About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Our Horse Theme

May 16th, 2009 @ 11:45 am by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

You’ve seen our save-the-date and the gorgeous horse that Mr. Cowboy Boot drew. The horse wasn’t exactly planned for. There were several ranch-themed ideas Mr. Cowboy Boot played with–barns, barn swallows, and prairie grass–before whipping up the image that adorns our save-the-dates. He put a lot of time into “our horse” and it shows. We plan to use this image as a monogram of sorts.

Mr. Cowboy Boot’s horse

Now, because I love this horse as much as I do (and because Devil’s Thumb Ranch has hundreds of horses and a gorgeous stable), the horse theme started to grow. I suddenly wanted to thread horse-related objects and images throughout our decor. To be honest, it’s not like we’re horse people. We didn’t grow up riding nor do we own horses or anything like that, but we do love the animals. They are just so gorgeous.

In light of trying to find ways to incorporate horses and horse-related things, here’s some inspiration I’ve come across on the internet.

Favors from Ritzy Bee Blog. Our save-the-dates are also on this derby-inspired post, here.

Table Cards from Martha Stewart Weddings

Trash the dress (if only I knew how to ride like that!) from photographer Critsey Rowe

Our florist got married at Devil’s Thumb Ranch last year. During her ceremony, she had the ranch release the horses in the field behind them. This was an awesome addition for their photos and something we might just have to copy.

As of now, I have a bucket of horseshoes for who knows what. Any ideas? I’m collecting vintage horse postcards for people to pen some well wishes to us (in lieu of a guestbook).

The postcards I just won on eBay

And I’m considering using horse breeds instead of table numbers. With ten tables, I’m trying to get Mr. CB to sit down at the drawing board once more and illustrate some different breeds that are recognizable from each other. My mom, who owned five horses growing up, helped me to identify the most known breeds: Appaloosa, Thoroughbred, Mustang, Clydesdale, Shetland Pony, and so on.

Do you have any suggestions for our horse theme? Are you including a theme in your wedding?

Hi Miss CB! We just got married on Kentucky Derby day, I grew up on a horsefarm, my dad is a racehorse trainer, etc.
Though this doesn’t help you, we had our (female) guests bring big hats, served mint juleps and projected the Derby on the wall during the cocktail hour.
But anyway… our ringbearer (since he wasn’t allowed to have the real rings anyway) carried a horseshoe with flowers and ribbon on it down the aisle. It was held “rightside up” so the good luck didn’t fall out! It was kind of like this, but not so ‘frou-frou’: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.seraphineum.co.uk/LinkClick.aspx%3Flink%3Dwedding.jpg%26tabid%3D71%26mid%3D460&imgrefurl=http://www.seraphineum.co.uk/&usg=__4pZat7_cxR9NajZQVIcqhSRsMsg=&h=198&w=154&sz=61&hl=en&start=16&sig2=BwXdnm1Q5iwq5fj4zdaosQ&um=1&tbnid=PzWYmpaHZi9WBM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=81&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgreek%2Bwedding%2Bhorseshoe%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1B5_____enUS327US327%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1&ei=EOEOSqfKJIGElAec4szxAg

Also, my dad, the 2 flowergirls and ringbearer and I came down to the site in a buggy and the horse whinnied during the ceremony. It was perfect (for us!)

Good luck, have fun!

These are beautiful and creative ideas. I love the invitation with the horseshoe. How about a horse wedding cake topper? Something like this maybe?

Another distintive horse is the Tennessee Walker show in a pose picking it’s feet up.

ooh you could also print out a large poster with the horse on it and have all your guests sign that as a guest book and then put it up in your home. I love your horse theme!

I bartend at the rodeo every summer (6 years now), so we’re having our rehearsal dinner at the rodeo. We had our RD invites and inserts designed with a horseshoe a clover image, as well as Goldrush font. They came out really cute. I like the idea of using horseshoes as escort cards.

Google image search “prize ribbons.” I’ve been trying to think of a way to incorporate them into my wedding (dog show theme? ehhh no), but they might be a pretty and whimsical addition, in your colors of course. They’re not overtly horse-y, either.

something you might want to think about for the kiddos that will be coming are those horse-shoe puzzle things at Crackerbarrel? They are basically two horseshoes chain-linked together with a ring in the middle, and it’s supposed to be a brain-teaser. The object is to get the ring off some how. Just a thought!

Adorable! You could incorporate the horseshoes into the table centerpieces somehow. And, I love your idea of using horses as the table names, very unique!

I love the idea of using different breeds as the table number. You could also use Paint, Palomino, Arabian, Friesian, Buckskin, and Quarterhorses.

You should PM me. I am having a horseshoe themed wedding in two weeks (my husband is a cowboy) and I could give you lots and lots of ideas. We are also having our reception in a barn and I am wearing cowboy boots under my dress! I’ll let you know what I’m doing with the 200 horseshoes I have!

When I was a kid I wanted to have a horseback wedding like one I saw in a magazine. Too bad (1) it’s horribly impractical and (2) my fiance is afraid of horses

Hopefully you can find something to do with the horseshoes because that would look really neat!
