A Little DIY Makeup

May 31st, 2009 @ 3:50 pm by Mrs. Crab Cake

So, here I am, 3 weeks (O.M.G.) from the big day, and I’m seriously unhappy with my makeup trials so far.

A refresher:

Trial # 1

A Little DIY Makeup : wedding makeup trial 1 IMG_0129

Dislikes: uneven eyeshadow, racoon eyeliner.

Trial #2

A Little DIY Makeup : wedding makeup trial 2 n682782476_2321581_5706538

It’s hard to tell in this picture (thank goodness!) but we went from racoon eyes to no eyes. I honestly felt like I had less makeup on then I usually wear on a day to day basis, which isn’t much.

So, I decided that it was time to go at this myself. I honestly can’t stand spending any more money having trials done that I’m not even crazy about.

I gathered colors from my and my mother’s Bare Minerals collections and got to work.

Bare face:

I forgot to turn off the flash, I swear I’m not normally that pasty!

A Little DIY Makeup : wedding makeup trial 4 IMG_0495

I hate taking my own picture!

A Little DIY Makeup : wedding makeup trial 5 IMG_0498

I did two different eyes.

The right eye:

A Little DIY Makeup : wedding makeup trial 6 IMG_0508

Rockin’ some Auburn orange.

The left eye:

They really aren’t that different. I only used one different color, but I think I like the left eye better.

I actually think I did an okay job. My bachelorette party is tomorrow night, so I’m going to try it all again, and have some false eyelashes put on.

So, what do you think hive? Let them do it, or do it myself?

I really like your DIY makeup job! I can’t really tell the difference between the 2 eyes, but it looks really good (and better than the professional trials). The only thing I would be concerned about is how it show up in the professional pictures. When I had my trial, it felt like SO much makeup but after a few hours it softened and could still be seen in pictures. Even though it feels like too much makeup, I think it’s kind of necessary to last the day and show up in the photos. I guess you could just make sure you touch up from time to time to make sure you maintain the look :)

much better, more natural. i’m doing mine myself and using bare minerals too. my friend, who’s a makeup artist will be on hand on the day and she has said DEFINATELY go with the false eyelashes. i figure, as long as i have good foundation coverage and a bit of pizzaz with the eyes i’ll be fine!
good job!

I think you did a great job, do it yourself! Love the lipstick shade.

I think it looks awesome but maybe not enough to show through in pictures? I’d define the eyebrows a bit more, add a little liner to the top lid in a dark brown and maybe a little more cheek colour and definitely go for the false eyelashes!

I would actually ask Lo over on PRO for some tips! I bet she could give you some great pointers!

are you going to do fake eyelashes for the big day? You have such big pretty eyes I think you should play them up!

p.s. war eagle! :)

@konariley: I’m totally wearing fake eyelashes. I wore them for our engagement party and fell in love with them. I’ve worn them twice since and that’s one thing I’m sure I’ll be doing.

I wore the makeup around for the night on Friday (just around the house) and then did it up again for my Bachelorette party last night and thought of a few tweeks I would do for the day of, including some of the things y’all have already suggested. I intend to thicken my liner (I had some on, but I don’t normally wear liner, so it always makes me nervous to get too heavy, but I’m going to practice on making the liner look right.) and go a little heavier on the cheek color (again, I’m a minimalist for daily wear, and I need to practice putting a little more on). I think my winter combo of fair and fairly light needs to be nixed and I should just wear the darker shade.

I am ALL ABOUT doing my own makeup. I’m so picky about it, that I feel like I’ll be happiest if I do it myself. I think you look gorgeous! Go for it! :)

I love the look of the wedding photo….it really allows your face to be center stage. You have great eyes, which is why i wouldn’t play them up too much. I think took much make-up on your eyes also builds a barrier and not maybe the softness and love you want to show on your face for you wedding day.

I also think your bare looks amazing! a touch of lip gloss, maybe some cheek stain and that fine black line on the upper lid with your mascara. It looks healthy and fresh.

Of course it also depends on what time of day you are getting married.

The makeup looks very natural and flawless. I’m not sure where you got your makeup down previously, but I think Bobbi Brown is your way to go. They have an AMAZING under eye corrector that helps brighten up the eyes while hiding dark circles. Bobbi Brown can be found at Nordstrom if this helps any. The trick with their eye corrector is that you have to use that and set it with some concealer and loose powders…but it works wonders. Bobbi Brown is truely amazing, and the makeup artists that work there really know what they’re talking about.

I say do it yourself! You did a great job it looks very natural and the lip color I like that a lot. I would go darker on the eyeliner or add eye liner if you don’t usually wear it- it really makes the eyes POP more for pictures! But you did a lovely job and look great!

I agree, ask Lo for some extra pointers. Your work looks great, but I’m sure she’ll have some tips to really play up your eyes. Very pretty!

You have beautiful features and I love your makeup — especially the second makeup trial. Please don’t be offended, but I would definitely whiten your teeth a bit — baking soda works wonders or maybe even some whitening strips for your big day! You have a beautiful smile!!!!!

It looks great! Yay for DIY make-up. :) I’m so jealous of all the bees that will be doing their own makeup! I rarely wear make-up at all so I feel really uncomfortable DIYing it. I hope I can find a make-up person I like….

ps

i think your DIY makeup job is actually quite comparable to your trial! props to you b/c i’m absolutely clueless about htis kind of thing myself!

anyway, you look so gorgeous with just your bare face that your makeup actually seems a little too much..specifically the eye area. to me, the shadow is a bit heavy and almost distracts from your oh so pretty eyes…perhaps lightening that up a bit and perhaps getting some advice on how to better work under you eyes, which i think the pro in your makeup trial in a bit better job in covering up.

do you have a bare escentuals store in your area? if you’re going to be using your own mineral makeup anyway, you could probably just go in and do a free makeover and get a lot of tips that way for the type of makeup that you’ll already be using!

I love the colors you chose, I like the orange-y color and the lipcolor as well. Great choice to go with Bare Minerals - I love it! It’s the only thing that doesn’t give me breakouts. I think the only thing you’ll need more practice on is the under-eye area - I could be wrong but from the bare face to the makeup pic it looks like the makeup made the area under the eyes look puffy even though i dont see puffiness on the bare face pic.
A secret I learned on tv once was taking 2 spoons and dipping them in water then placing them in the freezer, the next morning (wedding morning) you can remove them and place them backside-against undereyes (with your eyes closed of course) for a few minutes.
