Mrs. Swan's Picture
Mrs. Swan, New York City Age and Occupation: 31, Legislative Representative Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Guy Engagement Date: August 9, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: Battery Gardens About Me: I am an un-crafty but resourceful, Caribbean-born but New York-raised woman who's been known to analyze "Dancing with the Stars" and “So You Think You Can Dance”, buy stinky cheese, and use way too many parentheses. I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. I am excited to share our wedding planning journey as I hope to plan a streamlined, personal, and fun wedding with the greatest life partner I could ever imagine, Mr. Swan.
About Mrs. Swan

Props to anyone who can let me know artist of the song in the title of the post (no Googling!!).

So, after sort of getting ideas of what I wanted to do with my makeup, I decided I’d take the plunge and line up two makeup trials. In the end, they were both different experiences. One is a professional makeup artist who works in television; one does makeup as a side job. One was VERY late; one was on time to the minute. One seemed very skilled; one seemed skilled, but not as much as the other. One used much more makeup on me; one used much less. For one, I was able to see her skills with airbrush, the other one I did not, which is hard, because she intended to use it on the wedding day. One felt like I was hanging out with my friend, the other was very sweet, but I wouldn’t say we could seriously chill (this is not a prerequisite for any wedding helper, but hey, it can’t hurt, right?).

So how did they both turn out? Before I show you, please let me preface this by saying that I am usually freaked out by wearing makeup, AND lately I’ve been taking some really, REALLY bad pictures.

Contestant #1

Yeah… umm… I’m not most photogenic here, but you get the idea, right? I think the lip color will be slightly different the day of. Also, just as a reminder, I will be having a daytime wedding, so as an official “makeup ’fraidy cat”, I asked for softer colors and nothing too dramatic.

Contestant #2

Okay, hive… as a friend would say, “Miss Swan, you look kinda… extra.” Yeah, I’m going to agree here… not because of the makeup job, but because I look a bit demented. I’m my own worst critic, I guess. This makeup job was very subtle.

I won’t say which one I picked, but the choice is yours, hive! Which look do you like?

The first one is so pretty!

The second one looks too much like everyday “going to the office” makeup.

#1! It makes your eyes really pop. I know what you mean about being afraid of makeup, I was the same way at my trial.

i agree with srismi–#1 makes your gorgeous eyes really stand out. if you’re concerned about it being too much makeup you could ask her to tone it down a little. you are so pretty, but #1 is my fave.

You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself. You’re beautiful. I agree that the eyes of the first one are great, but I really do love your lips in the second one. Hopefully, whoever you went with will make you feel beautiful for your wedding day!

I’m a makeup ‘fraidy cat, too! My trial is this weekend. Fingers crossed!

I think it depends. I agree that you look very bright and fresh in #1, and I think the look is appropriate for an outdoor wedding. #2 is more natural/muted, but you still look very elegant, in a very understated way. Maybe #2 would be more appropriate for a church wedding.

I honestly think that you look good in both, so I would go with the person you felt more comfortable with - the one who was more skilled, more punctual, more professional. I say this because that person will be able to use different colors and different products to get the look you want.

I like the 2nd one overall, but I think you need a *bit* more around the eyes. The first one feels too “done” for me, especially since you never wear makeup.

I like the first one! It’s fresh and summery but still daytime and subtle. The second option is too “every day.” I understand you don’t wear makeup but that second pic doesn’t have “oomph.” Needless to say you look great in both but I like #1. I do like the overall foundation coverage in the second pic better though.

let me say that this is the first time I could really really see your locs and they are beautiful, especially down.

Anyway, I digress. I think that look #2 looks more like you on your daily basis, and is very subtle. #1 is also subtle but a break away from how you look everyday.

So I guess it just depends on what look you envision for yourself on that day. They are both very beautiful and you couldn’t go wrong with either. I know it’s also about how comfortable YOU feel (I don’t wear make up ever, either). I can’t wait to see which you choose!!

Hey Miss Swan,
If it’s not giving too much away, can you pass on the name of the one you’d recommend?? For those of us still looking in the NYC area. Thanks! And I am torn between your looks, both are gorgeous in different ways. Maybe #1 will photograph better…more vibrant. But sounds like you know what makes you feel most comfortable and that is the important thing. You’ll be looking gorgeous, either way.

I like #1 I think it’s understated but def. very pretty and gives you the right touch for a special day!

Oh and the song, I think the title is actually in two songs/

One is Method Man and Mary J I think

and the other is a Paula Abdul song

Without a doubt #1!! really really pretty!! If you are unhappy with the lip color just go for a more subtle gloss-but your eyes and your skin looks awsome! and even though its a day wedding you still want your makeup to show in pictures, i was skeptical about all that picture talk but took a few before and after trials and the makeup really makes a difference.

Here’s her site : http://www.ellenbmakeup.com
Her name is Ellen, and she’s very sweet. She does makeup for women of all skin tones.

@Elizabeth- Aight, Miss Thang. I can’t make them too hard. I’ll try to see if I can do better! :)

Both are so pretty. You are beautiful and have great skin. I think I like #1 the best for the eyes, but it’s a close call. It depends on what kind of look you want. But if you could marry the eyes in #1 and the lips from #2, you’d be set!

Oh yeah, I think you should get with look number 1. Look 2 is a wee bit too natural and look 2 is bright without being too overdone or made-up. Keep the hip-hop trivia comin’!
