Editor’s Note: Mrs. Penguin here! I posted Miss Frenchie’s last post on her cake topper decision (since taken down) out of order, and this post was meant to precede it. My apologies!
Ever since I saw The Penguins’ cake topper, made by their friend Jenny Louwheeeeze, I’ve wanted birds on top of our cake!

The Frenchies LOVE birds! Really, what doggies don’t? Mr Frenchie calls me his birdie, and we quote that line from The Notebook all the time - “I’m a bird, if you’re a bird.”
I stalked several Etsy shops, eyeing their birdie goodness, and I decided recently it was probably about time I make a decision and order one, because if I was going to custom order some birds, I’d need to give the artist enough time for her (or his) creative process.

I am NOT a photographer. I don’t even own a good camera! But I borrowed my sister’s camera, headed into the backyard this weekend, and took a few “ring pics”. I grew up across from a huge peach orchard. We have since moved, but my mom has a gorgeous peach tree in the backyard that has just started to bloom!

Ah, table numbers. Such a boring topic, right? Yeah, I know. I thought I’d escaped table numbers (and seating charts) by serving appetizers at the reception. But then we booked our rehearsal dinner, and as of right now, we’re planning a formal, sit-down dinner. So, I had to create table numbers out of something… and on the cheap, too.
I originally planned on using our engagement pictures, but they weren’t turning out the way I wanted them to. I had already bought frames:

that I intend to use at both the rehearsal dinner for table numbers and at the reception (with signs). So, I kinda had to stick with those. And I had all this great paper that I used in both the rehearsal dinner invites (later) and on our invitations. I got this image in my head (while standing in line at the post office) of antique-style numbers on paper inside the frames, and I just had to figure out how to make it work.

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
Did I ever mention that I have a shopping problem? Specifically, an online shopping problem. Click, click, click, and my new stuff is on its way. Sigh.
But, I do happen to need a dress to wear to my wedding shower this summer. I mean, everyone will be coming in to see me, so I must look nice. Right?

And, well, I think I would look quite nice in this lovely damask dress from Ann Taylor Loft. And not just because we’re having hints of damask in our wedding (seriously, I went from all-out damask down to a touch here and there… oh, where did the damask go?!).

Hive, I need help with a decision. After that last flower post, I had a sudden change of heart. I get a little uneasy when this happens, because then I’m suddenly heading down a path that involves lots of back-and-forth with my vendor. In this instance, my florist. And I hate to seem flighty and indecisive—It doesn’t do anyone any good.
But, the feeling I got was so intense, I can’t ignore it. I started thinking that maybe I want more cream or white in my bouquet with hints of peach, instead of having an all-peach bouquet with touches of cream, which was my original plan. I am worried that the bouquet will disappear into my dress if it is too creamy, and white will be too stark against ivory. But, now I’m thinking the peach bouquet might not seem classic in 30 years. If I go cream and white, I can use a colored ribbon to add pop. Or, vice-versa, if I go for colored flowers. Give me your vote!

My mom is coming into town this weekend to help me finish up the invitations, so I went out and purchased stamps this morning. I brought a mock-up of our invite to the post office and had them weight it, because I had an inkling our invites might weight more than 1 oz., which would require extra postage… and I was right.
While I was there, I snatched up some of the forever stamps for our RSVP envelopes, since they will go up in price on Monday, and checked out the options for 2 oz. stamps after the price increase.
Every cloud has a silver lining, right? If our invitations didn’t weigh so much, I wouldn’t be able to use this super cute new ‘wedding’ stamp without feeling frivolous throwing extra money away on stamps.

Mmmm…cake…

I am officially nervous. Completely nervous. Nervous to the tips of my fingers nervous. Fluttering freaking butterflies have moved into my tummy nervous. Can’t believe it’s happening but afraid to get any closer nervous. I feel like I’ve had three cups of coffee — all the time. When I think about OUR WEDDING (ohmygodohmygodohshit), my heart races and my hands feel weak and my stomach churns.
I talked to Mr. C for a long time last night about being nervous and it helped (can you hear the angels singing? This is a big deal). I wasn’t nervous the first time I got married. People would ask and I kind of didn’t get it. Why would I be nervous? I already lived with him. I loved him. He loved me. What was there to be nervous about?
At 21, I didn’t have much to give up in exchange for a lifelong partner. At 29, I do. I have lived alone and done pretty well. I can build shit if I have to; I can deal with life alone; I can move furniture out of an apartment and into a moving van all by myself. I suppose you can say that I’ve earned the right to be nervous about giving up some autonomy. The point, at least, is that my lack of nervousness the first time wasn’t about age, it was about understanding my choice.
So many event details, walls to paint, rooms to clean, linens to purchase. So many things still undone because that’s how we roll. I have very little hope that we won’t be up until four in the morning trying to paint the bathroom and clean the darned kitchen at some point. I know it. We’ll get through it.

