This is Really It

May 20th, 2009 @ 11:01 am by Mrs. Joey

I know over the next 6 months we’re going to have a few “This is really it - we’re adults, and in it together” moments. I’m not sure how to explain the feeling that we’re REALLY getting married.

Our first “this is really it” moment came a few weeks ago at an unlikely place: our financial planner’s office. We were there filling out the forms to buy life insurance, and it hit me. I’m actually worried how Mr. Joey will continue financially if should pass away early. It’s totally morbid (as is life insurance) but it was an important thought. We are really in this together for life. I want to make sure he can still pay our mortgage and live in our house without me, and he feels the same way. Pretty soon we’ll be putting together wills and changing beneficiary information on all our employer benefit forms. This is adult stuff! :)

Have you made any “benefit” or insurance steps together? Did it make you feel like you were making big steps toward a future together?

yeah, it’s scary to think that if something happens to one of us, there will be a severe financial impact on the other….

good to discuss this all before marriage though–however morbid it seems!

Although we haven’t taken many steps together, I’ve already invested in a significant amount of life insurance. My mother will be the beneficiary until we tie the knot, but it is understood (in writing), that should something happen to me beforehand, he will be taken care of as well.
We will be writing wills soon, and it’s scary, but necessary.

We have and are still going through the process of changing all our benificiary information. It makes things all that more “real”!

When they were explaining our closing documents to us for our house, one of them was “if one of you should pass on the other will receive the house…” And I didn’t hear the rest. I was sitting there going “uhhhhh what? crap.”

We’ve updated all our beneficiary forms too! It makes everything seem a little more real!

Yes, we have gone over this. I cried for about three hours over the thought of something happening to Mr. Taffy, and had such a bad reaction that I have asked for our vows to not say anything about “death till us part”. I will start sobbing right there, at the ceremony! I don’t think I would have had this severe of a reaction had I not lost my father suddenly. :(

I bought a life insurance policy with him as my beneficiary about a month after we got engaged. We just wanted to get it out of the way. Sitting down with the insurance agent definitely brought on a feeling of “Woah - we’re really doing this…”

awww, those moments are the bestest! Congrats on your first! :)
I had one awhile ago but it was the whole - GASP I’m engaged, OMG OMG OMG BREATHE!-type moments which are almost like panic attacks and okay… now I see that it doesnt apply, hehe.
My FI and I haven’t gotten insured but we’ve added eachother as beneficiaries at work for 401Ks etc. It’s definately a “moment”.

Good for you! My fiance and I both work in financial services, in insurance and investments. Kudos to you, and all future brides, and everyone out there, for taking the initiative and responsibility for each other. It’s such an important step, something some never get around to. I’m always so happy to hear of young people being courageous and making that move!
