Mrs. Yorkie's Picture
Mrs. Yorkie, Miami Age and Occupation: 30, Graduate Admissions Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Asst. Professor Engagement Date: July 3, 2008 Wedding Date: June 2009 Venue: Red Fish Grill About Me: I’m an East Coast girl with a crafty streak who loves traveling, photography and being outdoors (barefoot, if possible). When I do have to wear shoes, I prefer Mizunos, and have worn out a few pairs running marathons. I have a thing for chai, crossword puzzles, Apples to Apples, The Office and my real-life Yorkie, Bella. My West Coast transplant, Mr. Yorkie, roots for the Buckeyes, loves baseball, and climbs mountains for fun. We’re planning a fun little seaside wedding filled with handmade details and vintage charm. I can hardly wait!
About Mrs. Yorkie

In just a couple of weeks, Mr. Yorkie and I will stand on this beach shortly before sunset and pledge our lives and love to each other before 120 of our family and friends.

If it doesn’t quite look like the flashy, fast-paced scenes of Miami Beach that you’ve come to know from shows like Miami Vice and CSI: Miami, there’s a good reason. This isn’t Miami Beach. It’s Matheson Hammock, Miami’s very first park and best-kept secret.

As a little girl, I used to visit the park just about every Sunday afternoon with my family. You would usually find me waist deep in the lagoon, with a net in one hand and a pail full of critters in the other. On the rare occasion that I’d emerge from the water, it was almost always to run up to the concession stand for a delicious vanilla cone. So many of my childhood memories are set here!

Not much has changed since those days, save for the fact that the limestone building that once offered up ice cream and hot dogs is now home to the upscale Red Fish Grill, which will serve as our reception site.

The Red Fish is offering us a wonderful package at a flat rate for up to 130 guests. (Having flexibility like that with our guest list size is awesome!) Included in the package are passed hors d’oeuvres during the cocktail hour with an open bar serving beer and wine, three plated entrées for our guests to choose from, champagne toast, cake cutting, coffee service, and gratuities. Another great benefit is that you can hold your ceremony there for no additional charge.

While the restaurant does not provide liquor, if we’d like to bring our own, they will gladly mix and serve. Bring on the mojitos! :)

Seating is available both indoors and outdoors, with the spaces tied together by several French doors that open onto the patio. The indoor seating will be great for our older guests who will benefit from the air conditioning. The patio area is naturally cooled by the gentle breezes that come in off of Biscayne Bay!

The views from the Red Fish are breathtaking, especially at night with the Miami skyline lit up in the distance. With most of our guests flying in from out of state for the wedding, I know that the atmosphere out here will be well worth the trip!

Here’s a fun bit of Matheson Hammock/Red Fish trivia for you. A couple of scenes from There’s Something About Mary were filmed at the park and inside of the restaurant. Check ’em out! :)

This is a really useful weddings blog. Do you have a section on cheap honey moons? I’m looking to get married next year, but we’re thinking of doing a home exchange for a honey moon. We’ve found a site to do this, but want to know if you have any advice on this?
Thanks.

i’m dying of jealousy right now!!! my dad lived in miami up until a few years ago, and when I’d visit we would usually go to Red Fish. I flat out said that I wanted to get married there more than anything! its just perfect!!!!!!!! but my dad moved to Texas for work, and basically everyone else in Fi & I families live in SoCal. Getting married in Miami wasn’t gonna happen. But we are still getting married at the beach in Malibu…it worked out. BUT Red Fish & Matheson are truly the most beautiful spots EVER. So romantic! Congrats!

@Home exchange: You may be able to find some suggestions by posting on the Honeymoon board. The Hive is super helpful!

@ms boardwalk: Red Fish participates in Miami Spice restaurant month events during the year. You can get a great meal at a discounted fixed price at a number of fabulous restaurants in the area. Keep an eye on their schedule! http://ilovemiamispice.com/

What an incredible venue! I can’t wait to see your pictures!
I love that you can see the other side of Miami from your venue, you’re right that is great for the guest :)
We’re trying to show our guests a different part of San Diego by having our rehearsal dinner in the downtown area.

I don’t usually comment on venues, because most are boring. But, this is great! What a neat place. Looking forward to seeing your pictures! We’re also holding our vow renewal at a restaurant and I’ve been very happy with the idea. It’s so easy!

I really want to go to this park now. I’ve been to Miami and specifically Miami beach several times but no one told me about this place and it looks amazing! Your guests will love it for sure!

I’ve been trying to plan my Miami wedding since my fiance and I got engaged last Memorial Day! I’ve looked at a handful of venues but they were either too expensive or just not nice enough. The trouble is I moved to Virginia a year ago and I only fly home to Miami every 5 or 6 months so planning is taking FOREVER!

If you don’t mind sharing I was wondering what 130-guest price they gave you? I went to the website and it looks so amazing! The “history” section has those old postcards and they would make such cute save-the-dates or maybe even invites!

@miss foodie: The pricing actually varies depending on their low/high season. You can save in the range of 25% by holding your event between June 1st and November 1st (better known as Hurricane Season). :o)

Mrs. Yorkie, I just inquired about having my reception here and they told me they do not allow us to bring liquor from the outside, that they only serve beer & wine. Your post was just last month, I wonder if they just recently changed their rules. I will check with them anyway. Is there anything else you could tell me about this restaurant?

Mrs. Yorkie, thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately we’re not going to have the reception there anymore but I will definitely go there one night for dinner with my hubby =)
