Walk On By…

May 29th, 2009 @ 2:39 pm by Mrs. Glitter

Lately, I haven’t been too vigilant with my fitness goals. I guess I assumed that magically, with the pressure of our pending wedding, I would somehow become a workout machine. That never really happened. Oh well, I’m not going to punish myself now.

I noticed that a large portion of my day is spent sitting in front of my computer. Day in and day out, I sit with my shoulders slumped, and sometimes I think I can actually see my butt expanding. Anyhoo, I bought a little gizmo (aka a pedometer), so that now I have solid proof of my inactivity, and I can’t fool myself into believing that a simple trip to the bathroom counts as “cardio”.

I ordered this pedometer off of Amazon.

I love it. It’s easy to set up and has all of the functions I could ever need. (There are also fancier versions of this pedometer, too. The fancier versions plug into your computer and help you track your fitness. I’m not there yet, but still, that’s pretty sweet!)

So far, things have been going well. The accountability has been phenomenal. I am much more aware of how much I am moving throughout the day. I know when it’s early evening, and I’m still at 5,000 steps, that I need to take the dog for a walk or Shred it. I’m also setting goals and trying to get in more steps then the day before.

I’ve used the chart below as a guide in trying to avoid being considered a “sedentary” 28-year-old.

Classification of pedometer-determined physical activity in healthy adults

  • Under 5000 steps/day = sedentary lifestyle
  • 5000-7499 steps/day = low active
  • 7500-9999 steps/day = somewhat active
  • 10000 steps/day = active
  • >12000 steps/day = highly active

At times, I feel like a bit of an old fart walking around with this strange pager-looking object sticking out of my pant pocket. But in the end, I like knowing what I’m doing (or not doing).

Do you use a pedometer or any other training equipment to keep track of your fitness? Has it helped you?

I laughed at the first part of your post because you sound just like me! I have a pedometer, and have thought of busting it out, but haven’t yet. Maybe I’ll start that on Monday…

I used to have one, but it broke! :( That’s OK, because you’ve inspired me to buy one on my way home. There’s no excuse for us not to get off of our butts and walk at least 1,000 steps a day!

Best pedometer ever.

I’ve had a silly number of pedometers over time, and this is the only one where I can throw it in my pocket, take 36 steps, take it out, and have it say 36. I don’t ask for much.

I always wear a heart monitor when I work out. My friend that is a personal trainer recommended it so that I can make sure I’m pushing myself to have my heart beat in the 80th percentile. I absolutely love it!

I bought EA Active for the Wii as for 30 days it plans out your workout/rest days. It’s easy, takes about a half hour, and once I’m done, I’m done.

I think I’ve gained weight since I started using it, but that was only two days ago. So we’ll see once I’m done my 30 days challenge.

Best of luck with the pedometer. It wouldn’t motivate me, just depress me.

I used to wear one of those when I was a waitress. I walked approximately 7-8 miles per shift!! it really made me feel good! I think my tips were bigger as it was a good convo starter with the patrons…I should go back to waitressing it is the only exercise I would get right now. :) I say wear it with pride!! it will make you look like you care about your health not like a nerd. :)

I love pedometers! It just helps to make you more aware of your lifestyle, and definitely motivates you!! :) & trips to the bathroom TOTALLY count as exercise. Duh :)

I have a pedometer but will admit that the only time I’ve used it was while I was on vacation at the beach (I love walking the beach). I need to break it out and use it daily because I too am not active enough. I’m a receptionist and therefore, I sit on my arse all.day.long and don’t get much walking in. I hate it…I wish I could be up and around more.

When I started using my pedometer, I would mark my daily steps on a calendar. You can see trends in what days you’re more active than others (Mondays!). It also motivated me to park farther away, take the stairs, and go around the apartment once before going inside. It’s a great motivator!

My FI got a pedometer through his healthcare plan (and Virgin) where he logs his daily steps into the computer & gets points for walking. The more you walk, the more points you get– it can then be applied for gift cards to your favorite retailers! He’s dropped over 20lbs since he started this program :)
