Wedding Day Part IX: The Ceremony

I have to admit, I didn’t put much thought into the ceremony itself. About one week before the wedding, I asked my brother to officiate the wedding. It was kind of short notice, and I didn’t give him much direction, except a link to Mrs. Penguin’s post for some ideas. He also lives in Miami, so he couldn’t run anything by me until we met up in Cancun two days before the wedding day. While we were in Cancun, he was always saying, “Can we go over the ceremony together?” I was always preoccupied with something else, like making sure all my guests we happy, eating, etc… I kept telling my brother, “Don’t worry, it’ll be great, you don’t have to run anything by me, I trust you.”

Mrs. Beagle, Austin
Age and Occupation: 26, Electrical Engineer
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Finance
Engagement Date: July 12, 2008
Wedding Date: October 2009
Venue: Church Ceremony/Reception at The Waterford House
About Me: I am a true, but rare, Austinite---I was born, raised, and continue to live in this great city! Although
I am an engineer by day, I feed my inner creative side through crafting, sewing, and obsessing over Martha Stewart. I love coffee, my mister, NPR, and exploring all the nooks and crannies of Austin.
I can't wait to share my adventures in DIY and wedding planning with all of you!
After we finished up pictures at Zilker Park, we headed to the next location. I originally wanted to take pictures at Spider House, but I thought that it would be extremely crowded on a Sunday evening (with students cramming/studying for the next week). So instead, we went to another cafe: Mozart’s. Mozart’s is located on the lake, which made for some good pictures.

About Me: I'm just your average obsessive compulsive, arts & crafts loving, funky-on-the-inside/boring-on-the-outside girl, who dares to say 'Hey! I can make that!' Nerdy professional by day, goofy won-ton by night. The won-ton sometimes comes out during the day when I'm fed the dollar breakfast at Ikea. Since our engagement, wedding planning has put me on high alert for bargains and I've been pushing my nimble fingers through callous building experiments!

When I had the luxury of blogging regularly, I thought it was silly for authors to apologize for their absence when they go missing for awhile. I think I understand how they feel now.I’m going through a big transition at work, which is also impacting my personal life in a huge way (moving away alone). I meant to blog from the hotel, but I’ve just been too drained.
I have quite a few DIY projects half-started back home. It’s hard to work on them when all my tools are 2 hours away. I’ve been working on getting that invitation template up, since I keep getting requests for it. I want to make it easy to use, and my dear brother is helping me develop a method. I don’t know if we can get it to work, but we’re trying.

About Me: I’m a self-proclaimed grammar geek who loves singing (like, really belting it) in the car. My mister and I are planning a vibrant summer soiree celebrating our passions – including food and Philly – and when we make it official, we’ll have been together for eight years! Being super competitive is in my nature, and talking excessively is in my genes. I’ve got a terrible sense of direction, but can always easily find my way into Mr. Bruschetta’s arms.
I love receiving mail. I’m that person who actually notices the stamp on an envelope, and appreciates seeing my name and address scrolled in fine penmanship.

Since the little details are important to me, I’m thrilled to have found a talented and affordable calligrapher through Etsy. (And can’t believe I didn’t know about this amazing site until I started reading Weddingbee — blasphemous, I know!) Etsy has also led me to the letterpress designer who will be creating and printing the Bruschetta wedding invitations.

Mrs. Peep Toe, San Francisco

Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Olive Oil Production Manager
Engagement Date: December 16, 2007
Wedding Date: May, 2009
Blogging Since: November 26, 2008
Venue: Hotel Vitale
About Me: I am a west coast lady who loves the San Francisco Bay Area. I love living with Mr. Peep and our animals: Huck the Dog and Ferris the Cat. I work to save the environment in San Francisco, while Mr. Peep makes ridiculously delicious Olive Oil. On any day you can find me reading the latest book I have gotten my hands on, eating Swedish Fish, and perusing wedding blogs! We are both champagne drinking foodies on a Bud Light budget. We are planning an eco-chic, intimate, and interfaith San Francisco City wedding.
So, the first 24 hours of my bachelorette were great, but it only got better.
After all that shopping we did, we needed a pick-me-up. And there is no better pick-me-up than visiting my favorite restaurant for a quick drink—The Pink Door, which was also visited by the lovely Avocado on her girls’ night out! We were in and out of the Pink Door so quickly that I didn’t even get a pic. But I will say that on a nice day—or on a nice-ish day, which was the case for us—the deck at the Pink Door is hands down amazing, as is the lasagna.
After our quick drink, we all headed back to the hotel to get ready for our evening out.
Without my knowledge, Sister Peep had arranged a surprise shower for me at the hotel. Ready to go out the door at 6PM, I arrived to this:

Mrs. Mary Jane, Grand Forks, ND
Age and Occupation: 26, Instructional Designer
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lead Programmer
Engagement Date: February 28, 2009
Wedding Date: September 2009
Venue: City Hall
About Me: I'm a career woman on the surface and a homemaker at heart. I love fast cars and high heels, and my favorite food is cake. Mr. Mary Jane and I are both full-time employees and students, and we just bought our first house. We love to curl up on the couch with buttery popcorn, Sour Patch Kids, and the latest Netflix arrival -- whenever we can get a break from everyday life.
… That is the question.
Mr. Mary Jane and I are getting married, but we’re not having a wedding. We don’t expect any showers or other wedding-related celebrations either.
While we are planning to send out 50-60 wedding announcements, my rational thought regarding this is: Why would anyone feel that they should get us a gift?

