We’ve talked about my mother’s attire for the wedding, and now it’s time to discuss what the mister’s mother will be wearing!
My future-mother-in-law had the same limitations as my own mother when it came to shopping for her dress; the major limiting factor being that there are essentially zero places to shop for dresses in our hometown. While Mama Mascara chose the internet shopping route (with me by her virtual side), FMIL took a more hands-on approach. She came down to visit and we went shopping for her dress together, in person, at the mall.
On her first trip down, after an unsuccessful stop at Macy’s, we decided to try Ann Taylor. She tried on one dress (which is actually very similar to the one my own mother purchased in the end) that I thought looked really good on her. She liked it enough, but didn’t think it was anything spectacular, so we moved on.

Reader justjules is selling a BCBG tiered white wedding dress. It is size 8, and has been worn for a bridal shoot (not for a wedding). It has been dry cleaned. She is asking for $100 OBO.

A few weeks before the wedding, my BMs took over Mr. M’s apartment to make it look as anti-male as humanly possible. Again, I was humbled by the BMs that took so much time to prepare for the shower, and also by the friends that came all the way to Astoria just for me. I really couldn’t have asked for more!
To be honest, I was a little bit nervous about the bridal shower, because although the bachelorette party was very intimate with friends only, the shower included my SIL and MIL! Although I love them dearly and I’m very comfortable with them, it was the first time that they would be in the same room with my friends. But my worries were not needed, because everyone had a fabulous time, and it was just the best shower ever. Of course, the glass of wine I had very early in the afternoon helped calm my nerves, as well. ![]()

I’m not exactly sure how to write this post. While I think I am like many brides out there trying to navigate all of the various ideas about what I am supposed to be as a bride, I sometimes feel a little left out. As I am sure you all can see from my profile there, I am a Black woman (with dreadlocks, no less). While I love the wedding blog world, and while I acknowledge that there are many great Black women writing wedding blogs, I still don’t feel that Black brides are adequately represented. Apparently, I’m not the only one.
As much as I can identify with lots of brides, it’s always nice to see someone that looks like me or may share a similar cultural background. It’s not that I can’t identify with women different from me, either. For example, one of my favorite bees of all time was Mrs. Hummingbird. I can’t imagine someone so different from me, but I was totally feeling her!
Also I’ve got a particular problem with finding resources because of my hair (more on that later). The wedding world does not really offer many resources for women with dreadlocks.
I do have some ideas that I am excited to share with you, and will do so in later posts. Don’t start me on makeup… oy!
Instead of complaining, I figured that I would take matters into my own hands. I started blogging as much for myself as well as for the faint hope that someone else would find some helpful information and inspiration from something I’ve posted.

I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight… I wish that these shoes would go on sale.
I love shoes. I can’t go near a shoe department if I don’t plan on buying shoes. I think I have mentioned my addiction before. I’ve been so good for months and months. I haven’t bought a pair of shoes since early fall.
Well, I did it now. I tried on some shoes because they were beautiful. And of course, they fit just right.

Having a videographer at our wedding was very important to us from the start. My memory, especially in times of overwhelming emotion, is not so great, and I wanted to capture not only the words that were said, but how they were said. But by the time we got around to booking a videographer, many we inquired with were already booked for our date, or their prices were exorbitant (or both - yikes!).
Then one night, I met a guy at a party and we got to talking. I mentioned being a bride, as I am wont to do these days, and he passed me his wife’s business card - as luck would have it, she runs a videography company! I loved the name - Digital Princess Productions (how cute!) - so I checked it out and really liked their style.
It’s woman-owned (score!), and the girlies who run it, Mercedes and Andrea, are incredibly fun, delightful and cool - just the kind of gals you’d want at your wedding (or even better, in the girlie pre-party dress-fest). Their style is very unique: both girls have background in TV/film production, which lends itself to a fun editing style that I really like.

The drama: I have a to-do list that seems miles long.
The joys: thinking about what’s already been planned and decided upon. And realizing that Mr. Peeps and I are on final countdown for the big event!
The tears: the waterworks have started to fall—I started crying on the way to the gym yesterday and while making a haircut appointment for Mr. Peeps. Yep, while on the phone with a stranger, I had to hold back the overwhelming feeling to start crying.

Hive, I’ve finally made a decision on bridesmaid dresses. Thank you for voting and giving me your opinions! They were so helpful. What I’ve come up with is a collaboration of all of my thoughts so far.
After filling you in on my idea to use various J.Crew dresses (thanks to their many color-coordinated dresses right now), I hoofed it over to the store. I was a little worried that some of the dresses would be too casual, and, boy, was I right. They didn’t have the dresses I was interested in there (regardless of the fact that some weren’t b-maid dresses), but they had other items in the same fabrics, so I was able to nix anything that wasn’t dressy enough. (And, thanks to reader Slicey19 for telling me that linen wrinkles easily).
After my little research trip to J. Crew, I wrote an e-mail to my bridesmaids to present them with their options. I really wanted to make them adorable handwritten letters with printed pictures and swatches, but I was too worried that one of the dresses would sell out. And, I was anxious to share my thoughts with them and get theirs.
So, here you go. My bridesmaid dress choices. Finally. The girls will be able to pick from these:
Option 1: Embossed Cotton Printed Lorelei Dress. Color: Papaya. $118.
Today’s wiki is the Registry Checklist. Most major retailers give you a registry checklist upon starting a registry, but often times there are hundreds of items on these lists, and most lists seem overly-extensive. When you built your registry, what were the most important pieces that you added? Married brides: what items did you register for that you found to be the most practical to you in your home today? Were you surprised by any gifts you received that seemed impractical, but turned out to be extremely useful in your home?
There are even lots of couples that don’t have use for typical housewares, but would still like to register for gifts at alternative stores. What are some atypical registry items, and where can couples register for them?
Add your tips and suggestions for brides that are currently going through the registry process in the Registry Checklist wiki:

