Going Out on a Limb

May 26th, 2009 @ 6:14 pm by Mrs. Yorkie

Going Out on a Limb : wedding family Oldoak source

Ever since our very first “date” (which I’ll share more about later), Mr. Yorkie and I realized that in addition to running, we both share a passion for family history. I’m not exactly sure how we got on the topic that night, but before I knew it, we were heavy in discussion about surnames, census rolls, and subscriptions to Ancestry.com.

Our love of family is definitely something that has brought us closer together. One of our craziest adventures yet involved sneaking into a long-abandoned cemetery in the backwoods of Allen County, Ohio, in order to track down the final resting place of one of Mr. Y’s great-great-great grandfathers.

I have to admit, it was kind of scary, but definitely worth it. These tangible experiences are some of the most rewarding parts of family research. There really is nothing like the feeling of making that connection and being in the very places where your ancestors once walked, worked and lived.

Mr. Y phoned home with the news of his latest find

Because of the importance family history has for both of us, we have chosen to use it as the theme for our wedding. The way we see it, our union is in essence the merging of two deeply-rooted families. It’s our desire to celebrate by honoring the marriages and generations that have preceded ours through various details on our special day.

I started actively “climbing” my family tree about eight years ago. My curiosity, though, dates back to childhood and the stories that I’d beg for my grandparents to tell and retell. I remember how amazed I was to learn that Grandpa Yorkie, born on a farm in Iowa, was the youngest of 13 children. (With only one younger sister, I thought I had it hard!) When I was about twelve, I put together a list of all of his brothers’ and sisters’ names. Even though most of them had already passed by that time, I had grown to love them through the stories that I’d heard.

A handsome young Grandpa Yorkie sits front and center

That list, scrawled on a sheet of loose leaf paper, served as my starting point. With help from my parents and online resources, I steadily began to accumulate pages upon pages of names, dates, and notes covering both sides of my family. I learned to find clues in census rolls, old newspapers, and obituaries. Before long, I found myself investing in Family Tree Maker in an attempt to keep all of the details organized. Over the years, my simple little list has grown to currently include more than 1,500 individuals spanning 16 generations. Crazy, huh?

Today, only one great aunt remains from that large family of thirteen children. At 92, it’s just not possible for her to make the trip from Iowa to Miami for our wedding day. She has already let us know, though, that she will be thinking of us. Mr. Y and I plan to make it up to visit her sometime later this year to share photos and stories of our special day… and to hopefully gather a couple of good stories from Great Aunt Y.

For Mr. Yorkie and me, the search is all about putting faces and stories to the names and dates that we’ve dug up over these years. We hope to find out who we’ve come from, so that when we have children of our own, we are able to present them with their legacy so that they may appreciate those who have come before them.

Will you be incorporating details to honor your family and traditions on your wedding day?

I love this. I’m actually addicted to http://www.Geni.com and have recently began to expand my interest with second and third cousins. I know I want to do something to incorporate my family but the only idea I have now is placing wedding pictures of family members in our signing table. I am trying to figure out what to do with my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary picture.

How fun! I love genealogy too! My grandpa was one of twelve while I am an only child, so cousins are really important to me! How fortunate you are to have such lovely memories of family stories and a terrific groom who loves family as much as you do!

@Angie Mae: That sounds like a wonderful project! I’d love to see the end result!

@Anne: Nope, she’s not a Sally.

I’m creating a large family tree, engraved in a piece of wood, as part of the decor for our barn reception. It will say something like “a new family tree” at the top and our (my new) last name and wedding date, with all of our family members going up 4 generations. I’m using geni.com to help build the tree before I design it graphically. After the reception we will hang it in our house, and plan to pass it on to our children someday.

I too am the family historian. I have literally HUNDREDS of pictures (including many wedding photos) of all sides of my family…his, unfortunately, is not as easy. :( I have a little bit of information but I’ve even spoken to his mom about it and they’re the kind that “once someone has passed on, their life is over” it’s really sad actually…course - too - long story short, his real mom died when he was 12 and his mom’s (step mom’s) family wouldn’t obviously be blood related…

But anyways - for our wedding I am using all of the family wedding and/or couples photos I have as part of the centerpiece.

I wish you all the luck and love for your wedding and continue growing that family tree!!!!

My FI is huge into his family tree too! He loves the Family Tree Maker and Ancestry.com. I have tried to trace my roots, but since my dad was born in Hawaii, which wasn’t a state until 1959, there aren’t any records to find. Boo.

I’m impressed by your hard work! I was interested in my family history, but only as far as my great grandparents, I never “asked” about anything further. I think my questions and need to understand the relationships were more based on necessity though; My maternal grandmother has 9 brothers and sister and each of them has no less than 4 kids, some have 7, so I have aunts/uncles younger than me and it can get very confusing ;)

This is so cool! I’ve always wondered more about my family’s history and like you, loved to hear many of the same stories over and over as a girl. My great-grandparents all are immigrants and with the name changing at Ellis Island, it’s very difficult to trace things back to small villages–that sometimes are gone–in Eastern Europe.

The whole motif of family trees and trees could be really great for the wedding! In Judaism there is the recurring theme of “Etz Chaim” (the tree of life). There is a verse from Proverbs 3:18 “It is a tree of life to those who grasp her, and whoever holds on to her is happy”.

Best of luck with the family research and wedding planning!

So sweet! I just picked up old photos from my mother for our “memory table” that will have people we’ve lost recently and photos of our parents’ and grandparents’ weddings.

Your family in Iowa’s last name wasn’t Beinke was it? That picture looks exactly like one I remember from my great-grandmother who was one of 13 born in southeast Iowa.

This is such a great post. I’m always very interested in this sort of thing, but I haven’t done much of my own research into my family tree. I have family members who have, though. They’re always giving lectures on our ancestors at the family reunions. :)

@horseshoe: That sounds awesome! What a great heirloom that will make.

@JuneBride_26June2010: Photos are such a treasure! We’ll definitely be using lots of them throughout our wedding. That’s too bad about your FMIL’s may of thinking.

@MightySapphire: Good news for you! The US Federal Census began in 1900 in Hawaii, just a couple of years after the islands were annexed. This site can help you get started, http://www.higenweb.org/index.html.

@jellybellyellie: Love the Proverbs verse! My tree is a bit lop-sided right now, because it’s pretty hard to access Cuban records for my mom’s side of the family. Tracing your Eastern European heritage will be a challenge, but I wouldn’t say it’s impossible. Good luck!

@Jen: I haven’t found any Beinkes in my family, at least not yet! Grandpa Y’s family was from northeast Iowa.

@Miss Bunny: Those family members are a great resource! Through all of this, I’ve reconnected will distant relatives online, who’ve helped me fill in a lot of the missing pieces.
