Do Me a Favor: Part 1

May 28th, 2009 @ 11:48 am by Mrs. Yorkie

When it came to deciding on our favors, I was adamant about not giving our guests trinkets that would either end up in the trash or (worse) collecting dust on a shelf. Mr. Yorkie agreed, and so we set to brainstorming practical favors that our guests would actually use and enjoy. Immediately, we started thinking about edible favors!

I’ve been smitten with Minhee Park’s wedding details since they first appeared in Martha Stewart Weddings in Fall 2006. I especially love the little ice cream scoops served with custom-printed wooden spoons!

Cute and green… doesn’t get much better than that! (You can actually order your own from Minhee through Paper+Cup Design.)

When I started to think about the logistics of scooping all of those little balls for our 120+ guests, I wondered if there might not be a better option for us. Something pre-packaged, perhaps?

Then a lightbulb went off in my head! It was a perfect choice (or so I thought), and one that would serve as a nod to Mr. Y’s Bay Area upbringing, which would make a nice touch. My bright idea was to serve each guest an IT’S-IT at the reception!

source

Talk about a San Francisco treat! Rice-A-Roni ain’t got nothing on the IT’S-IT! If you’ve never had one, imagine this: vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two old-fashioned oatmeal cookies and dipped in dark chocolate goodness. (Oh man, I wish I had one right now!)

Surprisingly, Mr. Yorkie wasn’t too keen on the whole ice cream idea, citing two main objections. The first was South Florida’s summer melt factor, to which I reasoned (like only a Miami native can): “It’s hot here all year long. Wouldn’t you think our guests would appreciate a cool treat at our outdoor reception? Plus, there are such things as cute, old-fashioned ice cream carts that we could rent!”

source

The other issue that he had was with our guests’ personal tastes. “What if they don’t like them?”, he asked. My first thought was, ‘Great! More for me!’ But I guess he had a point; some people might not like yummy ice cream treats. (Yeah, weirdos!) I guess it’s kind of like in the same way that not everyone (um… me!) might like Jordan almonds. Unfortunately, not too many couples I’ve known have taken that into consideration before choosing them as their favors! :)

Considering that IT’S-IT ships overnight express, I wasn’t too worried about melting. The cost of the shipping for the 6 cases that we’d need, though, was nearly double the price of the ice cream itself. The breakdown of $2.19 per guest wouldn’t be that bad at all. Had our wedding been in the Bay Area, where customer pick up is an option, you can bet we’d be serving those babies at our reception!

Alas, we’re getting married in Miami… and thus, decided to keep looking.

Have you considered opting for regional favors at your wedding? What are some ideas that you’ve come up with?

We’re getting married in Colorado (where I’m from) but my fiance is from Ohio - so we’re making Buckeyes and serving them up in cute little to go boxes!

Ooh…I’m going to SF in June! Woo hoo, I will try and IT’s-It and report back :) Bummer you can’t do this, but I’m sure you’ve found plenty of local Miami treats!

As I posted about earlier this week, we’re doing granola from a local non-profit bakery…while it’s not a famous treat for Chicago, it’s tasty delicious and local!

Okay first off those things so DE-LISH-US! Would it be weird to have them overnight me just one?
I’m sorry you ice cream favor didn’t work out, if I was a guest I would LOVE that… but I totally understand how logistically it wouldn’t have worked.
We went to a wedding a few weeks ago where the Bride and Groom served cotton candy and I thought it was a really cute idea :)

I live down here (Miami-South Florida) and know of someone in Miami that has a mobile ice cream truck. I don’t remember their name but I know she has a website. She usually drives around the Design District, Wynwood, and Downtown during events. She’s also available for private events. She’s a friend of a friend.

As for our wedding favors, we haven’t fully decided on them yet, but we are having themed goodie bags. 4 different themes, each goodie bag will be filled with a few items to help each person “make” that theme in actually. The themes are things that my fiance and I love to do together.

oh, if I had it my way, I’d totally ship in Eegees from Tucson AZ. They’re this icy-fruity goodness that’s only sold in Southern AZ.

We’re giving out jars of local “organic” honey! Its not exactly “native” to Ottawa and the Eastern ontario region hah…but its local and fits with our outdoorsy summer theme :)

I completely agree. Trinkets are a waste of money, and everyone I talk to about it says they’ve always ended up in the trash. We’re doing edible favors as well. We’re having a destination wedding, and while the candy bar will serve as the guests’ favors at the reception, we’re also doing welcome baskets, and in them only including local fare: water bottled from the area and potato chips, which were invented in that town (both plain and chocolate-covered, yum!).

Edible is totally the way to go!

Mmm…I love IT’S-ITs!!! That is truly such a cute idea! I get a hankering for them every time I pass by the factory :) Since they won’t work for your reception, maybe you can order them for some other special occasion like a birthday party or shower? It’s too good of idea to pass up.

@IA Snowflake: Eegees are the best! Their grinders are to die for. You know, they do offer cross country ordering…

Yay for IT’S-ITs! (Especially the cappuccino flavor!) We seriously considered getting these as favors for our Bay Area wedding. But the latest time you can pick them up is 3:30pm on Friday, and the dry ice they supply is only supposed to keep them frozen for 24 hours. Not quite right timing-wise for our Saturday evening wedding. And there will be enough happening on the day of the wedding without having to have someone locate more dry ice.

So I guess it’s back to the drawing board on favors for us too. I’m really curious to see what you decided on, Miss Yorkie! :)

Since we’re having our wedding in Michigan in October, we will be giving out personal-sized jugs of apple cider from a local cider mill. We will also be including a small sash of mulling spices. Since I will have only 24 guests, I may also include coffee mugs as part of the favors but only if I can find them to fit in my budget. So far no luck, but I’m still searching since I have a few months.

I have never heard of an It’s It but your description sounds yummy! The man and I are currently discussing favor options. He likes the trinket idea, he says he wants people to have something to commemorate the day. I am trying to tell him that no one but us wants to commemorate it.

I went to a wedding last summer and during the outdoor tent reception an ice cream truck came singing up the driveway and the bride and groom jumped aboard and started passing out ice cream to all of the guests. It was so much fun! They used a shot of them handing it out as a thank you postcard. ADORABLE! I vote that if you can’t bring the Bay Area Ice Cream to you, do an ice cream treat anyway!!

Since my fiance is from Baltimore, we are having Berger Cookies shipped in for late-night snacks. We are also serving gelato via a cute cart in some of my parent’s favorite flavors (blood orange, strawberry, and chocolate!) We are an August wedding - so it will be hot!
