Guy Gifts

May 28th, 2009 @ 4:52 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

We’ve gone through a lot of gift ideas for the guys - we’ve considered ties, beer mugs/highball glasses and/or money clips, and even Chucks. But the mister just couldn’t decide, so we tabled the discussion for a while. Guy gifts are so hard… a lot of guys don’t wear ties or cufflinks regularly. We don’t want to gift them something that they wouldn’t really have a use for… that doesn’t feel very much like a gift!

Mr. S was looking online the other night for ideas, when he thought of the Flip video cameras. Small. Handy. Kind of fun. And a lot of people don’t have actual video cameras these days. They may record video through their phones and still cameras, but a Flip would be fun to have when you’re on vacation or somewhere you don’t really want to risk damaging your nice digital camera. So… enter the Flip!

So cute and compact. These babies come in a bunch of different fun colors, but fun colors come at a price. And white is manly, right? Flips also come with different recording length capabilities, the cheapest being 30 minutes. So, Amazon has these white 30 minute flips for $60. Not too bad!

They’re easy to use, gadget-y, and somewhat within the budget. I can pretty much see all of our groomsmen using these at some point in time. So, these are definitely leading the groomsmen gift race! We’d love to be able to give these to our 3 ushers as well, but after buying 5 of these for the groomsmen (and, you know, maybe one for us…) we probably can’t afford to buy any more. So, the ushers may be getting… duh, duh, duh… ties! I know, I know. But we’re not going to ask them to rent tuxes, so that seems like a fair trade off.

Also, we’re not having a videographer. Wouldn’t it be fun to attach a little note to these when we give them to the groomsmen at the rehearsal dinner and encourage them to take little snippets of video throughout the wedding day? What a fun keepsake!

Have you chosen to give something “gadget-y” to your groomsmen?

Even as a bmaid I would rather get something like this. IMHO, if I get another Pashmina I am going to throw up a lil. They are beautiful, but I would prefer something useful like this.

My FI’s Best Man will get a super-tech Leatherman tool. It looks BLAH to me, but FI oohs and aahs over that thing, so it must be very cool. I like your camera idea though, what an awesome way to appreciate your peeps (and maybe get some cool video snippets!).

We’re thinking of giving them those Reef sandals with bottle-openers built into the soles. ; )

I love my HD Flip Mino (although I don’t use it very much). It’s very easy to use–upload & edit.

Here’s a hint though on how I puchased mine (since I didn’t want to spend cold cash)–I used my credit card points (and I have so many of them since I try to pay for everything by cc & pay of the card)! Quick and easy!

We were gifted a Flip HD from our registry before our wedding, and it turned out to be the best gift ever. We put it on a tripod and recorded the entire ceremony. It picked up all the audio and the picture is excellent. I highly recommend this as a groomsmen gift, it’s so much fun and since it’s easy to use they’ll actually get to enjoy it. We got our groomsmen iPod shuffles.

My dad got a Flip for Christmas and he LOVES it! I swear he does not leave the house without it, so this is a perfect groomsmen gift. It is very easy to use, too!

I think this is a really great gift idea! Plus it would be awesome to get your groomsmen’s perspectives of your reception!

Oh, I love this idea! We too are going sans videographer, so I’m considering getting the 120 minute version of the Flip for our GMs and encouraging them to tape some footage on the big day . . .

I had not heard of the Flip but it seems like a great idea nad people like it. I know it gets pretty pricey to buy groomsmen gifts but I wonder if 30 minutes is too short, can they upgrade with a larger memory card or something later if they want to? I don’t know how into techie things they are but my FI loves gadgets and always tries to get as much memory/capacity as possible. Now I”m going to go look into getting one of these for my upcoming vacation :)

I love the Flip! I can’t believe you found it for $60! That’s great!
Are they reusable? Like can you DL the clips onto your hard drive then delete and reuse? I assume so. :)
Great gift!

@Gerbera - The Flip has a built in USB drive that pops out and plugs straight into your PC. The software is pre-loaded into the Flip so there’s no external CD to load additionally. It downloads & does all the work!

You can then delete the clips & reuse. Depending on the model they also can run on batteries or a rechargeable internal battery.

If you do get the HD model be sure you’re downloading onto a PC with a good quality video card - both of our laptops do not have this and the video comes out choppy b/c it is so large.
