About Mrs. Stiletto

Scanner Shy

May 15th, 2009 @ 10:28 am by Mrs. Stiletto

I wanted to register for months and months and months. I couldn’t wait to get that scanner in hand and just go crazy. Last year, Mr. S and I started making an Excel list of everything we wanted to register for, researching toaster ovens and Crock-Pots. And then… time just went by. We hadn’t really talked about registering, or when we were going to do it. Just some time when it was “nice out”. Finally, someone asked us where we were registered, and 2 days later, we were headed downtown to the Crate & Barrel on Michigan Avenue. It was time to get down to business.

We chose to register on such a whim that I felt wildly unprepared. I was a bit overwhelmed.

Once we were trusted with our handy scanner, the associate told us to start on the top floor and work our way down. The top floor is filled with a lot of furniture. As we worked our way around, I refused to scan anything - I wanted to be really committed to whatever we chose. Also, I was very against registering for furniture at CB. It seemed far too extravagant to ask people to buy such high-priced items for us.

And then, I saw these babies…

Yep, this was our first scan - 4 of these bad boys. The Allegro Side Chair is all I could ever hope for in a chair - I’m in love with the green! I’d also rave about how comfortable the chair is, but throughout the excitement of finally agreeing on something to scan, we overlooked testing out the chair. Hmm… moving on…

I had been worried about picking out our dishes. I had a favorite, but Mr. S also had a favorite. We had made a pact that morning to not fight about anything. That pact served us well, and I decided to give in just a tad and let him have his Roulette dishes - it’s all give a little, get a little in marriage, right?

You know that giving a little on the dishes? It meant getting a little immediately after when we turned toward our silverware choices. I’d been in love with the Hazel design for months.

This serving fork really sealed the deal for me with this set - it’s just a fork for a giant. I love it!

Doesn’t this Acacia wood salad bowl look great? We thought so. Mr. S has been wanting a nice bowl for salads.

We loved this cute little dish. It did not, however, make it onto the registry. Necessities, people, necessities!

We spent a lot of time wandering through the glassware. Geesh, CB, can you give us any more options here? It was nearly impossible for us to decide! But the Strauss glasses with their funky square shape was too good to pass up.

Oh, more struggles with glassware. Wineglasses, wineglasses, wineglases. We opted for the Gala line. I definitely took a step back and let Mr. S make the decision here. They all looked like wine glasses to me.

Our registry experience on Saturday couldn’t have been more perfect. Having many discussions about compromising beforehand made the day what it should have been - fun, exciting, and a day spent together planning a piece of our life. I’d secretly thought that it might not be all that great. We’ve been living together for a couple of years, own a condo together, and have bought so many things for the house already. But I think all of these things actually helped us register. We know what we need, and what we could live without, and what style our home is, and how we’d like it to evolve.

So, that scanner shyness I mentioned at the beginning? Umm, yeah. By the time we hit the second floor at CB, the scanning got a tad bit out of control. $50 shower curtain? Sure! Wine cabinet that we have absolutely no room for? Why not! Good thing you can modify your registry online 18 million times before the wedding.

Did your day of registering end up in a hot mess, or were you and your significant other able to compromise your way throughout the housewares section?

Hot mess! We could not decide on anything and registered for about 5 things before leaving the store. I picked everything out online.

Miss Stiletto - you should’ve signed up for the Crate and Barrel registration event on North Ave. a few months ago - you got to go in before the store opened and they had mimosas, coffee, quiche, muffins, etc. It was great!

I had the C&B cataloug with me, that helped me decide what to register for. We had a great time - but in the end it turned into somewhat of a hot mess! :-)

@AbbyM:
I know! But at the time we just didn’t think we were “ready” to register, whatever that means :) There is one on May 31 on Michigan Ave, and they told us we can come to that if we want…so we’re thinking about it (mostly for the mimosas, ha!). It was kind of fun being in the store while other people were there, surprisingly.

