Colors That Appeal to the Masses

May 25th, 2009 @ 8:33 am by Mrs. Mary Jane

I’ve thus far been afraid to buy any one piece of my wedding day ensemble; this is mostly because of my concern about the flower colors that will be available on the big day. I’d hate to buy orange shoes and an orange hair accessory and dress Mr. Mary Jane up in an orange tie only to find… no orange or yellow flowers at any of the grocery stores in town. I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to handle this. It isn’t a big concern, but I don’t want the colors to clash. I don’t want to go completely white with my accessories, either. I was to the point of considering consulting a florist and ordering flowers - something that I think would raise my floral budget quite a bit.

So I started to pay attention to the flowers at the grocery store. Whenever I go in, I try to take a moment to look at the floral selection. I’ve found that they usually have at least a few pink or yellow bunches of flowers and occasionally some other colors, but many of them are multi-colored bunches of mixed flowers, greenery and baby’s breath. These are flowers that appeal to the masses: bouquets fit for a grandmother’s birthday, a side-table centerpiece, or a friend recovering in the hospital. With that in mind, I give you this. (What’s a wedding planning girl [with little money to spend right now] to do? Plan, dream and Google-search, of course!!)

[sources: cupcakes, pearls, pink/green bouquet, green shoe, couple, jewelry (my photo), men’s ring, courthouse, car, orange/green bouquet, green shoe, barrette.]

(A few notes regarding the photos: Mr. Mary Jane hasn’t picked out his ring yet, but some of the ones he likes are similar to the one above. And we’re planning to use one of our own vehicles as transportation: it’s fitting that they’re both white, eh? )

This is my current “vision” for our wedding day. Simple and colorful. Has your vision changed a lot throughout the planning process?

I love the soft, spring color scheme! I think as long as you stick to mellow versions of bright colors (like the shoe colors you have above) it will be hard to clash with the flowers. I though the barrette was a crazy, fun bout when I first saw it…

Oh I really like this! And the greenery in the first bouquet pic is a succulent - my mom just gave me one of these plants and I’ve been eying it wondering if I could use it in my wedding! Do you have any houseplants with pretty leaves you could use to ‘dress up’ the grocery store flowers? I’m not using a florist either.

You should check with your local grocery stores to see if their florist can make your bouquet for you. That way, you have the option of choosing flowers you want without the markup you’d get with a regular floral shop.

Maybe you want to ask your local grocery store florist if she could order specific flowers for you. I don’t think you’ll be able to get anything fancy but if you are looking for roses in a specific color, they should be able to order them for no additional cost. I remember my mom ordering roses in my high school colors; purple (not comon) and yellow from the grocery store florist and there was no additional fee.

From your sweet and beautiful inspiration board above it looks like the yellow flowers in the grocery store bunches will work beautifully with the greenery… maybe you can get a few pale orange flowers elsewhere? I’m going to sound ridiculous, but here goes; do you know of any neighbors or friends/family that have flowers in their yards? I actually hosted a bridal shower where the flowers we used at each place setting and in the ice cubes were from neighbors! I feel guilty now :D

perhaps there is a flower wholesaler near you that you could buy flowers from instead of the grocery store? also, costco always seems to have great flowers for insanely reasonable prices. and every time i buy them there, they last a very long time. gorgeous!

You are a smart girl to pay attention to what is in the stores!

There was recently an article on marthastewartweddings showing how to make flowers from the grocery store into goregous pro looking bouquets and they looked great! They even made baby’s breath look like it cost 10 millions bucks! I wish I could find the link to the article, I will try to!

I love the colors! So what if they’re more Spring than fall. I think they look like fall too…just muted tones! :D
