’m so excited about this new development! Sometime after the bouquet and garter toss (yep, we’re doing that!) me and my posse will head upstairs for a quick change-a-roo and a last goodbye. Then Mr. CC will whisk me off to our wedding night suite in our secret getaway car (secret to me, anyway) in this fantastic vintage dress. I will definitely have to put my heels back on to run away in this dress. The skirt is extraordinarily long and makes me look shorter than I already am. I probably should have thrown them on to take these pics, sorry.

The mister thinks I look like my mom here…

Are you wearing a getaway dress? Where did you find it?

I love your dress!! The top is sort of vintage-y!

Yes, I’ll be wearing a getaway dress…but it’s more a mid-reception-change-out dress so I can DANCE! My mother is making it. I told her if she has time, go ahead, if not, I’ll just keep my wedding gown on.

Great idea to stumble upon!!! Yey!

It’s a beautiful dress, and very classic and bridal. I like the whole “get away dress” idea, though we won’t be doing it for our wedding, as, well, we have no where to go. It feels very old fashioned and classy to me :)

GETAWAY DRESS?!!?!?!

Miss Crab cake… you are a genius! I never thought of this. That’s actually a very smart idea that a groom might appreciate! You have inspired me to find a getaway dress of my very own. I was looking for a white dress to get ready in since I want to be bridal all day :D so maybe I could use it for both.

You look so cute in this! I bet it is awesome with your shoes! And I WISH I looked that good after a full day’s work! :)

I like that dress on you!

I’m wearing a getaway dress, but only because we leave super early the next day for our honeymoon and I have to leave my dress with my parents before we drive to the airport hotel that night.

How cute is that dress on you???

I am totally wearing a getaway dress. My wedding dress is big, embroidered and heavy, and I know after a few hours of dancing and a (few) drinks, I’ll be ready to par-tay! I haven’t found mine yet, but I plan on going shopping in Denver with my mom next weekend while I’m there. I figure she couldn’t be there for my wedding dress shopping, so she should help me pick out my getaway dress. :)

I had brought a dress like that to my wedding. I changed into it halfway through the reception, because everyone was stepping on my dress on the dance floor! Plus I was way to hot in it. So I think you will definitely need this dress.

LOVE IT!!! and an excellent idea to get away frojm the wedding night - spanx dilemma!

I personally think that the section of the strap just above the bust that is gathered would be more flattering if it were more gathered - making the neckline even more sweetheart-ish and bringing the strap almost to a point ebfore it flares back out again over the shoulder.
Either that or get rid of the gathering and make the neckline more of a V.

it’s a bit in between the 2 right now and although it’s beautiful, a few tweaks would make it much more flattering.

Great Find!

I love the dress and you look absolutely beautiful in it! Great idea to use it as a getaway dress!

I have thought about having a getaway dress or something to change in to after our first dance and pictures and stuff. Mainly because I have also fallen in love with the destination type wedding dresses that are so flowy and fun lengths. Still undecided though.

That dress makes your wait look teeny tiny! Love it! I agree with the pp who said with a little tweaking to make the straps a little thinner, the dress would be an absolute stunner. And I’m sorry to hear that no one could make it to your bachelorette party :( Glad the dress made the trip worth it, though.

I love your vintage find! New Orleans is such a fun city. Next time I’m there I’ll have to go into the Trashy Diva. I too am wearing a getaway dress for after the reception. We’re hitting the town and wanted something to dance in and not mind if it got a little dirty. Here is what I found:

your dress is very cute!
i was looking for a getaway suit and happened upon a gorgeous dress, so i’ll be changing into that for our exit. we’re having everyone come out to bars after the reception so it works out perfectly… plus even though it’s a sheath it’s stlil ivory and fancy and i’ll still feel like “the bride” for the rest of the evening!

OMG I love that dress!!! It was so awesome to meet you too!! :)

I found a getaway dress at JCPenney’s. Hilariously enough, the pattern is VERY similar to the pattern on my favor boxes. Haha!

So fun! Would you consider a slight hem on the dress so it doesn’t make you look “shorter than [you] already [are]“?

@missrachelk: @missrachelk:

I was going to say the same thing re: the straps!

I think the dress is beautiful, but this is something to consider!