Our registering turned into a hot mess. After 4 hours in macys scanning at random, Mr. B decided that registering is my department and he is no longer interested in participating. Go figure. I now ask him for feedback on specific items, but ultimatey I crafted the final product.

Wow. I wish we had a C&B here!! Also, I love that 5 prong fork. Don’t have me over for dinner; it might go mysteriously missing.

@Miss Mary Jane:
Heee :) I seriously died when I saw that serving fork. It’s too fun! Well, obviously I loved it, as I had to have myself photographed with it…and I hate getting my picture taken, especially when posing with random housewares items in the middle of a store…

Fiance was the scanner. I was in full analysis paralysis mode and could scan nothing… but fiance was like a kid in a candy store. Now that we’re getting gifts, it’s a lot more fun!

Miss S your blog made me laugh because we started our registering at CB on Mich Ave… And then moved on to the Macys on State… 5 hours later we were delirious. We spent an hour debating the merits of Kate spade vs marc Jacobs china, went with the MJ, and then took it off the registry a month later after remembering we have no room in our Loop condo for 12 place settings LOL. Hot mess for sure!

At least you registered for a lot first and then subtracted items from there. I started the registry online and then went to the store and didn’t get the full experience of going crazy. I still have edited the list over and over since then. I liked reading your post because I felt that I registered for expensive items like dinner chairs etc,but we need them in our home, so thank you for making me feel better!

Oh no, don’t get the Hazel silverware!
I registered for that (and received it) and me and my husband hate it. The forks are WAY too skinny and are useless for anything but foods that you stab. Stuff that you have to scoop onto your fork slides right off because the tines are so thin.
Just my recommendation. We’re already in search of new silverware because this issue really is maddening.

The Fiance had the scanner and I had the list. We both put items the registry that we liked and a couple of random things ended up on the list. I find myself editing the registry. When your in the store, I seemed to want everything but we don’t have the space for a lot. I LOVED registering at Crate and Barrel. Macy’s had way toooo many floors and items. We had to do register at Macy’s twice. The Fiance was tired of shopping. lol

Mr Frenchie and I were a lot like you registering… compromising… if he really liked something I give in and if I really wanted something he’d give in, but mostly we agreed on what to get.
We went a BUNCH of times but at the beginning we were really conservative with the scanner gun after a couple trips we got a little scan happy :)

hmm… sounds to me like everyone starts off shy and then ends up scanner happy. I mean seriously, it’s like they hand you a toy and expect you keep yourself under control? ha!

Our first day was a hot mess, we were so overwhelmed, so we had to do it again another day. I also have the Roulette dishes and I love them!

we compromised well–very few arguments, but we had a terrible experience at Macy’s and that made both of us a little unhappy (poor customer service at two different stores)

We registered online first, then went to the store to check out the goods. That worked really well for us, and we had minimal alterations after scanning. The biggest thing was we had registered for some cast iron cookware, and after trying to lift it, it was TOTALLY taken off the registry. They were HEAVY!! How am I supposed to put a 20lb turkey in a 50lb dutch oven? I couldn’t lift it!

How exciting! I LOVE the Hazel silverware you guys picked out, it’s so sleek, I like how the forks look. I’m excited about our wedding registery too, but we have a LOOONG time before we even THINK about it. I will, however, take your lead and set up a list of items I need in Excel - thanks for the ideas Miss S!

We registered for the Roulette dishes too! It was also a compromise for us, as I preferred the collection with the tiny dots. What a coincidence!

We also registered for the Hazel flatware - we LOVE the asymmetrical spoons! We plan on using that as our everyday flatware.

Unfortunately the set we registered for to go with our formal china (which is also from CB - it’s the Cuisine collection, of which that awesome wave bowl is a part) is now being discontinued so we really hope people get it for us soon!!!

I was also really surprised at how much my fiance loved registering at CB…it’s because they have such nice stuff.

Great pics commemorating your registering experience! My fave item is that squarish glass…but the salad bowl is super cool and unique, too!
