FAN-tastic Favors : wedding diy favors tutorial Fan1

Presenting our sandalwood fans! I purchased 50 of them on sale through The Knot shortly after Mr. Yorkie and I got engaged. They were actually my first wedding-related purchase, if you don’t count that copy of Martha Stewart Weddings. At the time, I knew that our date would likely be in June. While we hadn’t yet decided on a venue, we definitely wanted it to be outdoors. So, in an effort to keep our fairer guests cool while we say “I do”, we’ll be providing these fans. I think they’ll make a much nicer alternative to them flapping our ceremony programs!

Here’s what I used to make them:

FAN-tastic Favors : wedding diy favors tutorial Tagmat

  1. Martha Stewart Crafts cardstock in “Putty”
  2. Martha Stewart Crafts “Wedding Cake” stamp set
  3. Craft Smart pigment ink pad in “Chocolate Brown”
  4. Clear acrylic stamp blocks
  5. Marvy Uchida 1/8″ hole punch (Oops! Wrong project! )
  6. Seam binding in “Fuchsia” from Caramelos
  7. Cotton crochet thread in “Natural”
  8. “George and Basic Shapes” Cricut cartridge

Here’s how I made them:

1. On a 6″x12″ piece of cardstock, use Cricut to cut 1 1/2″ circles using the “shadow blackout” and “charm” functions. (These settings will yield 40 tags on this size of paper.)

2. Select desired stamp and adhere to acrylic block. Stamp design onto tags.

3. Allow tags to dry before removing from backing. Repeat step 2 on reverse, if desired.

4. Holding it at an angle, lightly “swipe” the pigment ink pad along the edges of both sides of each tag to give dimension and an “aged” look.

5. Cut a 4″ length of crochet thread, feed through tag’s loop, and knot the ends.

6. Cut an 8″ length of seam binding, attach it to the fan’s metal loop, and tie in a bow.

7. Add a tag to each fan… and voilà!

Are you providing your guests with anything special to use during your ceremony?

How cute! Pictures of guests during the ceremony, fanning themselves, will be so romantic.
Miss Yorkie, did you stamp the M&K on a 2nd go around after the circle? I have the same stamp set and they dont fit… (or maybe I have it confused with the heart stamp, hmm). Did you use those stamp sets for any other wedding DIY? I’m planning to use mine for our thank you cards as well.

Great question! You’re right, they don’t fit. I did the circle first, let it dry, and then did the letters. I’m also using this stamp set for part of my seating card project, so stay tuned! :o)

I really like this idea. I am actually making our programs into fans! I am going to mount them on foam board and have purchased a bunch of wooden handles that I need to paint still.

Clever using the seam binding rather than ribbon… we were having such trouble finding a good, wide, plain ivory satin ribbon in the length we needed for less than like, a zillion dollars, and then I saw a packet of blanket binding! Voila, cheap easy bouquet wrap. :-)

Very pretty! Now I’m worried about my guests fanning themselves with the programs.

I am planning on buying these same sandlewood fans! Do they seem to be of decent quality (to get through an hour or so)? Your tags are beautiful and look so elegant!

Very cute. I have been eying those same fans for the past month! Our wedding is in March though so I’m not sure there will be a need. You cannever tell with our crazy Texas weather!

@coolray24: I did have to clean them up a bit by trimming the monofilament strands that hold the segments together. No big deal, though. I wouldn’t make them my primary favor, but for the price (80-something cents a piece), they’re nice and will definitely last an hour. :o)

Very cute indeed! I’m a sucker for a scallop. I might suggest to anyone else who wants to make these to use a dye based ink if you are not going to use embossing powder. Some pigment inks just don’t want to dry!

I found the wooden fans at Michael’s over the weekend in the wedding section, and I immediately remembered your favors. They were only $20 for a box of 18 fans. With a 40% off coupon, I am so tempted to go ahead and buy them. You did a great job personalizing your fan-tastic favors!

Miss Yorkie, may I ask what was your ratio of fans to guests? I have decided to do the fans for the ceremony because even though it is not too hot, it can often be muggy here. We are estimating 100-110 guests and was thinking of geting 72 fans. I doubt the men will be using them.

@Miss Hot Sauce: With about 110 guests, I purchased 50, thinking (like you) that only the ladies would use them. Next weekend I’ll know whether I purchased enough! :o)

Miss yorkie,
I have also purchased 54 fans for my wedding of 100-110 thinking along the same lines. My fiance swears that ‘no man would be caught using these fans’ !!! Was the 50 fans enough for your guests? Did anyone feel that there wasn’t enough to go around? Just wondering if I should get some more!
Let me know!

I did Fans for my favors and personalized them by putting little tags on the ends of them.
