About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

On Monday, before heading back to Santa Fe, I had my makeup trial with Katelyn Simkins, one of Denver’s favorite makeup artists. It took almost two hours and we still didn’t quite achieve the look I like, but we got darn close. My inspiration was heavily based on the Vogue cover I blogged about here. We were aiming for dewy skin, a pewter, smudgy eye (although, not too smoky), rosy cheeks, and a glossy, stained lip. Before I show you the results, though, you deserve a makeup less picture (even though I wear a little bit of natural-looking makeup on a daily basis).

Now, onto the trial. Here’s the first iteration:

It could’ve been the light in her kitchen, but I looked pale. My eyebrows looked too dark. And the false eyelashes were making me feel weird about my eyes. The look was a little bit vintage, and not sun-kissed enough for what I want. Not really knowing how to tweak this look in order to achieve what I’m going for, I asked her for more cheek color and gold eyeshadow, as opposed to pewter. I really had these things in mind: gold, apricot, peach, coral, and dewy.

This is the second version:

She didn’t take much off, but she added gold to my lids and another layer of blush to my cheeks. She also added a little under-eye smudge to get the look that’s on Vogue’s cover. Unfortunately, the gold she used is a little more green than yellow. I became obsessed with gold eyeshadow when a friend of mine showed me MAC Goldmine. Luckily, Katelyn said she could pick some up before the wedding.

For the third try, I wanted darker lips. I’ve always loved a bride who can pull off the less eyes, more lips look. By this point, though, I think I had too much on my eyes to try it out.

Wedding Weekend: Makeup Trial : wedding makeup trial P10101302

It came out a little vampire-y. Maybe it was just the lipstick color? I think I’m sticking with a more natural-colored gloss. She’d also added more cheeks above, too. After this, we went back to the neutral lip color and my trial was finished.

As the day progressed, I took a few more pictures to see what the makeup would look like over time.

Wedding Weekend: Makeup Trial : wedding makeup trial P101014 Two hours after the trial. Still holding strong.

Six hours later.

Katelyn definitely achieved the skin, cheeks, and lips. Now, I need to find a very specific picture of the overall look I want (in particular, eyes) so that she can achieve it on my wedding day. I definitely think she has the skills to pull it off and she got the dewy skin right (without too much shine) which seems hard to do. This is similar to what I want in terms of color:

Her lips and cheeks are similar to what I want, but with gold eyes

Did your first makeup trial go as planned? Or did you have to work towards what you wanted?

you look GORGEOUS! I have to say, the 2 - 6 hour later photo are my favorites in regards to your eyes - you can see the enhanced look but its not too heavy. For the lips, I agree with your saying you want a natural-colored gloss. you are so naturally beautiful that too much makeup is overwhelming. Definitely think you’re on the ricght track though, I cant wait to see it all together!!!

OMFG-I had FIVE trials! (The only one who got it right @ M.A.C. doesn’t freelance & is on vacation during my wedding!) So..my wedding is in less than a month–I have no make-up & no hair person (no hair trials as of now). AAAAAAAAAAAH. Btw, I like look #1 best.

Overall your makeup is beautiful - all versions!

I would note that professional cameras/lenses and subsequent airbrushing/photoshop-ing diffuse makeup A LOT. So your makeup artist will need to strike a balance between not looking overdone in person, but not looking bare-faced in photos.

One of the recent Weddingbee Pro posts talks about this as well.

I used this company for my wedding makeup last year: http://www.sureshbeauty.com. Their artists were amazing! So nice, super professional, and I looked like hollywood royalty! Good luck girls!

Ugh, my trial was a disaster. My MUA had some great inspiration pics, and I pointed at what I wanted. But in the end I had horns on my eyelids (hello?? BLEND!!) and I was SOOOOO disappointed!!! Now I’m just not even going to get a MUA. I’ll do it myself. I did great for some other huge events in the past, why shouldn’t I trust myself for my wedding??

I agree with KellyV, you are so naturally pretty that you don’t really need a lot of make-up, but you want enough to make sure it will great on camera and last throughout the night. After six hours your skin still looks great. So I would definitely focus on perfecting the golden eye you want and go with a lighter lip.

Gosh you are gorgeous. You don’t even need makeup. The more natural the better.

You are so pretty Miss CB :)
I love the second version, but agree that it would look better with a golder eye.
My first (and hopefully only) make-up trial in next weekend - wish me luck!

Wow, you look beautiful!! I love the second trial because it’s natural, but with a great sun-kissed glow. I love the gold on your eyes, too. I think you’re right to go with a paler lip color–it lets your eyes shine. You look gorge!

As a Makeup artist I think all of them looks gorgeous.. The artist definitely knows what she is doing..

However, its what you want that matters.. I like the 6 hours (after) pic look..It looks very good.. I think for the bare minimum eye you are going for..
But of course a stronger lip..
I think you can pull off any look but you definitely want something you are very comfortable with..

Wow… she’s got some skills! I am terrified because, like you, I wear very neutral makeup regularly (if any at all), and I’m DIYing it. I live in CO, but it’s a small ski town (Steamboat) without too many makeup options. You totally scored with this girl. All of the versions look amazing. I love that 6 hours later you still look terrific, but you weren’t overdone to begin with!

Sooooo pretty, Miss CB. I love them all. You seem really close to figuring it out. I just have to say a big thank you for your post on vintage stamps. The tip to search by the catalog number was spot on! I’ve become a bit obsessed with all these old Texas and California stamps (wedding is in Cali but my honey is from Texas). Most people probably won’t notice, but I am loving this project. So, thanks!

I think the second look is more natural-looking, and a closer style to what you look like regularly!

I agree with Miss Bruschetta! I love number 2! You look stunning in all of them but #2 is a perfect blend of a natural/glam look!

Fab!