I remember, once upon a time, when the thought of attending a bridal show seemed about as appealing to me as going to a Star Trek convention. (Not that there’s anything wrong with it, it’s just not for me.) I pictured masses of out-of-control brides-to-be, obsessing over the smallest details, crowding booths offering overpriced goods and services disguised as great deals. I’m sure that the images from Filene’s annual Running of the Brides event contributed some to the mental image.
Well, I’m now one of those brides-to-be. While I have been known to obsess over small details that no one else will probably even notice, I don’t quite think of myself as out of control. The truth is, I’ve never been a fan of the wedding-in-a-box. For this reason, I’ve chosen the DIY route for most of our options.
There are aspects to the wedding, though, that I just can’t do myself (though, believe me, I’ve given it some thought). After researching sites like Fifty Flowers and Grower’s Box, I admitted that with limited help available, arranging my own ceremony and reception flowers (in the heat of summertime in Miami) probably isn’t the best idea. And while I’ve taken two cake decorating courses and have baked several lovely creations over the years, I’d be taking on way more than I could manage by making my own cake. The same with the photography, as Mr. Yorkie’s brother is a professional photographer, but also happens to be the Best Man. So began my search for the florist, the baker, and the photograph taker.
In November, I received an email from The Knot informing me of The Wedding Salon event planned at The Biltmore Hotel. With a little hesitation, I signed up for Mr. Yorkie, my mom, and I to attend. I didn’t exactly know what to expect, but based on the venue, I anticipated something well-organized and was hopeful to meet some decent vendors. Little did I know that I would have an AMAZING time and find both my photographer and my florist! Mr. Yorkie even admits to enjoying himself. Plus, the great gift bags were an unexpected incentive (filled with lots of great goodies!).

…reception.
Well, not a reception, actually. More of an after-party. Well, not really an after-party… more of a barbecue/picnic.

There is a place I like to visit for cute, stylish gifts: Cheetahrama. I love these amazing compacts, vanity cases, and business card holders. I recently ordered one of Deborah Gregory’s Billie Holiday business card holders as a Christmas present to myself. I discovered her items while perusing Essence Magazine several years ago. Her chic accessories feature divas of the past like Ella Fitzgerald, Pam Grier, Billie Holiday, Josephine Baker, and most recently Dorothy Dandridge. This would be an amazing and unique bridesmaid gift, or a great gift for the friend in your life who has everything, or who loves old school divas of the past.
In addition to making these fabulous accessories, Deborah is also the author of the “Cheetah Girls” young adult book series, which eventually spawned a movie or two. I also spotted Deborah on TV a few times commenting on pop culture. I love Deborah’s customer service (essentially, when you order, she answers you personally!). I love supporting small businesses, particularly by women and people of color.
Here are a few of my favorites:

Pam Grier as Foxy Brown. She’s a badass. Period. I have this vanity case.
Is it normal to be more excited for the rehearsal dinner than the reception? No. I didn’t think so. Well, at this point in the planning process, call me abnormal, because I can’t wait for the rehearsal dinner.
Here’s what’s on the menu:
Appetizers
Salads and Sides
Main
Dessert
Salmon mousse in cucumber cups. We changed this, since it was a little too heavy for the start of this very big meal! They were really good, though!
Okay, now that you know what I’m wearing, it is time to show you what Mr Frenchie will be wearing.
We decided a while ago that because of our more casual venue, Mr Frenchie and his dudes are going to wear suits, instead of tuxes. Also, this way we could buy Mr Frenchie’s suit, and he can wear it again. We bounced around the idea of light colored suits, like khaki, or light tan.
But, then, Mama Frenchie said she didn’t like khaki, and rather than fight it, we decided to look at gray… and the more I thought about it, the more I liked gray, especially with my dress.
