About Mrs. Stiletto

Burn, Baby, Burn

May 27th, 2009 @ 5:51 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

Among my many wedding panics, a couple of months ago I started fretting about all of the tealights that were going to be on the reception tables. Wouldn’t the room look awful if all of them weren’t twinkling? Especially since we bought all of these pretty “bubble” tea lights from Crate & Barrel. They wouldn’t be nearly as cute if weren’t lit up! I’d heard that most tealights burn for around 4 hours on average… not ideal for our 6 hour reception.

I started researching tealights like crazy, and did find some websites that had “super tealights” that lasted for 8 or 10 hours. But they didn’t come cheap, and I struggled to find the ones that came in the clear cups (vs. silver).

Of course, I ended up doing what I always do, and checked out Etsy. I started finding different sellers with soy tea lights and learned that not only do they burn cleaner (better for the environment!), they also burn longer. I saw somewhere in the ballpark of 7 or 8 hours (depending on conditions - sheltered from a lot of breezes and burning all in one sitting are optimal).

Etsy seller Worthy Soy Candles had an amazing deal on these tealights, and I snagged 75 unscented white soy tea lights (in clear cups!) for $32.85 - that included shipping. This was much cheaper than I’d been pricing out other places. But… once they arrived, I had to put them to the test!

Fortunately, they threw in a free tealight with my purchase, so I didn’t have to use one from the wedding stash. My free candle was purple and lavender scented. Yum! But, unfortunately, I had to leave in the middle of the “experiment”, so I had to burn this candle in two sittings.

First Burn

Start: 3:40 pm

Burn, Baby, Burn : wedding decor reception Day1s Stop: 6:25 pm

Time elapsed: 2 hours, 45 minutes

Burn, Baby, Burn : wedding decor reception Day1s01
Second Burn

Start: 3:55 pm

Burn, Baby, Burn : wedding decor reception Day2s
Stop: 7:15 pm

Time Elapsed: 3 hours, 20 minutes

Burn, Baby, Burn : wedding decor reception Day2s01
Total time candle burned: 6 hours, 5 minutes

Knowing that my tealights will last for our 6 hour reception: priceless

To what lengths have you gone to ensure your decor really goes the distance?

We have a similar color scheme/theme going for our wedding. How did you decide to place all the great stuff you got? Would love to see what you have come up with!

You’re smart! I would have just trusted they would burn as long as they said.

I filled mason jars with birdseed and then put candles in the jars. As we were filling the jars my BM said “is birdseed flammable?”, uh, I don’t know! So we tried to light it on fire multiple times. The answer is… NO, but any dried grasses that got in will quickly burn up and smell burnt, but nothing catches on fire. Phew, disaster averted!

oooh great price! I’ve found myself wondering about candle burn time as well. Unfortunately the ultra cheap large wholesale bags are just that… cheap. I’m lucky if they last 4 hrs even! I’m going to save the etsy info you provided, hopefully the deals are a go after ive located and bought my tea light holders. Thanks a bunch Miss S!

Mrs. Green Tea also ran into the same issue:

I too learned the importance of testing. actually found some super cute mini candles in glass at Marshalls (on clearance) and after stopping by 3 stores was able to get enough in the color I wanted. There was no information about burn time on the package and I too wondered about burn time so I lit one up and it went for almost 7 hours! However, my mom and I hot glued a ribbon around each candle and later learned that the glass gets pretty hot after 4 hours and the hot glue melts and the ribbon slips down the candle, oops. I think it is too late to change anything now so I am hoping they just look okay when it comes time.

@sarah: centerpieces are in the works (and being reworked) …I plan to post soon :)

@Mrs. Corn: Ha! Glad I’m not the only one :) It’s funny how something as simple as a tea light can be stressful, lol!
