Madison or Anna II?

May 21st, 2009 @ 12:01 pm by Mrs. French Bulldog

On our first trip to Macy’s to register, Mr Frenchie and I decided not to register for China, but to get a nice set of everyday plates. We didn’t want to not get things we really needed, like everyday plates and a vacuum, because our guests decided to get us china instead. We decided on a casual china line by Wedgwood called “Eternity”.

From the start we’ve known we wanted plain white plates. You know, something that will go with anything, no matter what the theme… because we’re always thinking, ‘would this work for entertaining?’

After talking to Mama Frenchie, she convinced us (and I’m glad she did) that we needed fancy china. Yes, we probably wont get the whole she-bang for our wedding, but this is something we can add on to over the years. So, back to Macy’s we went one afternoon, just to find a china pattern.

FH liked the more elaborate patterns, and I liked the simpler patterns, and somehow we ended up with a great compromise (at a reasonable price), with the Federal Platinum pattern by Lenox.

The very helpful, Bonnie, in the Bridal Department at the Macy’s Home store at South Coast Plaza also pointed out to us that this pattern lent itself nicely to incorporating accent plates from other patterns. Such as these two from Kate Spade:

1 - Larabee Road

2 - June Lane

I’m leaning towards Larabee Road.

Now that we had “fancy china”, we didn’t need to spend (or ask our guest to spend) that much on everyday china, now did we?

Luckily we’ll find any excuse we can to walk around Crate & Barrel with “the gun”, and found ourselves there the following weekend. On this trip we decided on the Madison dinnerware line. We liked Madison for a couple reasons: 1) it’s white, 2) it is cheaper than the Wedgwood, 3) it’s not made in China (Mr Frenchie has been making an effort not to register for too many items made outside the US, especially in China), and 4) we liked it.

(Pssst… over here! This actually made me happier because, and this is between you and me, I never really liked the Wedgwood. What? It had weird Ws on it.)

So, done right? Wrong. This past weekend Mr Frenchie and I found ourselves at our favorite store, Crate & Barrel, once again. We walked past the dinnerware, and Mr Frenchie said he wanted to switch to these plates called Anna II.

The Mr scanned one of the plates and I went online this morning and switched everything from Madison over to Anna II. Of course after I switched them all over I noticed that these plates are pricey! Not super pricey, but pricier than the Madison plates. So, if we don’t have a strong feeling one way or the other, shouldn’t we go with the least expensive plates? I’ve left the decision up to Mr Frenchie.

Have you changed an item on your registry more than once? Are you scanner happy like we are?

Yes! We changed our everyday china a few times. I think we originally went with Anna but then changed to the Iron Chef line because it was more flexible and a little cheaper. :)

Wow, the Larabee Road are so pretty without being too fancy nor casual!

Personally, I’m not into fancy china. My idea of fancy china is uber chic modern design (like the Lamina line from CB2). So, I registered for those, since we already have most of our dishes.

I don’t know that we’ll ever have an excuse for real fancy china.

Hmmm…now you have me thinking about clean, white china for regular use (we had registered for some really pretty, sunny yellow plates et al).

We liked the madison too, but ended up with the Pure line. I love all of your choices! :)

I love the idea of registering for functional everyday plates. And the Kate Spade accents are a brilliant idea! Both sets are lovely, but I think that the slight lip on the Madison set puts it a bit ahead of the other. But if you (or Mr. Frenchie) prefer the Anna’s, remember that these are a gift afterall, so you shouldn’t let the price stop you. :-)

We have the same china! And I have obsessively changed things on our registry. It’s a very bad habit of mine…

The first plates we registered for were being discontinued, so we had to pick new ones. Then after we picked the new ones, we decided they were much to fancy for our overall lifestyle, so we’re on set #3. I think plates are hard! You have to pick something you’re going to keep for a very long time. And there’s always new pretty things coming out! ahhh… choices choices

i have to say my fiance was on the china kick…so we registered.

Now we have fancy serving plates and no sheets, pots and pans, or silverware!

I love the Madison plates from Crate and Barrel. I discovered them over the weekend, via the internet, and I love them! I love the white look. I can’t decide if we really need formal china…

The one thing I expected my finace to be completely hands off with was the china patterns. We actually had a fight in the middle of Macy’s because he and I disagreed on which pattern to pick out. I was flabbergasted! p.s. South Coast Plaza is amazing!

We were actually torn between the Camille and Roulette and decided on the Camille because they are casual enough for everyday china, but the pattern makes them fancy and easy to dress up for special occasions (I might buy some gold chargers to go with them). It was easy decision on our part b/c we have NO space for two sets of dishes :)

This is so funny because we registered for a Kate Space china pattern (Corona Grove) and then the Madison place settings for our everyday stuff. We have been using some of the Madison place settings that we got at our shower and LOVE them. They’re the perfect combination of traditional and modern.

I also have the Federal Platinum set. It was actually an impulse buy with my fiance when there was a Lenox outlet going out of business. We got $3000 worth of china for $500!

I really love how you went for a very spare, simple china decision! I just posted about another simple choice, CB2’s Bauhaus collection (which is almost ridiculously inexpensive!) at http://www.kireinest.com.

If you think Mr. Frenchie really has an allegiance to the Anna IIs, I would go with them (it’s always nice to let the guy feel as though he has some say!) Although I will say that my husband would occasionally express an opinion slightly stronger than what he actually felt during the planning/registering process just to help me feel as though he was more involved… ;)
