The Yorkies Learn a New Trick!

May 21st, 2009 @ 3:17 pm by Mrs. Yorkie

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Remember that last item on my list of things to do? Well, Mr. Yorkie and I have finally gotten around to doing something about it! :)

Despite my Cuban heritage, I was totally skipped over when it came to distribution of the rhythm gene. I’ve never felt comfortable out on the dance floor, and for that reason have always sat out on the sidelines at every wedding I’ve ever been to. My biggest fear since we got engaged has been that our first dance will look more like a scene from some middle school spring fling, with us standing in place, awkwardly shuffling our feet from side to side. (That’s the one move that I unfortunately have mastered!)

With that in mind, Mr. Yorkie purchased five private dance lessons for us at Arthur Murray for my Christmas present last year. (Boy, he must really love me!) I can’t tell you how excited I was when I opened the envelope containing the gift certificate that morning. I couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day! “I’m going to finally learn how to dance,” I squealed to myself!

Well, on Friday night we made it in for our first lesson. I was pretty nervous. You see, since I was a little girl, whenever we’d drive by the second-floor studio, I’d always point at the dancers in the huge picture window. Now, I was going to be the dancer in the window. What an exciting, yet terrifying prospect!

For our first session, Luis (our patient, yet funny-as-heck instructor) taught us the basics of the Rhumba and the underhand turn, which we’ll use for our first dance. Since our steps look more like a lunging attempt at the Tango, I know that Mr. Yorkie and I have much practicing to do before our next lesson on Thursday. Good thing we’re able to laugh at ourselves, which we did a lot of last night. Oh, and talk about determination… check out the look on my face in this photo! Ha!

Are you hoping to learn a “new trick” before your wedding?

My fiance and I are making an appointment at our local Arthur Murray in the coming weeks.
I’m so very nervous, but I’d be even more nervous getting out on the dance floor without an practice/training.

I’m nervous to be on the dance floor with my FI because he doesn’t know how to shake his bum. We have a few weddings to attend before ours, so I’m definitely going to get him on there!

Good luck w the lessons! I agree, you guys look great together!

I took a few classes 2 weeks before the wedding, and it was pretty fun. The husband was little hesitant at first, but he came around and we picked up a few tricks, mainly turns and dips. Nice posture for the two of you!

too funny! we just had our first first-dance lesson, too. being able to laugh at ourselves was invaluable. i have a tendency to lead (oops!) so the dance teacher made us dance with MY EYES CLOSED! there was no way i could lead without knowing where i was in the room. it really went so much better. now if only i can figure out how to do this right on my wedding day!

you look great in the photos. can you imagine yourself in your dress? :)

My FI is a scene stealer! He is not a great dancer, hes just enthusiastic!

I would absolutely LOVE dance lessons. But hes more hesitant.

Must work on this…

Thanks for the inspiration Yorkie! Im sure you two will sizzle on the floor with the rumba!

What did you think of your first lesson other than having a nice and funny teacher? Does it seem like something that you guys will master for your first dance? Is it weird dancing in front of someone watching? Ive danced when I was younger but havent since 5 yrs old. I love the dance…but nothing that great like professional or anything! I want out first dance to look like we know what we’re doing but Im nervous about dance lessons.

haha we’re dorks when it comes to dancing. we had a couple of complimentary salsa classes when we did a spanish course in Ecuador, and let’s just say…. we didn’t fall flat on our faces. and that’s about as good as we managed :P

We’re hoping to take free dance lessons at our university before the big day. The funny part: it was HIS idea, not mine!

Well, we had our second lesson last night and learned a couple of new moves. It’s really fun and Mr. Y honestly enjoys it, too. I asked him afterward what he thought about continuing with lessons after the wedding, and he said definitely! :o)

Our goal is simple: to not look awkward. I already feel a lot more confident. Just seeing me dance will be a first for everyone, especially my parents. I can’t wait!
