Something Sweet for the Groom

May 22nd, 2009 @ 8:26 am by Mrs. Taffy

I’m excited to show you Mr. Taffy’s idea for his groom’s cake. You may remember that he proposed to me by hiding the engagement ring on a 7″ record. Mr. Taffy wanted to reference his method of proposal, along with his love for vinyl, through his very own cake.

We thought about scanning the actual record that he played while proposing, but we decided to make a personalized label instead. 530 S. State is the address of our venue; our wedding city and date is the “recorded in and on” text, etc. I love how he wrote “High Fidelity” as a reference to our wedding vows. He wrote “arranged by M. Taffy”, because he planned the engagement and the groom’s cake. And did you see the words Mrs. Taffy? Whoo! :)

We thought about using a Motown label for the cake, as we are both from the Detroit area, but decided on Blue Note for the following reasons:

  1. Blue Note is a label that Mr. Taffy collects.
  2. It can be a play on words- “something blue”, and also “go blue”, as we are getting married at the University of Michigan Union.
  3. Our wedding colors are blue!

We are ordering a decal of the label, and our cake baker is going to frost the cake with icing “grooves” on the top and the sides, so it looks like there is a stack of records. Mr. Taffy is really excited! :)

We might throw a photo or two on the table from our record store engagement session with A Girl In Love:

The cake will be on its own table on the way to the bar, so our guests will be able to get a good look at the cake. :)

Are you having a groom’s cake?

Love the label and love the groom’s cake idea, but am very upset that I somehow missed your original posting of engagement pics! They are too cute!

That’s awesome!

I wanted to do a hockey-themed groom’s cake, but he got so excited about our giant cupcakes I decided to leave it at that.

So creative! I once made a record cake before, but it looked nowhere near as amazing as I’m sure yours will.

That’s adorable…I wish we had room in our budget for a grooms cake. Instead I had a custom cake topper made by an awesome woman on Etsy. Its of me and my fiance and we are standing in front of a big black doge truck, since FH really loves him some dodge trucks. I am having the baker put it on before delivery so it will be a surprise for him when he sees it.

Isnt it cute?

Oh my Lord, that is such a great idea, especially with you guys blending so much into one cake! You both have such a strong sense of ’self’ imposed on your wedding- it’s gonna be so spectacular!

This is the coolest idea ever for a groom’s cake! I’m going with the cliche’ sports team cake. haha

@michelle: We ordered it from a local cake supply store, then had it delivered to our cake baker. Some cake bakers may be able to order it for you as well. It was very inexpensive and quick to make- we just had to supply the jpeg image. Hope that helps! :)
