About Mrs. Swan

Stag(ette) or Forget About It!

May 19th, 2009 @ 3:32 pm by Mrs. Swan

In the U.K., they call them stag (mens’) and hen (ladies’) parties. I think it’s similar in Canada, eh? What I am referring to is the bachelor/bachelorette party. The ever-on-the-ball Mr. Swan already has his planned… sigh. I, on the other hand, am struggling with whether or not to even have one.

I am not sure if I’d like to have the traditional wild night on the town. I’m in my early 30s and now start to get crabby at around 1AM (yes, I know…boo!). Also, being me, I just have to have some standards:

  1. No stripper - I did it once, and it was fun. I’m not sure if I’m ready for repeat performances.
  2. I do want to be able to remember the evening the next day.
  3. Since I love food, I’d love to have a meal thrown in there somewhere.
  4. I do struggle with how relaxing I want the outing to be, because I want to chill out a bit with my homegirls.

One day while reading Daily Candy, which I hardly read enough, I came across what I would love for my bachelorette party:

Soho House NY’s Pretty Party. The evening is for up to ten people and includes cocktails, dinner (with wine), two half-hour spa treatments for each person and our own exclusive space from 6PM-12AM. Sounds like a plan to me! The only problem is, well… this is Soho House, which is a very exclusive place in NYC’s Meatpacking District (it’s actually a members only club, except for certain opportunities to rent out its space, such as this one), and it will not come for cheap. I just can’t ask my friends to drop a couple benjamins on a night out, even though this sounds absolutely fabulous.

I’m still thinking about trying to find a way to incorporate food, maybe a spa thing, maybe some dancing, and maybe something else (like a mechanical bull!!) into a nice evening with my friends. I’m also open to the idea of not having a bachelorette party at all. I’ll live. I know I’m being a bad bride again, but sue me.

Any suggestions out there? What was the most fun bachelor(ette) party you’ve ever been to?

One of my good friends had her bachelorette party in her finished basement. We all brought an appetizer and a bottle of something to drink, and we pitched in to have a massuse come in and do half hour massages for everyone. Drinks, food, massages, and Wii made for a fun night, and it wasn’t too expensive.

That seems like my kind of party!! But I would never ask my friends to drop that kind of cash either :)
Um, I’m *almost* 25 and like to go to bed before 12 most of the time (yes, even on weekends!)

Where I’m from in Canada we call them Stag(Men) and Doe’s(Women) due to our general love of wildlife hehe… or if they are combined, it could be a stag and doe, or a “Shag”… just to clarify!

Oh wow, that spa idea sounds amazing. Though, I have to echo a few of the previous comments and add that if I were to have a spa treatment close to midnight, I might fall asleep in the middle of it!

Soho house is cool and all, but definitely not worth the money you’d have to spend to get in there as a non-member. Anyway, I’m with you on the tone of my bachelorette party - no strippers or cheesy restaurants where drag queens serve you dinner! My friends and I are planning to go to the Boat Basin for the day. I am a big fan of day drinking and it’s such a pretty location. We’ll probably do dinner and drinks somewhere else in the city, just not sure where yet…

I’m with Ms. Gloss, I’m only 25 and usually asleep by the time midnight rolls around. I went to an all male review at 18 and that was enough male strippers for me in my lifetime.

I’m more stoked on the idea of a performance of some sort (concert, comedy show, play, etc.) and dinner & drinks in the city. Hopefully my girls got the hint. lol.

That sounds like an awesome idea. I’m sure no matter what you do you could incorporate a nice meal.

my friends are insisting on surprising me with the whole night. I did also for no strippers or male genitalia! (boring, I know)

Where I am from in Canada often couples have a Stag and Doe (usually planned by the Best Man), Bachelor party and Bachelorette party. The Stag and Doe is usually a big party that anyone can by tickets to, often held at a bar/restaurant/hall. The ticket sales go to buying door prizes and covering the sot of the event and to leftover money raised goes to the wedding couple.

That sounds like fun, but it also sounds expensive. If you want to stay downtown you can always swing into Rescue Beauty Lounge they have sweet mani/pedis and are really accomodating. Best of all they have a location on Gansevoort so you guys can hop over to a bar. Maybe the roof bar at the hotel gansevoort? I know, I know, it can be a bit scene-y but if you go at a decent hour it can be fun and not too packed.

I’m not having a bachelorette party, but that was because I wasn’t really feelin’ the whole party with penis necklaces, either. (Also because my friends are now scattered all over the country, so it’s hard for us all to get together). However, IF I did have one, I’d want to spend the day getting manis/pedis and then a nice dinner out somewhere. Nothing fancy. What’s important is that you spend a nice evening with friends. Do what you feel comfortable with :) I’ve heard of girls just doing slumber parties, which sounds like fun, too!

Eee! Love SoHo House :) But yeah, VERY pricey…yikes!!

I think a low-key night with dinner and dancing at a random bar afterwards is perfect (it’s what we did!) & we were home early, full, & happy :)

i didn’t intend to have one, but now, because of my very lovely friends, will be having a girly sleepover (complete with DIY “spa” - bring yr own facial masks, exfoliators etc) and then a dinner+drinks bachelorette party.

yes, i feel the need to eat too! :P

Spa’ days are very popular over here as well, can usually book something at any local hotel that has an on site spa. Could you look into that option at all?
As I’m now stressing as the day approaches I’m starting to wish I’d gone that route.
Instead we’re having a day out at a local 3 Day event (horses jumping big timber) and a meal at a gastropub in the evening.
No strippers in sight thankfully, although pub owner is apparently a fireman to.

@jenny - great tip. Plus I can walk there since it’s in Brooklyn!!

@Lovesthe Bear - thanks for the tip as well. I’ll look into it.

@bebot - Thanks for the explanation there. It sounds like an efficient system.

@Kirst - I knew I was getting something wrong. Thank you

I’ll let you all know what happens on the bachelorette front, ladies.
