Three years ago, I flew back to California from Chile. This is actually the 2nd time I’ve lived in Chile! There’s an awesome 3-month summer science research program for undergraduates at the observatories in Chile, and I took advantage of this before I finished my bachelors.
When I came home, I didn’t yet know Mr. Bear Cub. In fact, I was living with my (now ex) boyfriend. We both knew it was going to end soon, though. A month after I was back in the states, he drove with me (and all my crap) to help me move in to my new life in New Mexico. This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. I was with this guy for nearly 4 years of my life, and even though I had loved him, I knew we wouldn’t make it as a couple (friends, maybe, but we’ll see on that).
Anyway, in July of 2006 I uprooted myself and moved to New Mexico to start a new chapter in my life. I started grad school, I was single, and I was making friends on my terms.
While I was settling into my office one day, a little Bear Cub popped out of a box to greet me!
I’ve had my bridal earrings since last fall - I bought them far before I even had a dress, and considered very closely how the dress might complement them. In my opinion, they’re swoon-worthy, made from vintage chandelier crystals!

… Mr. Ducky proposed!! I can’t believe that Mr. Ducky and I have been engaged for a year. This sounds so cliche, but time has flown by. There has been so much that has happened in the last year, aside from just wedding planning, that has made it a blur.
I realized I never told the hive about our engagement story, and thought that maybe this would be the appropriate time to have a little storytelling session. Mr. Ducky and I had been together for a few years and we both had talked about wanting to get married sometime after I finished grad school. The question was, just when would the engagement happen? Mr. Ducky wanted to pick out the ring himself and surprise me, so I really had no idea when the proposal was going to come.
Whenever I tell this story, I have to go back a week before the engagement to Mother’s Day weekend of 2008. For Mother’s Day, I decided to go down to San Diego to spend the weekend with my mom, and Mr. Ducky stayed up in Orange County with his mom. On that Sunday, Mother’s Day, I got a panicked call from one of Mr. Ducky’s best friends. He had been on the phone with Mr. Ducky and all the sudden heard a loud crash and metal crunching, when the phone went dead. The phone was going to voicemail when he tried calling back. Of course, my heart started pounding and I immediately called Mr. Ducky, but there was no answer. I tried calling his mom, and again there was no answer. Minutes later, Mr. Ducky’s mom called letting me know that Mr. Ducky was okay, but he had been in car accident. It was one of those moments where your heart just drops and all you can do is stay focused on keeping it together to do what needs to be done. I jumped in my car and drove straight to the hospital to meet Mr. Ducky.

Yet again, Etsy has proven to be a fabulous site for wedding inspiration. Seller Bonzie was recently featured on the site. Here’s a sample of her lovely handmade boleros and wraps:

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
I am still a little self-conscious of the fact that Mr. G and I have been engaged for two years. Two years?! This long waiting period wasn’t intentional. We hoped to be married quickly. But around every corner, life seemed to get in the way.
Back in May 2007, I was newly engaged and thinking about a simple, small wedding. Enter: family, expectations, visions of a beautiful, elegant wedding, and every last detail that goes into the planning and execution of “one perfect day”. Our loved ones wanted a big wedding at a fancy venue. They wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. So we set the date for November 15, 2008 and hastily booked our venue; our most expensive vendor (by far).
One clause in the venue contract scared me. “In the event of a cancellation, party owes the entire cost of the event in full.” Brutal. But, at the time, we never imagined anything would go wrong.
Then enter the failing economy, lost jobs, and health-related issues.

It sounds like a scene from a romantic comedy: A groom-to-be strategically placed beneath the window of his betrothed, singing a love ballad as his affianced looks on. The street below is a spirited block party — tents and Christmas tree lights create a festive atmosphere — teeming with people enjoying the entertainment, and savoring a bountiful spread and each others company.
This Jersey girl’s never witnessed a proper South Philly serenade, but I love the idea of gathering with friends and family for an evening of music and munchies mere days before the wedding. I’m tickled by the thought of Mr. Bruschetta performing a tune specifically selected for me, particularly since it’s Italian custom, brought to the city by the immigrant population.