In junior high and high school, my mom, sister, and I were in an organization called National Charity League (NCL). At the end of your senior year of high school, or chapter of NCL has something they call Presents. This is like a Debutante Ball, where the seniors are “presented” to society. It’s all very Southern, and I was looking forward to it the entire time I was in NCL. Presents is why some (read most) girls suffer through all the boring meetings. The charity work we did was fun, but those dang monthly meetings, not so much.
Anyway, for Presents, we all wore white dresses, which were basically wedding dresses. Of course, we were given guidelines, like they couldn’t be strapless, and your straps had to be at least an inch thick, etc. But to buy this dress, I went to bridal salons in my area.

So, I’ve kinda been wedding dress shopping before, and I know what it’s like to try on white dress after white dress.

I know as I have been planning our wedding, I’ve been thinking of some ideas that will make traveling for our guests easier. I made a map to help guests find the ceremony venue, and then I thought, well, I can also include a map to get to the reception, as well as to the church. Then, as I was driving the interstate into the city one Saturday, it hit me… TRAFFIC!

I totally forgot that the interstate is having some construction done, thus the reason for the traffic. It took me almost 45 minutes for me to get from Point A to Point B, which usually takes me 20 minutes. I immediately thought of our wedding. It was about the same time of day as the wedding will take place, and I really didn’t want our guests to have to deal with traffic, especially the out of towners, who do not know some alternate routes to take to get there.

Over the weekend, Mary, our amazing baker friendor, sent me a yummy list of suggestions for the breakfast bar. I’m hungry just looking at it. Here’s what she’s contemplating:
Scones (many options there):
(Really, the base dough could have anything added to it.)
I really wanted orange poppy seed muffins. I saw a recipe for it in a Donna Hay cookbook, and I was sold on them.
What do you think? Which breakfast treat would convince you to get up early on a Saturday morning?
I just learned that Filene’s Basement has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is going to sell some of its stores. My first thought was: Is this the end of Running of the Brides?
While I haven’t really shared it with the hive yet, my wedding gown is from a Filene’s sale that took place in Washington, DC, in August of 2008. To keep my gown a secret from Mr. Deviled Egg, an occasional Weddingbee reader, I’m going to wait until after the wedding to share my experience with the sale.
Overall though, my experience was so much fun. Getting a dress that day at an amazing price was icing on the cake. I really enjoyed the experience I shared with my mom, sister and Mr. DE’s sister. The “Running” will probably go down as my most memorable activity during my wedding planning process.
With so many brides sharing a similar experience with Filene’s, it’s kind of sad that this opportunity may be coming to an end. The sale is such a tradition!

Once upon a time, there was a dress. I tried her on, liked her, ordered her, and put down a deposit on her. About two months after this chain of events, I started feeling really anxious. I couldn’t remember what I looked or felt like upon trying on the dress, despite the fact that I had pictures. I became really unsure of the style and fit, and I was nervously waiting for the dress shop to call me to say my dress had come in. However, I knew it would take four months for her to arrive, and it was driving. me. nuts. Looking back, I probably should have gone to try on the dress again… it would have made sense to do so, but I guess I didn’t think of it at the time (or perhaps, subconsciously I didn’t want to?).
One day, I was casually browsing the nth wedding blog I was stalking, and somehow, I came upon another dress. (I think you know where this is going.) Now, I want to make it clear that I wasn’t purposely looking for other dresses. I thought it would be fun to browse. (Even though I was a committed woman, it doesn’t hurt to look, right? In case you are wondering, the answer is, YES.) Anyway, I accidentally stumbled upon this other dress, and I fell head over heels. So, after a few moments of panicking from the realization that I may have made a huge mistake in purchasing the first dress, I emailed one of my bridesmaids, relaying to her my discovery. Shortly after sending off the email message, I decided to check if any of the bridal stores in Austin carried the particular collection to which this new dress belonged. One did, AND it was located very close to where I was working. Filled with a new mix of anxiety and excitement, I sent another email to my BM telling her this new information I had just unearthed, and to also tell her that I was going to the bridal store during lunch to 1) see if they had the dress, and, 2) try it on. At this point, I decided it couldn’t hurt to try on the dress just once. I was sure that it would be way out of my price range, and if it was, I would just walk out empty handed, with no regrets.
Mr. Beagle, this is your cue to leave!
