About Mrs. Yorkie

Remember how just the other day I was remarking about the phenomenon of brides with various twos? Well, I have a little announcement to make: my shoes are no longer my only twos. Nope, I can now officially be counted among the growing population of two-dress brides. Meet Delores…

A Two Bride Takes Two... : wedding dress Jcrewd source

I have to admit, I wasn’t terribly excited about this new development at first.

You see, I’m completely and utterly in love with my wedding dress (which shall remain under wraps until after the wedding, since Mr. Yorkie has been known to sniff around the ’bee on occasion). I honestly envisioned wearing it the entire night.

At my second fitting a little more than a week ago, though, it became painfully clear that it just wasn’t meant to be. You see, after tying up the bustle, there is still about a good 12 inches of delicate fabric that trails behind me on the floor. I asked about the possibility of moving the bustle-button thingies a tad bit higher on the dress. According to the little old Cuban seamstress at the dress shop, that would somehow ruin the dress. (I’ve learned that you just don’t question little old Cuban seamstresses. They know their stuff! I should know, Abuela Yorkie was one!)

Between the outdoor reception venue, ladies in heels, and the Yorkies’ new trick, there is no way that my precious dress can survive the night unscathed. So, in an attempt to protect it from being accidentally trampled on, or worse… I’m going the two-dress route and taking Delores along for the ride. I’m sure we’ll get along just fine! My new plan is to wear the ceremony dress through dinner, after which I’ll change into the party wear so that I can literally kick up my heels and bust a move. :)

The upside is that now my guests will actually be able to see my fuchsia Kate Spades! Oh, and I’ll also get to shop for a sweet little hair accessory to take the place of my mantilla. (I guess that’ll make me a “two” bride, three times over.) The downside, though, is that I’m really going to have to pay attention to my footwork. I won’t be able to hide my missteps during the dance under a long dress! Gasp!

Have you been thrown a curve with a wedding related detail?

Hehe…that’s my grandma’s name (except she spells it with an O not an E). Very pretty dress, though. I really want a short dress to change into, but I don’t think it would make sense for me to get one.

Miss Yorkie! Have you ever heard of “Martina the Beautiful Cockroach”? It’s a childrens story from cuba about finding the right suitor - so cute! If you haven’t read it, you should! :)

I think the short dress is cute and you’ll have fun. But I do want to toss in the idea that 1 foot of your dress will drag and get dirty…. so what? Is it going to be preserved and put into a museum or collection for which it needs to be pristine? If you want to wear the 2nd dress, more power to ya! But if its really just because your dress will get dirty, I’d seriously rethink. You love that dress and its the only day you’ll be wearing it - might as well make it the whole day even if it gets dirty.

I totally understand. It’s more than trailing fabric that will get dirty. It will probably get torn. I managed to tear my own crinoline from the inside kicking up my own heels. I can only imagine what countless pairs of ladies’ heels would do to the trailing dress. Too bad your seamstress can’t be convinced. You are, after all, the customer.

I’m totally doing what you are doing. Even though my dress’s train is detatchable, I have a HUGE fear of it being ripped, torn, or worse… dripping BBQ sauce on it! So I’ll wear my big elaborate dress through all the ritualish stuff, then I’m changing into a fun little white number for the rest of the party.

@Miss Bear Cub: Yes! I’ve heard it as “La Cucarachita Martina”! It’s an adorable folktale! :o)

@mdarrah: I actually would like to preserve the dress, so that if they choose, my daughters or granddaughters can wear it on their wedding day. It’s with that in mind that I selected my dress.

My deal is that, while I can walk in the dress, dancing would be a challenge. A little dirt is to be expected. But torn lace, now that’s a different story. :o)

Ay! You just reminded me of my mom telling me bedtime stories about “La Cucarachita Martina”…I thought it was only my abuela who invented her! Such a sweet time when you are little, and hopefully sweet stories to pass onto our children!

Very fun! I’m opting to find a gown that has little or no train or have it bussled the entire time! Too much fabric would drive me nuts! Love the short dress, though!!