Over the weekend I had a mini blow-up at Mr. Joey over the ceremony. I was looking at readings for the wedding when he whined about how long the ceremony was going to be. This isn’t the first time he’s made these comments, and he isn’t the only one to make them. As usual, I was prepared to just bite my tongue and pretend I didn’t hear the comments. Of course, he noticed my silence and asked me what was wrong, and of course, I told him.
At first, I too was a little annoyed with the number of elements in our Catholic blessing. It seemed longer than we wanted it to be and there was little flexibility within each component, but I’ve accepted that. We decided together that we were going to get married in the church for our parents, and this was part of it. I’ve done my best to try and find readings that reflect our love for each other, and tried to add cultural elements to the ceremony. In the end, I’m OK with the fact that the ceremony is going to be 45 minutes to an hour long. This is the most important part of getting married — the part where you promise to be together forever. I don’t feel like 45 minutes is too long to devote to that.
I told Mr. Joey if he really was unhappy with the length or the blessing in general, that he could arrange for an alternate location for the ceremony and let everyone (particularly our parents) know there is change, and that I’d be fine with it. I would not continue to plan the ceremony if he was going to pout about its length or contents.

Almost one year ago, Mr. Gloss bent down on one knee, said some sweet words (which I wish I could remember), and handed me a box with a diamond ring inside.
obligatory ring shot by yours truly
I don’t think I ever shared our engagement story with the hive, so I thought I’d give you a little recap in honor of our almost engage-a-versary.

Now that you’ve already seen our invitations, it’s probably a bit late to be sharing our postcard save the dates, huh? Nah! Late is better than never, in my book! Here they are.
Shoes.
I know I want flat shoes for our wedding because Mr. Swan is my shorty… literally… hee hee!
I don’t want to be much taller than him on the Big Day.
Alright!! Colors! Inspiration! Glitter! Consumerism!
As much as I hate to admit it (what am I talking about? I love this sh¡t!), colors and inspiration can be a good thing! After leaving a friend’s wedding in early July, Mr. Cubbie & I started to talk a bit about what we wanted our wedding to look like and feel like. I like flowers as much as the next person, but I’ve never been so wild about any particular type. I mostly like them to just be there, and feel natural. What’s more natural than wildflowers?? So we birthed the idea of lavender and poppies to inspire the wedding ambiance! Who could say no to lavender? And c’mon - poppies? E.g., California poppies, golden poppies, red poppies, orange poppies… so pretty! So fragile! So inspirational! The only problem with this is that I don’t want everything to feel so (excuse the pun) pop-y. Colors that pop everywhere is just a bit overload. And not so natural, either (I think). So maybe the Muting of the Poppies will be necessary. I think it’ll be possible. Especially with lavender undertones. This getting a bit boring yet? Don’t fret, I’ve got wedding porn!
(All of the following pics come from snippetandink)
Here we have the lovely “wheat field inspiration board”. Look! Lavender! And it doesn’t look cheesy!!! We were thinking seriously about having the reception in a barn at a camping lodge, so this is right up our alley.

We’ve had our invitations since February, but they were designed back in December by our fabulous designer who we hired back in September. Yes, I’m a little crazy like that, but I wanted to start getting this detail worked out. Is it hard sometimes, seeing a lot of fabulous invitations out there, and knowing that mine have been printed for months? Sometimes. I’ve had my fair share of invitation envy, but I love what we’ll be sending out to our guests in just a couple of months!

I had originally thought I’d DIY our invitations in order to save some money. I’m not very paper crafty, though, so I think that DIY idea was more of a pipe dream. One evening last summer, Mr. S and I were struggling with the look/feel of our wedding. I decided we needed to pick a font, and once we had that font, everything else would fall into place. We both agreed on a typewriter font, so I started searching on Google for invitations that incorporated this font. And I landed on these:
