Point and Shoot

May 18th, 2009 @ 2:49 pm by Mrs. Mascara

I finally gave in and bought a new “point and shoot” camera recently. We had purchased a new SLR as a Christmas gift to ourselves, but I needed something that could fit in my purse, which our wonderful Nikon D60 would not. I also wanted something at a lower price point so when I brought it out for events such as my bridal showers (one of which is next weekend!) and my bachelorette party (which I cannot wait for, by the way) I wouldn’t have to wear it around my neck due to the fear of dropping it after one too many glasses of wine. My fiance insists on doing extensive research before buying any type of electronic device, so naturally I gave him the task of finding me a digital camera that was not too expensive (less than $300), very compact, took pictures quickly (I hate waiting for 5 different flashes to go off and by the time it’s finished everyone is blinking), and took good pictures in the dark. After a bit of surfing the web, he came up with this one:Point and Shoot : wedding photography 8800577

A Canon PowerShot SD790 IS, which was cheapest at Best Buy. The next night we went to the store to check it out in person. The floor model wouldn’t turn on, which was slightly disappointing, and was a little bigger than I would have liked. There was another Canon model that had similar features, but was much more compact. We played with that model and decided we’d do a bit more research and come back the next day. After discovering that the more compact model also had good reviews, and that Best Buy’s prices were comparable to other stores, we went back and bought it! It’s a Canon PowerShot SD780 IS.

I got to test it out last week while I was in Denver for work, and I am really happy with it! If anyone is looking for a great compact camera, I recommend this one. Here are a couple pictures I took from my hotel room; sadly this was as close to the mountains as I could get with my hectic schedule while I was there!

Point and Shoot : wedding photography Picture08 Oh, and please don’t judge the camera by these pictures; they were taken through the glass window in my room.

What type of point and shoot camera do you have? Do you love it or hate it?

We have a DSLR that we love, but - I find I don’t take as many photos as I used to because getting the SLR out is just a pain. But, since we’re about to embark on a tight budget and we do have the DSLR, a new point and shoot is not in our budget. So I just end up using my camera cell phone.. sad, right?

I have a Sony DSCW90 http://cdn.overstock.com/images/products/etilize/images/250/1010566105.jpg

I like it, not sure if I love it like I used to. For some reason it’s been weird lately and has been taking a lot of blurry pictures.

I’m definitely looking for a new one, and hope to have that wrapped up by mid-June at the latest, so I can get all comfy with it — and its functions — before the wedding and honeymoon!

Miss Mascara we just bought the same camera as you! We wanted something easy to manage on our honeymoon and this one fit the bill. So far we love it!

I originally wanted a DSLR as my graduation gift, but realized I wouldn’t take it everywhere (those things are biggies!)

So instead I got a Leica D-lux and I have to say, I love it. It has just enough manual settings to take nice pictures but not enough to overwhelm people like me with only one intro to photography class from journalism school. They have an even smaller one (and in my opinion, cuter one) called the C-lux, too.

I have an older Sony T7, it’s sooo small, loads quickly, and it takes fantastic outdoor pics. The indoor pics aren’t great though. I got my fiance the Canon 1100 for xmas and it’s great. The indoor pics are decent, the macro setting is incredible and it’s fairly easy to use. Unfortunately the lens is stuck out and open (after only 4 months) so the camera is awaiting a trip back to Canon. I suspect a spec of sand got in the thing.

I just bought the same camera you did this past Friday! I got the Canon SD780 IS in black. I picked this one after our first elph finally wore itself out (it was 7 years old, lol). Granted, I love our slr Nikon D70 but this one is the perfect size to take out for girls night, etc. I have been really happy with it so far.

We bought the Canon on our honeymoon because SOMEONE forgot to pack the battery charger for the Sony, and no stores in Maui carried a replacement charger. So now we have two. The Canon is WAY better.

I love my Canon Digital SLR, so I can only imagine the point and shoot is just as great!

I have an Olympus FE-170. I loved it at first, but I hate it now. It’s so bulky compared to other cameras, and the pictures aren’t nearly as clear as I’d like. I’m definitely in the market for a new one before the honeymoon!

I have the first Canon one. I really like it! I went from 4 to 8 megapixels so it’s blissful!

I also own a Nikon DLSR and a Canon point and shoot! I have the SD800IS. I love it. My very first digital camera was a 4 megapixel digital elph, and I put that little sucker through so much. I took it rock climbing, on road trips, and even once dropped it off a 20 foot cliff - it survived. Unfortunately, it did not survive it’s next big fall, which was off a 30 foot cliff… I’ve since learned to invest in a VERY sturdy camera strap!

I will probably always buy canon for my point and shoots. I need to upgrade my DSLR and am currently trying to decide between Nikon or Canon however… and I’m finding the decision very difficult!

Just like your fiance, I like to do a ton of research on my electronics. However, my past DSLR was a bit of a dud (Nikon D70 with back-focus problems… ) despite very very good reviews, and I’m terrified of making the same mistake twice. I have been eying the Nikon D90 though….

I love my Canon Powershot and they have awesome customer service. I’ve had my camera for 3+ years and it gets A LOT of wear and tear. When the sensor crapped out, Canon fixed it for free (including all shipping!) and had it back to me in 4 working days! I would never hesitate to buy a Canon (and it takes fab pics to boot!).
