Time to Wrap It Up!

May 20th, 2009 @ 6:36 pm by Mrs. Taffy

Things are getting crazy in the Taffy household. I have been hosting one Craft-O-Rama after another, and will try to bust out as many posts as I can these last few, um… days. Eek!

A while back, I posted about my flower indecision. I am happy to report that I have chosen white tulips for our centerpieces, Today’s tutorial is regarding the vases, which are wrapped in black ribbon.

My centerpiece mock up from March.

For this tutorial, you will need:

  • Ribbon. I used 5/8″ black single face satin ribbon–two spools for 20 vases
  • Xyron machine. I used the 1.5″ one, which can take two ribbons at once and is the least expensive Xyron model
  • Scissors
  • Paper, pencil, tape & ruler
  • Adhesive photo squares
  • Craft glue
  • Plastic wrap

I found my vases for a great price at a store called Garden Ridge. Here they are in all their pre-wrapped glory:

The first thing we did was measure the top of a vase. Then we cut 20 strips of ribbon, a little longer than the measurement, so they would overlap. Then I made a 1″ long paper strip the same size, and wrapped it around the top of the vase, keeping it level. This will serve as a guide for the ribbon.

We fed the ribbon through the Xyron machine, then wrapped it around the bottom edge of the paper.

This is seriously easy, and with the paper guide, they look perfect!!!

Next, I mocked up a flat bow similar to the ones I used for our invitations, using adhesive photo squares to hold it into place. Then I glued the bow on to the vase, right over where the ribbon overlaps. Don’t mind the crazy wrinkled tablecloth!!! Here is Mrs. Emerald’s bow tutorial.

I then dissected the bow for measurements and cut all of the pieces of ribbon. Miss K and my Taffette of honor made the bows while I worked on another project. Thanks, ladies!!!

After they had glued all the bows on, we let them dry for a day. Later, I wrapped each vase in plastic wrap to protect the ribbon and bow while the florist works on them. Since the bow is flat, it was easy to wrap.

They all fit into one box!

I dropped these off at the florist today, and won’t see them until the wedding! I am so excited to see it all come together!!! And to have more floor space for crafting. ;)

More crafty goodness is on its way!

White tulips are beautiful, and the black bow is a wonderful way to “tie” it all together, hehe. I think you’re super clever to create a guide for the bows, my goodness, I NEVER would have thought of that… I always pick up so many interesting tips like that from Weddingbee! :) Love this place!

I love the simple elegance of it. Not too complicated (at least based on your tutorial) and the white tulips look great in your mock up.

these are great- and i am totally inspired by the DIY centerpiece- simple and classic.
i am seriously thinking about DIY centerpieces- what is your cost per centerpiece coming out to?
are you supplying your own flowers? or is the florist?

thanks so much and congrats! they are stunning.

I really
like the use of
satin ribbon

a touch of elegants to my crafts. I will visit your blog often.

@maura: Thanks! The florist is supplying the flowers. Supplying my own vases was a really great cost savings though! I am not ready to share the costs here yet, but you can private message me if you like. :)

I just purchased the Xyron 510 machine and I think I’m going to really love it!! Did the plastic wrap come over the top or just to the top? Does anyone have any suggestions on finishing the ribbon, if a bow isn’t used?

@exghawaii: You are going to love the xyron!
By plastic wrap, do you mean the xyron adhesive or the plastic wrap that I put on later to protect the ribbons while the florist used them?
I used the 1.5″ machine, which was perfect for small ribbon. once you feed the ribbon through the machine, you rub the adhesive on and then pull the clear backing off. The adhesive should only stick to the ribbon, which is awesome!

Oh, and to finish the ribbon, you could fold one end of the ribbon over to create a finished edge (securing it with a double stick photo square or tape), then feed it through with the finished edge right side up. put the unfinished end of the ribbon on the vase first, then overlap the finished edge. This will create a small seam, but will be very subtle. :)

Mrs. Taffy….thank you!
The plastic wrap I’m refering to is the one you put on later to protect the ribbons while at the florist.
Great suggestion on the finished edge of the ribbon.
