More Pain in the Peep Household

May 22nd, 2009 @ 2:31 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

You are probably wondering how crazy I must be to constantly be talking about the ups and downs of wedding planning.

But yesterday, Mr. Peep and I found out that our honeymoon is a real pain! Before we could jet off on our fantastic honeymoon to Panama, we needed shots!!!

Source

While at my annual check-up a few weeks ago, not only did I have to get a Tetanus shot, but I found out that our health care provider also suggested us to get Hepatitis A shots and Typhoid shots.

So yesterday, we took a shot in the arm for love, and a safe and happy honeymoon.

I have to say, I had a horrible reaction to the Tetanus shot. I am so glad that I went in early for that one—my arm was swollen, red and super sore for days—not what you want right before your wedding day!! But yesterday we were in and out in 5 minutes (thus, no time for pictures) and the other two shots weren’t that bad. Although, poor Mr. Peep is hurtin’ from his Tetanus shot today!! The best part was that our health care covered all of it. (I’ve heard that travel shots can be really expensive.) The worst part was that we have to go back in 6 months for a second Hepatitis A shot. Bummer.

Please consider this post a public service announcement: Don’t forget to find out if you have to get shots before you go on your honeymoon.

Anyone else traveling somewhere on the their honeymoon that requires special preparation or shots?

We had to get a whole slew of shots before we went to Thailand. We’re thinking about visiting Brazil, too, so we stocked up on even more shots! Yellow fever, typhoid, tetanus, hep A & B, … Mr. Cubbie thought we should get the japanses ensephylitis (sp??) shot, but I thought that was a bit much.
Are you going to need to take doxycycline for mosquitos?
The tetanus shot DOES hurt - holy cow does it hurt!! I couldn’t move my arm for 2 days!!!

I just had an appointment to pick up malaria pills and Hep A shot #2….

Beware - if you’re on the pill, some prescriptions may decrease the effectiveness of the pill. We’re hoping to NOT have a honeymoon baby. Eek!

@katrinab: Yes where are you going??

@sambasoo79: When you say some prescriptions- are you talking pills or shots, do you have one in mind? We aren’t doing the Malaria pills, but we really don’t want a honeymoon baby!!

Be happy you did it early. If you are too close to your travel date, the typhoid shot goes in the bum! They give you antiserum shot instead of a vaccine, also doesn’t last as long.

It’s sooo cool to see you’re going to my home country for your honeymoon! I am going to Panama to get married (August 1), and I’m so excited. I was born and raised in Panama… and I have all my Hep shots, but no malaria, typhoid, yellow fever, or tetanus. Hmmm.

I had to get my tetanus shot a couple weeks ago and I had the same reaction. My arm looked like there was a golf ball in it, right where she shot me, dang! Thank God it was way before our wedding day….haha.

FYI. There isn’t a Malaria vaccine. I suggest Malarone myself and I’ve on many malaria drugs. :)

Yes, be very lucky your insurance covered all that! When I went to Costa Rica last summer, I had to get Hep A (shot 1), tyhpoid and then malaria prophylaxis and antibiotics in case of traveler’s diarrhea (which sadly enough we needed) and it was over $300! Maybe closer to $400, but I’ve blocked it out. Student insurance bites - which is why I’m waiting until the last minute of the 12 month window to get my second Hep A shot, I’ll be on FH’s insurance :)

@Miss Peep Toe: I don’t know which prescriptions sambasoo79 is talking about in particular, but all antibiotics impact the effectiveness of Birth Control… also some BCs are effected by St. John’s Wart.

I spent time in Africa during high school working at an orphanage - I had so many shots I felt like a pin cushion!!!

I just read your post about Panama! I went to Panama this winter and loved it. But PLEASE be careful in Panama city! There are a few very high crime areas. My friend and I pretty savvy travelers but we were robbed while walking through a bad area at night (yeah, it was dumb of us to be there at night, but the bad pocket was nestled in the heart of a touristy area).

Bocas del Toro is great! If there’s any way to squeeze in a San Blas visit, I’d highly recommend it!

I’m so afraid of needles! Ouchie! The mr. knows this very well and I’m sure he’ll understand why I we can ONLY honeymoon where shots will not be needed… now I just have to tell him, hehe.
