Where Would I Find This?

May 16th, 2009 @ 4:10 pm by Mrs. Swan

I love this:

Where Would I Find This? : wedding cake Wa1015901

This lovely cupcake tower. Did the couple in Martha Stewart Weddings make this? It’s so modern, simple, streamlined and perfectly un-cutesy. The thought of a DIY project makes me cry after another long day of work, but perhaps I should get over myself and do it anyway? Sigh… props and kudos to anyone who can: 1) tell me how to make this, or 2) tell me where I can buy something just like it. I will be forever grateful.

cupcaketree.com has something similar (a little more temporary-looking, though. You could always dress it up.

It looks like something that can be made in very different ways; If you want to keep supply costs down you can make it hollow - but that would take time and skill. It looks to me like you can buy flat square material for the plates and attach molding to it before painting. Then you can use cube-like spacers between each of those flat squares, the base cube would have to be made of a heavier material… like wood (?) Just throwing out ideas ;)

Make it!!
I would probably use styrofoam since the shapes are already perfectly precut and the correct thickness. Rubber cement works the best to hold styrofoam together -

Check out local bakeries. In Northern NJ, I know Pink Cake Box specializes in cup cake towers, and they have a cup cake base that they rent and sell.

Styrofoam might be okay for the blocks that make of the center of the structure, but you might want the shelves a little more finished looking. I would use plywood sheets, drill holes in the center of each platform, use a dowel rod to go through the platforms and whatever material you use for the center, add some decorative trim to the edges, and paint the whole thing with a good coat of white paint. Actually, I kind of want to make it now, but I already had a cupcake tower at my wedding. I used WIlton caker tiers that I borrowed from a friend. Was is amazing? Not really, but the cupcakes were still delish!

You could try doing an alchemy post on etsy for it, they can use the picture as inspiration. Or try these they are not exactly the same but their close.

I agree with above about if you are going to make it using something styrofoam. I just got done making a cake stand and I used cake “dummies” and they worked great! It’s so sturdy and you could use a tiered one for the stand part and plywood for the shelves.

i think a full-styrofoam set would be too light for this purpose. how about using wood boxes (painted white) for the centers, and square wood / melamine pieces for the ‘tray’ portion?

perhaps you could rent one too :)

My dad built me one for my June 20th wedding. I’ll sell it to you after the wedding if you’re interested.

I am having cupcakes at me wedding and my stepdad is very handy. He is making our boxes. It wont look like this, but we are using 3 boxes, tiered to mimic a cake. He made out of mdf and is painting it white. It barely took him a day! Also, the place I am getting the cupcakes from offered a tree, again not quite like the picture. I had also found one online I wanted and just gave dad the picture. It’s not complete yet or Id send you the picture. If you want more details how to make let me know!
