About Mrs. Bruschetta

(Cook)bookish

May 29th, 2009 @ 11:21 am by Mrs. Bruschetta

I was initially very resistant to theme our wedding. While I totally admired weddings that carried a cohesive “feel” from the paper products through the reception, I doubted I’d be able to mastermind something similar on my own. I was also hesitant to select an element — graphic or otherwise — on which to “build” the wedding; what if I tired of it in the middle of the planning (don’t forget: the Bruschetta engagement is just shy of two years!) or after the wedding? Would I look back and roll my eyes at the contrived theme? What would feel “us” enough, even 10 years from now?

Well, as you know, we opted for bright, bold colors as part of our theme. And by our one-year countdown party, Mr. Bruschetta and I had acknowledged the other thematic element that had infiltrated our wedding plans: food! The custom whisk and spoon stamp that adorned our countdown invitations served as inspiration for the name of the Blogger site which will be an information source for our wedding guests. And we featured one of our engagement pictures from Reading Terminal Market on our save the date cards.

This theme is really just so us. Mr. Bruschetta and I definitely enjoy cooking for each other, and we also love visiting restaurants in South Jersey and Philly. So, inspired by our culinary commonality, I arrived at the ideal guest book idea for our wedding pretty quickly. While brainstorming, I really only had one requirement — it had to be something we would use often, so we could frequently enjoy the comments, well-wishes and loving messages I hope our guests will be inspired to write for us.

So we recently visited Barnes & Noble to peruse the cookbook section, and find one that would have adequate space — including the inside front and back covers, pictures of the completed recipes, and margins throughout the book — for our guests to select exactly where they want to leave their notes. In this case, you really can’t judge a book by its cover, as some of the seemingly perfect options — like the Williams-Sonoma Bride & Groom Cookbook — are very text-heavy throughout, leaving few places for our guests’ sentiments. We did, however, manage to find several cookbooks that would make unique, epicurean guest books. (All images courtesy of Barnes & Noble.)

(I’d be totally okay with drooling over Martha’s designs long after our [much simpler!] wedding cake has been devoured.)

(Cook)bookish : wedding guestbook Guestb03

(Okay, so this one’s not so much an amazing cookbook as a whimsical nod to Weddingbee.)

And we selected a comprehensive cookbook from the Culinary Institute of America to add to our collection. I’m looking forward to working on some signage to place near the cookbook, which will explain its dual purpose to our guests — and just might contain a food-related pun or two.

What type of guestbook will/did you have at your wedding?

Totally off the subject…but I see you liek restaurants in the South jersey area…have you ever been to Pinziminios on LBI? It’s so good! LBI has quite a few of my favorite restaurants!

That’s a great idea. A lot of people are now using coffee table books for guestbooks with pictures of them in it, but I think this is great. They can add recipes of their own as well as circle/mark ones they think sounds good, etc.

This is a clever idea and fits with your theme perfectly! Food is definitely the main element in our wedding, too!

What a good idea for you guys! I love aligning function and sentimentality:-)
We did a message line, similar to the clothespin photo lines you see at some weddings. Small 1/4 page coloured cardstock pieces were clipped and strung up in a zig zag pattern along the wall at our reception and guests were invited to take one down, write us a message and hang it back up again. It was a lot more “reader friendly” than a book, because guests could stand their reading other people’s messages without holding up anyone else’s writing. We also go a lots of very creative and cute messages that were fun to read later–someone did a very accurate doodle cartoon of us, for example. I’m planning on scrapbooking them with our candid reception and dance party photos.

I didn’t mean to imply that having a book is bad–we were just into making our guest messages an interactive thing. Sorry if that came out wrong!

We did a photo book called “America’s National Parks”. We’re asking each guest to write in a photo that they love with one of their favorite memories from that place.

It will be much more fun to look at a guest book with beautiful pictures from gorgeous national parks, and since our table numbers are national park names, and we’re honeymooning in a national park, it all ties together. (run on sentence, but it works for me!)

This is a really cute idea Bruschetta :) Mr Frenchie and I also LOVE to cook, we registered for the Newlywed Cookbook b/c it had some yummy looking recipes and lots of pictures… we really like our cookbooks to have pictures.
For our guestbook we’re probably going to do a photobook of our engagement pics for ppl to sign.

I hadn’t thought of this sort of idea before, but like it!

I didn’t want just the standard name in a book guest book, so I decided to do the following:

Send an ivory piece of card stock (the same size as our invitation, inside the invitation along with an instruction card that says the following:

“Enclosed is a blank ivory card. This card is intended for you to share your best wishes, words of congratulations, or a fond memory of Bride and Groom. Please bring your message to the wedding for inclusion in the guest book.”

We will also have blank cards and pens at the wedding, for those that didn’t do their homework. ;)

I may decide to do a clothes line type layout for people to hang their messages for all to see that evening. I honestly hadn’t figured out what I was going to have guests do with them at the wedding (put them in a box, basket, etc.).

After the wedding, it is my plan to take these messages and our photos from the day and create our guestbook scrapbook. I figure this will allow us to have a unique guest book that means more to us than having our guests autographs, much like your cookbook!

@doctorgirl: I really like your idea as well, our honeymoon is a cross country trip, visiting many National Parks.

Great idea! I’m not usually a fan of guest books but I like that yours has an actual purpose. I think you might have pulled off the impossible - a new wedding idea!

Have you ever looked at mytastebook.com? You can put together your own cookbook with recipes you enter in or import from various collections and it’s expandable, so if you don’t fill it out entirely, you can go back every now and then and have new pages made up to fill it out. You can also add in your own pictures of the recipe or of whatever you want to go with it.
I’m trying to get one together to give to my family for christmas, but it could make a great guest book as well!

My family did something similar to this for the shower they threw me. My aunt purchased a recipe book and sent everyone recipe cards. Then each family member filled them out with their favorite recipes. At the shower they all wrote personal messages to me on the inside front and back covers. It is still such a sweet reminder of not only my shower but how loved we are.

I think we’re going to go with a ceramic platter that people can sign. I’ve found a couple of really cute handpainted ones that I like. Before I thought of that I was going to go with the photo mat. I’m a big fan of things that can be displayed or used instead of put in a box.

Does anyone know what types of pens are good for writing in books (either photography books or cookbooks, etc.)? I’m thinking of ones that are indelible and won’t bleed.

Thanks!
