Mrs. Cowboy Boot, Santa Fe Age and Occupation: 25, Magazine Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Artist and Whitewater Rafting Guide Engagement Date: April 28th, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2009 Venue: Devil's Thumb Ranch, Colorado About Me: I grew up in Los Angeles and have since lived in San Diego, Boston, Italy, Hawaii, New York City, and Santa Fe. I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. When I'm not at work, I'm snowboarding, hiking with my two dogs, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country-skiing, or boating New Mexico's rivers. Despite my boyish love for adventure, I'm a girly-girl at heart and am overly-excited to pull off the romantic, vintage-inspired, country wedding of my dreams.
About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

This past weekend, like most brides-to-be including Ms. Perfume, I utilized the three-day weekend to wedding plan. A six-hour drive put me up near Denver on Friday night, ready for an appointment-filled couple of days. First stop: hair trial.

Wedding Weekend: Hair Trial : wedding hair trial Img 332

My naturally-straight hair in the Bahamas

As you’ve seen in past pictures, I have stick-straight hair. Always have. There’s nothing wrong with straight hair–I don’t have to “tame my curls” or worry too much about frizz–but, I’ve also never seen myself with curls. I’m often fond of wedding ’dos with soft, romantic curls, but since I’ve never had ’em, I wondered if I could feel like myself even with a little wave.

The minute I told my stylist, Tasha Valenti of The Look Beauty Salon in Denver, that I’d never had anything other than straight hair, she busted out the curling iron. I showed her my inspiration photos, and off to work she went.

Tasha getting to work

Things to keep in mind: 1) I will have a fake flower as a hair accessory (more on that later), 2) Tasha kept saying, “This is just a trial. It will look much more shiny, clean, and polished on the actual day.” And 3) All pictures below are by my awesome friend Melanie Lidman who sat through the whole wedding-planning weekend with me, and gave her two cents (and sarcasm) when needed.

Style 1: Curly side ponytail with woven back

I really like it from the front, but it feels a little young to me.

Style 2: The Low, Centered Chignon

Wedding Weekend: Hair Trial : wedding hair trial P10100605

I felt like the bun was a little flat against my neck. I wanted volume! And, I’ve worn my hair in a low chignon for the couple of proms I went to. I’m wondering if it’s time to branch out.

Style 3: The Side Bun

Wedding Weekend: Hair Trial : wedding hair trial P10100704

The point of this was to have the bun peep out from behind my head so it didn’t just look like my hair was up from the front on the low chignon. As you can see from the first picture, it doesn’t really do that. Hmmm…

Style 4: Messy, Low Side Ponytail

Wedding Weekend: Hair Trial : wedding hair trial P101008 Wedding Weekend: Hair Trial : wedding hair trial P10100801

Wedding Weekend: Hair Trial : wedding hair trial P10100802

Wedding Weekend: Hair Trial : wedding hair trial P10100803 Tasha had started to pull it out before this last pic was taken which is why that one section looks particularly long. I personally like the curled ponytail and volume from Style One, but with a less young-looking style.

In the end, Tasha told me to look at more inspiration photos, and to find one I love, and she’ll do the style. I trust that she can. I was surprised by how much I loved my hair down with curls. Maybe I’ll let my bangs grow out and decide if I want them back closer to the wedding. And, in the meantime, I’ll be keeping my eye on some celebrities for inspiration ’dos.

Tasha re-curled my hair just before I left so I could spend the day with curly hair.

Whose hair is better?

So, hive, which style do you like best above? Any suggestions? I didn’t thoroughly love any of them.

Have you thought about just wearing your hair down and curly as it is in the last two pictures? If the curls lasted, that would look beautiful!

If you’d rather have it up, I vote side bun… once it’s more polished and with the flower, I think it would look great!

But you’re gorgeous with all four so I think you can’t lose :)

Your hair looks so glossy and beautiful! I agree with Mrs. Tiramisu that it looks great in your last pic just curled and down. What about curled and in a really simple, low ponytail off to one side?

I really like #1 and then the down curls that she did before you left! I think you should consider all down. How did the curls hold up by the end of the day?

1! You look amazing and I don’t think it’s a young look. You won’t have long hair forever (or at least likely not), my thought is that it would be nice to look back at wedding pictures and be reminded of all the way you look at this point in your life (omg, look how thin I was, look at how long my hair was, look how young I look).

ooo - I LOVE the curly hair, down. Is it going to be at all hot on your wedding day? How long did these curls last? Maybe you can get away with wearing your hair down!!
BTW, what products (if any) did she use to hold your curls? I think my hair is probably exactly like yours. Stick straight, but I’d LOVE to hold a curl.

I actually really like the side ponytail look on you! I definitely would consider a style like that.

I’m going vintage. The post I’m linking to shows the inspiration and the outcome.

I have the same issue (stick straight hair)- I love it down! The inspiration photos you posted look a little more messy, with an emphasis on volume- a look I’m sure you could pull off since you have such thick hair!

I love #1… A LOT! It seems like a natural fit for your romantic barn wedding. The curly loose look is great, too! I think it’s the soft flowing qualities of these two style that work best. :o)

I think style 1 is incredibly flattering on you! Definitely not too young of a look, especially with the detail in the back.

You look so stunning! I’d go with 1 or down and curly as in the last two photos.

I don’t think there was anything wrong with the first photos and I didn’t think it was too young… I thought it was gorgeous!

BTW - when she did all these styles, did she curl it first, then put your hair into the ponytails/buns, then curl again?

Are you freaking kidding me?? First, you look amazing. Do you know how many people would love your hair?? Maybe it’s just me, but I have crazy curly blah brown hair (I tolerate the curls and color the crap out of my hair). I would love your color.

Anyway, love the 1st look. I also love the all down look. Do you think it will be too hot on your wedding day? From the plans I’ve seen from you so far, it seems like the 1st look will fit best with the overall look of the wedding. But honestly, either way you’re going to look amazing.

I liek Choice #1 and 4 best. I’m contemplating on whetehr to do a ponytail with curls, down with curls or half up/down with curls.

Have you considered soemthing half up half down? I love the look of your hair down with curls. Soem people dont like down with curls for the weddign day though, so doing half up/down could be a compromise between the two.
