About Mrs. Joey

Reading Out Loud!

May 28th, 2009 @ 12:43 pm by Mrs. Joey

After my mini-ceremony tantrum, Mr. Joey and I sat down and selected readings for our ceremony. We each picked one and agreed on the third. So, here are our picks.

My pick: Reading 1

Wherever you go, I shall go,
wherever you live, I shall live.
Your people will be my people,
and your God will be my God.
Where you die, I shall die and there I shall be buried.
Let Yahweh bring ills on me,
if anything but death should part me from you!

– Ruth 1:16-17

Mr. Joey’s pick: Reading 2

Strive for the greater gifts.
And I will show you a more excellent way.

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels,
but do not have love,
I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

And if I have prophetic powers,
and understand all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have all faith,
so as to remove mountains,
but do not have love,
I am nothing.

If I give away all my possessions,
and if I hand over my body to be burned,
but do not have love,
I gain nothing.

Love is patient;
love is kind;
love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude.

It does not insist on its own way;
it is not irritable or resentful;
it does not rejoice in wrongdoing,
but rejoices in the truth.

It bears all things,
believes all things,
hopes all things,
endures all things.
Love never ends.

–1 Corinthians 12: 31-13: 8

Our Pick: Gospel

Jesus said to those around him:

“From the beginning of creation,
’God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother,
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.’

So they are no longer two,
but one flesh.
Therefore, what God has joined together,
let no one separate.”

– Mark 10: 6-9

So we finally picked out readings. My reading is actually a conversation between two cousin, but I liked it apart from the last line. Mr. Joey went for a very popular reading. We’re not sure we’re going use the entire text above. We’re still checking on that.

Did you pick your ceremony readings together or did each of you select one?

We picked our readings together, well actually, I gathered a bunch and we narrowed them down together. I REALLY like your choice from Ruth. Leave out the last line if you don’t like it. Nothing’s stopping you!

We found out that we can shorten Mr. Joey’s pick and start from the “Love is Patient,” line.

The 2nd reading was actually read at mass a few weeks ago and I remember liking the beginning and then realizing it was actually that passage and being kind of disappointed because it’s the popular one. Not that there’s anything wrong with it [it's pretty perfect for a wedding!], I was just excited to hear something that I thought was different. [I guess that just shows how well I know my bible passages... haha]

I really like your choices though!

I love your selections. That last line of the verse from Ruth is actually a pretty powerful statement. Talk about promising before God till death do you part!

I love Mr. Joey’s pick. It’s popular for a reason - I think it’s the best marriage advice of ALL time. The other day, I was feeling terrible for something I had criticized my sister about - and you know what came to mind?

“If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.”

Such beautiful advice for ALL relationships!

I did LOTS of research and narrowed it down to 10 choices and we chose them together.

I know the Ruth verse is used a lot in weddings, so it’s perfectly fine. Like Miss Yorkie said, it’s a very powerful death do you part verse.

we are using the ruth verse as a portion of our vows. Why don’t you like the last line, Miss Joey?

@LatteLove: Not sure. It sounds a little negative. I’d love it if none of them spoke of death — just life, but I guess that’s part of life. I don’t disagree with the last line.

We both selected one and chose a special friend to read for us. We didn’t tell each other what the readings were, so it was a nice surprise to give one another during the ceremony.

Aw, I think you SHOULD use the whole reading!! Everyone knows the middle bit, but it’s the rest of the reading that gives meaning to the words.

Actually, I think that passage from Ruth is between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law (Naomi and Ruth). In any case, it’s a great sentiment.

OK ok ok… Ruth is my FAVORITE book in the bible, so I have to point out that you’re ALL wrong :) It’s a conversation between a woman and her DAUGHTER IN LAW! How crazy is that? Ruth’s husband, brother in law and father in law all died. Ruth loves her MIL so much, she picks up and goes with her instead of going back to her own family! We should all be so lucky to have in laws we love THAT much! :)

In any case, I think it’s a perfect wedding reading regardless of who is doing the speaking. Every bible passage is really more about us and God, anyway.

We picked the verses together. I pick all those that are acceptable to me and then my FI picks 1 or 2 out of the options I deemed acceptable. Sometimes he picks one that I didn’t like then we discuss about it. If he picks more than 1 acceptable ones, I make the final executive decision :)

Miss Joey, do you plan to make a ceremony program? May you blog about it when you do. I don’t remember seeing one about it. I’m curious as to how detail one should make a catholic ceremony program (outside of Mass) if many guests are not catholic. My personal dilemma is to make sure guests unfamiliar w/ the catholic tradition don’t feel lost or can be as engaged as possible but in the same time, I don’t want my program to be bogged down by details….
