La France Sait Tout!

May 21st, 2009 @ 12:27 pm by Mrs. Bear Cub

I’ve been a little (very) hesitant to include actual red poppies in my bouquet, on the tables, etc. Why? Poppies are so fragile! I’ve been worrying they’ll fall apart. But just look at how adorable this french bride is with her red poppies!

La France Sait Tout! : wedding flowers Frenchw

C’est si français!!

It’s perfect French countryside! What a wonderful way to start your wedding day - picking wildflowers. :)

La France Sait Tout! : wedding flowers Frenchw01 So beautiful! So genuine!

The bride and groom really look so blissful! And why not? They’re French! :) Don’t you think she has an air of Juliette Binoche in this picture?

The one thing I can’t tell is how well her flowers held up over the day. Don’t get me wrong - I don’t expect my bouquet to be pristine by the end of the night - I’d just prefer for it to hold some of its shape, you know? Not too much to ask for?

So what do you think? Should I go for my inspiration? Should I include real poppies in my bouquet? What’s your experience with using wildflowers as wedding flowers?

Can you just add a few so the rest of the flowers will give it some shape and it will be less noticable if they’re not holding up well?

Have you looked into including some fake flowers in with the rest of your wedding bouquet? When my best friend got married last year, her florist slipped some artificial lily of the valley into her bouquet, as the delicate flower may not have held up as well as the other flowers (plus, I think her florist said they were quite expensive). Either that, or, as Miss Mascara suggested, maybe slip a few in, but have other flowers their for structure and support?

How hard would it be for you to make a bouquet and just let it sit, not in water for 2 - 3 hours and see how they hold up? If they’re toast in that time period, then they probably won’t last on your wedding day either. If they’re still going strong, then maybe they’re more hearty than you realized?

How about using anemones? They look like poppies and hold up much better.

Would a red anemone bouquet work out, or are they too delicate, too? http://www.sarahpepper.co.uk/gallery/images/bouquets/FullSize/Red-Anemone-Handtied.jpg

@Lillindy: I’m crushing pretty hard on red anemonies right now, too! Does anyone know if they’re in season in september? I can’t find that information anywhere.

I’m having doubts about my bouquet… not what flowers, but to have one at all. Besides pictures I’m not sure what good it will do me. I’ll have to carry it around all day. So I may go casual like that cute french bride and just pick some wildflowers. Now if only poppies were wildflowers in MA…..

@Lillindy: Wow that red anemone bouquet it stellar!!!
Do you know if they come in any other color?

What about including paper poppies from veterans’ organizations in your bouquet? Too depressing?

Of course a fabulous French bride would do something all wonderful like that.

I would really look into going the fake/silk route. Poppies are really easy ti replicate and no one would know that they arent really and that way you can always keep them and put them in a shadow box

I can’t remember if you’re DIYing your flowers, but if you are and want to use poppies you need to know something crazy about them.

To make them last as a cut flower you actually have to seal the cut stem with a flame! I’m not sure how well they’d hold up in a bouquet but I think you could safely incorporate a few of them. If they don’t survive, c’est la vie, the other blooms will cover for them.
Personally? I think you should risk it!

I love red poppies but I thought the same thing, I used to pick them by the bunch as a kid and I remember they would start fading pretty soon. Red Anemones have the same sort of look but they are heartier, I think.

I say go for it! As long as you have a few other “sturdier” flowers with them, they should be able to withstand the day, but only if you’re not expecting perfection. For my wedding, I assumed that nothing would go perfectly and I just let the small things go (like if the bouquet flowers droop a little). I highly reccommend this approach, I loved everything about my wedding!

Heya,
About.com has the anemone season listed as Jan-May and Aug-Dec, so you go that route if you want to.

I wanted to do pink poppies in my bouquet, but they were too hard (read “too expensive”) to find in my area. We are on a tight budget, so we’re buying bulk flowers from Sam’s Club and making our own arrangements. Am I crazy or am I crazy? : )

@giselle: That’s some great advice! I really should just trust things are going to come together nicely :)
@oh710oh9bride: Thanks for finding that info for me! :) BTW you’re not crazy for doing your own arrangements - I’m going that route too. I’ll post more on that later. This table arrangement uses farmers market produce, and it turns out looking beautiful!
