Flip FLOP

May 19th, 2009 @ 3:04 pm by Mrs. Mascara

For a long time now (as in several months… that’s a long time in the wedding planning world) I’ve wanted to have a basket of flip flops at our wedding for all the ladies (and men, I suppose) with tired toes. I am not one that is known to dance all night, but I know that when I do get on the dance floor at weddings in my taller-than-necessary heels, my feet usually hurt, and I want nothing more than to take off my shoes and dance around barefoot. I try to refrain from removing them though, for fear of dirt, and men with shoes on, waiting to step on my toes. I’m sure plenty of other ladies have been in this same boat. Enter the very thoughtful and strategically placed basket of flip flops near the dance floor, there to come to every girl’s rescue.

The basket o’ flip flops is one of those things that I really want at our wedding, but do not want to spend a lot of money on.

I’ve been telling myself from the beginning that I will not spend more than $1 per pair. I’ve seen them at this price at Michaels, but the quality is lacking a little, even if they do only cost a dollar. After doing a little investigating on the subject, I learned that one day each summer, Old Navy has a sale where all of their solid color flip flops are $1! I did some internet searching to find that last summer, the sale was in June, so I signed up for Old Navy spam and waited for the ad to arrive in my inbox.

Yesterday, it arrived.

For a minute I was excited, and then I realized that it’s my bridal shower this weekend (yay!) and I will be in the Upper Peninsula… aka, the land of no Old Navy stores. Or any stores, for that matter. The closest Old Navy is an hour and a half from where I’ll be… so I won’t be driving to pick up my $1 flip flops. Hopefully some of you who’ve been looking for some cheap flip flops will be within a reasonable distance of an Old Navy this Saturday, so you can capitalize on this great sale! Good luck, and happy shopping!

Oooo, I might have to look into this…or at least let my gals know about it in case they want cheap and comfy back-up shoes.

I found out about the sale last week and was so excited! But I think they have a limit of 5 pairs per person too. Bummer.

This is where we bought our bucket of flip flops from! I would check the ad this year, though, because it is usually a limit of 2 for the $1 price. Last summer I had to find a manager to convince him to sell me 40 pairs for $1 each…it took some persuasion, but he gave in. Just tell them its for a wedding!

Crap! I second those who say… get someone to do it for you! Groom? Bridesmaid? Friend? Someone ought to be up for the task!

Oooo… I love this sale!
But be advised if you don’t get there quick enough, you will be left with overly huge/overly small sizes to choose from. I made a plan to get some last summer, but I went to the store a day after the sale, and it was petty picked over.
But I love the idea of a flip flop basket!!!

We did this for our wedding! The ladies snatched up their flops as soon as they walked in the door! I got them at Old Navy for $2 each. I would have LOVED to have had loads of size options, but I opted for only 25 pairs…and it looked super cute and was well received!

how did everyone determine how many pairs to buy?

why don’t you go to target and buy some from the dollar section there? they always have tons of them. Sometimes they go on clearance for less than $1.

I like the old navy flip flops but they sell out so fast on that day and the limit sucks. It definitely wouldn’t be worth it for you to go. The Michael’s flip flops will be welcomed just the same by people with strappy sandals and sore feet.

I had to laugh at you saying how the UP doesn’t have any stores. My nieces and nephew live up there (near Houghton) and it is, unfortunately, very true. When the Walmart came in to their town, they were all excited because they didn’t have to drive all the way to Marquette and go to the Kmart. When they come down here to PA, they are mesmerized by even our dinkiest malls.

I second Heathaah’s question

What sizes did you pick? I makes sense to me to buy large ones becuase they will fit more people.

Aw, man! I’d so get them for you… there’s an Old Navy less than a mile from home. :o(

Last year I did the bridesmaid run for my best friend. 10 of us showed up when the store opened, so we bought 50 pairs.. It was a little daunting though, everyone wanted their $1 flip flops!!

For those of you interested…I simply went to Old Navy with my mom and sister with the instructions to grab as many navy and white flops as possible. We ended up with around 50 flops, and most were in the women’s 7, 8, ansd 9 range. We only grabbed a couple of men’s sizes and a handful of smaller women’s sizes. At the end of the day, we only had 2 mens 12’s and 2 women’s 5’s left. I had 180 guests, and as this was not my main favor, I wasn’t so concerned with the sizes and number I had. It was just a nice gesture for those who wanted them .

Oh, and most men and older guests did not take them.

Surely there’s someone — or a few people, depending on the limits the stores put on the deal — who can grab some for you! I might have to go grab some myself. My wedding/reception is outside and I’m afraid no one will heed my warnings to wear comfortable shoes!
