I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!
About Mrs. D'orsay

Then… It Bordered on Farcical

May 20th, 2009 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

Hello Hive… Mr. D and I spent two-and-a-half hours attempting to print out addresses for 16 envelopes. TWO AND A HALF HOURS.

It was absurd. We played with page sizes, line spacing, font size, number size, alignment - the whole shebang. We also learned that Mr. D’s computer and printer prefers the metric system, while mine is all about the inches. Which really meanr that to get the page size correct, we sent several documents back and forth before finally figuring out the problem. Also, my American envelopes are just too wide for Mr. D’s printer, so we had to orient all the addresses to landscape and re-mess around with the addresses. It was pure bliss, I tell you.

Okay, maybe not after Mr. D printed not one, but two addresses upside-down. Did I mention we don’t have any extra envelopes? Because we don’t. They came in a pack of 50, and I just couldn’t justify spending the same amount of money to get “extra” envelopes. Though, I’m sure if I had justified it, we would have an entire extra pack of 50 laying around and we’d have had all the envelopes correct on the first try. Such is life.

The addresses aren’t 100% centered and then slightly lowered like I’d prefer - but after the second upside-down envelope, I just started caring that they were on the right side, and right side up. In fact, I think I’m 98% to the point where I’ve stopped caring about our invitations.

They don’t match our color scheme anymore? Don’t care. We’re giving two (thankfully, easy going friends who won’t care) upside down addressed envelopes. Don’t care. We overspent on them? I don’t even care about that anymore.

BAHAH! But you know what?! They’re nearly done, and I’m so happy to get them out. Here is an envelope so you can see how they turned out in the Savoye font.

The only sad thing? I have 45 more of these waiting for me in two weeks… I’ll consider this a trial run. BUT, a trial run that is almost done!

The invites have easily been my least favorite DIY project. Bring on the fire or power tools any day!

What has been your least favorite DIY project?

After an unfortunate similar experience with my friends’ wedding, I purchased a calligraphy pen today. I figure learning calligraphy will be easier than printing those things!

So sorry to hear that! I ordered extra envelopes and now have lots of extra envelopes….I don’t think I ‘messed’ up one enough to want to do it again (they are NOT perfect by any means, I just didn’t want to fix any of my mistakes). Also, I self-mailed one to see if it made it through unharmed and it basically looks like it was driven over about 100 times…..so I’m not really concerned about the address anymore :)

@miss gloss — i laughed out loud when I read the bit about them looking run over — how funny is that?

Miss D they look great! And everyone will be so excited with the contents, they won’t mind — I promise :)

Congrats on getting the trial run done! DIY projects are painful. Just painful–what should be easy, like printing, becomes an ordeal! I feel your pain. I had the same issue with scaling, formatting, printing, and taking 2 hours to print the welcome bag inserts!!!!

And the “I don’t care” attitude–I know it well. It keeps you sane. Go with it.

@Miss Gloss: Yes, envelopes get destroyed in the mail!

So don’t sweat it, Miss D (not that you are anymore!).

addressing invites was rough! I think I lost 20 envelopes from printer mess ups!

I think figuring out reception seating will be the worst, though!

Sorry they took so long! I agree with you, the paper DIY projects are the most daunting. They look fab though!

They came out great!!!

I feel your pain, Miss D! Today, I finally dropped off our invites for printing. I wasn’t 100% in love with the design we created (i think it has more to do with the card stock), but I was ready to move on.

I ran into printer problems as well trying to print my program inserts on long paper (to make a 10.5-inch landscape). Luckily I got past it and they look great, but what a hassle!

@jess: I used gold calligraphy ink and a calligraphy pen to trace over the printed addresses. Here are a few reference posts:

The inspiration: http://withthisringwedding.blogspot.com/2008/11/calligraphy-101.html

My attempts: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/05/12/fontalicious/ http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/05/15/fontalicious-part-2-practice-vs-theory/

@everyone I’m glad to know I’m not alone!

Sounds like a bad 2.5 hours. I’m so sorry to hear that! I haven’t done my invitations yet, but I did just mail out our Save the Dates (which I made myself out a linoleum cut). Addressing envelopes wasn’t as bad. I decided that I didn’t care too much about the handwriting. My own hanwriting is decent, so I just used a thick point sanguine ink Pitt pen.

Anyone used Action Envelope before? I recommend them, Good prices and tons of styles and colors, and they offer 100% post consumer recycled material as well.
