Last Minute Petals

May 15th, 2009 @ 6:16 pm by Mrs. Perfume

Pink ribbons, vintage roses, a long veil… I never knew I was that girl!! I’ve talked about her before here. It’s just uncanny how wedding planning turns a person into TG. So, I own it; I’m in love with all that flowery, pink, and sparkly stuff. I surprised myself. I know, it was obvious to everyone, but me.

Aaaaanyway, after I saw this image (like so many other bees) on Martha last week, I decided that I need the petal toss. I never planned on the toss, so this last-minute addition really was a surprise.

Source

I didn’t consider it before because, well, it didn’t appeal to me. Plus, the way the chairs are arranged around the boxwoods in the garden where our ceremony will take place, it would be difficult to get a good aim!

But I thought about it, and it makes sense that the petal toss would happen as we come up the hill from the garden to the lawn where we will have the cocktail reception. Logistically, it’s perfect. We will stay behind in the garden to take pictures as the guests get drinks. And after they’ve loosened up a bit with some bevies, they’ll be handed a cone filled with these:

Pale cream and white freeze-dried rose petals. I got 66 cups for about $60 (and had a 15% off coupon that I found online). There are a few neat things about freeze dried flowers:

  1. They’re amazingly supple
  2. They won’t wilt, stain, or become slippery
  3. They keep for months (even years)
  4. They smell nice!
  5. They’re less expensive than fresh petals
  6. They’re biodegradable

I got them from Flyboy Naturals and they arrived last night (lovingly packaged, I must say)!!! Now I need to make the cones or something to put them in.

Did you surprise yourself with decisions about your wedding, too?

YAY for your petal toss! I can’t wait to see the pictures from that :)
For cones my mom got us those cups ppl put with water coolers… I was skeptical at first, but I saw them last night and they don’t look bad. We’re going to jazz them up with some tulle and ribbon.

I had a friend that did the toss, and to make the cones, she found some pretty color-coordinated paper, and printed the lyrics & music to “their song” on it, rolled it up (glued it together) and tied a ribbon through a hole she punched. They were adorable, and it was a great way to add their special touch to it.

oooh, you are inspiring me to get some petals!!! I am having the florist handle the petals for the aisle, but I want people to throw stuff at us, and since we are doing everything in the same venue, we won’t be able to do the “exiting the church” petal shot. Thanks for bringing this up! :)

I was thinking what we would do as well for a send off…but i dont know if we will do something?? I was surprised at how in Love I was/am with the gown I picked…I knew it would be lace and have beading…but there were a few satin style gowns I had my eye one…but they didnt suit me. The gown that I picked…picked me! I love it and I can’t wait to wear it on my wedding day. PS…Im not a girly girl either…im a t-shirt and jeans kinda girl…the only dresses Ive worn were for prom and my MOH’s wedding…but I loved those and it was such a fun time to dress up…thats why I think it feels even more special for all women because its not often that we get to do this!!!

ohhh freeze dried petals might be perfect for lining our aisle…need to look into that.

I was the anti-THAT girl at the beginning of the engagement and then became the long lace edged veil (not birdcage), lacey sheath dress wearing (not mermaid), pink peony carrying girl. I mean I love the THAT girl I’ve become, I’m just blown away by how girly I can be. Wedding planning will teach you about yourself, for sure.

How wonderful! I never considered freeze-dried petals before! I’m also planning t use rose petals in cones (I was thinking fresh until you changed my mind). I DL’d free templates from Martha Stewart’s Wedding site, and I have another one in a Word Doc that I’m not sure where I found. I don’t know how to share personal files in replies, but I’ll PM it to you so you have options! :)

@PrettyKitty: OMG, everything you describe is me and my wedding: long lace edged veil, gauzey sheath dress, pink ROSES! Uncanny!!! Great/girly minds?

@xLailax: You’re so nice! Thank you!

How many guests will be tossing the 66 cups of petals? The sample I ordered of freeze dried petals didn’t have much of a smell. Maybe I need to try a different kind ?

@mrspaetz: OMG thanks for the heads up ok the doilies! They seem to be much less time intensive than cutting paper cones.

@Lori: 80 people. I figure a little more tan half a cup per person.

I am using the template that Mrs. Cherry Blossom provided. I am in the process of making them now. It is very easy. I am still trying to decide where to buy the rose petals.

Hi there!

A tip from my friends and sister who used petal cones: attach a note to the cone (or print a message on the inside of each cone) explaining that people should thrust the cone upwards while holding the base to throw the petals onto you. At the weddings where I’ve seen petal cones used, people simply tipped the cones over the bride and groom, and the effect wasn’t nearly what we brides dream of.

I figured I wasn’t a fussy bride, and I haven’t really been so far, but I’m starting to freak out as the day gets closer, and I’m afraid I’ll be this crazy person until it’s over!