[source]
If I received a wedding announcement from someone, I’d think “Oh, how nice for them!” I would not, however, get the urge to grab my 20% coupon and head to the nearest Bed, Bath & Beyond. Would you?

Mrs. Cowboy Boot, Santa Fe
Age and Occupation: 25, Magazine Editor
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Artist and Whitewater Rafting Guide
Engagement Date: April 28th, 2008
Wedding Date: October 2009
Venue: Devil's Thumb Ranch, Colorado
About Me: I grew up in Los Angeles and have since lived in San Diego, Boston, Italy, Hawaii, New York City, and Santa Fe. I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. When I'm not at work, I'm snowboarding, hiking with my two dogs, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country-skiing, or boating New Mexico's rivers. Despite my boyish love for adventure, I'm a girly-girl at heart and am overly-excited to pull off the romantic, vintage-inspired, country wedding of my dreams.
Well, hive. After getting my lil’ heart set on J.Crew’s barely peach fall color, I ordered in a couple of their silk taffeta styles to try them on. My favorites were the Lorelei and the strapless Sangle, so I just picked whichever colors weren’t back-ordered and went for it. If I loved these dresses, I realized I’d be even more confused than I was before I posted about my three final bridesmaid dress options. If I hated them, well, then at least I could nix number one.
J. Crew’s new silk taffeta color for fall
Here were the results.

Mrs. French Bulldog, Orange County
Age and Occupation: 28, Administrative Assistant & Interior Design Student
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Purchasing Analyst
Engagement Date: November 8, 2008
Wedding Date: August 2009
Venue: Bernardo Winery
About Me: I've lived in Atlanta, Dallas and Laguna Niguel; although I've lived in Orange County, CA most my life, I'm a Southerner at heart. I work full time for a Commercial General Contractor (aka my father) and I go to school for Interior Design at night. I love modern design, music, wine, crafting, DMailing, my family, my Westies, and of course, Mr Frenchie! Mr Frenchie and I met 3 years ago on Match.com and have been best friends ever since. I love his "old soul" and how he laughs with his whole body, among many other things. We are planning our summer wedding at the winery near his hometown, just 45 minutes south of Orange County.
Mr Frenchie says he had my ring for THREE weeks before he proposed this past November… if you remember, our trip to Robin’s Brothers took place in JUNE. I was getting really impatient, and he held onto it for THREE WEEKS! If that wasn’t torture enough, three friends of mine got engaged in those three weeks. Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t have been happier for them. They’re my friends, and they’re with amazing guys, but yes, I was jealous. Like 98% happy, 2% jealous. You know what I mean? Come on, we looked at rings in June and he had yet to propose by November.
So, when Mr Frenchie checked to make sure we had nothing going on one Saturday, I had a feeling is was finally going to happen. The night before, I even tested the waters… we were leaving dinner and couldn’t figure out what to do next, so I suggested we go to The Montage. “Going to the Montage” for us means going to the public beach behind the Montage, where the resort landscaped up to the cliff and put out benches for people to sit on and enjoy the view. We used to go here all the time when we first started dating.

Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Grad Student – Clinical Mental Health
Engagement Date: September 13, 2008
Wedding Date: October 2009
Venue: Banner Elk Winery & Blueberry Villa
About Me: I am a North Carolina girl with a New York City spirit. I love crafting, blogging, laughing and dreaming. I know every word to the Anne of Green Gables and Little Women movies. I own every single Martha Stewart Wedding Magazine and have been dreaming of weddings since I was little. I believe life is about doing what makes you happy. If you aren't happy re-evaluate what you are doing. You should never look back on your life and not be proud of what you are doing. If you want to travel - travel. If you want to sing - sing. If you want to start a company - start a company. If you want to blog – blog!
How adorable are these little nests by WunderLust? I know that birds are all the rage for weddings now (and I have fully caught onto that rage), and these nests make me want to incorporate all-things-bird even more.
I can think of lots of fun wedding uses for these nests. An adorable ring bearer “pillow”, something cute to put on top of the cake, something adorable for the guest book table.

Venue: Our home and the two acres it sits on
About Me: I’m an emotional girl who loves sentimental things, parenthetical asides, and trying to do things herself. I can cook, sew, am a whiz at planning, terrible at delegating, and totally in love with my fiancé (who will be my second husband but first love of the rest of my life). For our home/ garden/ DIY wedding, we’ll be moonlighting as interior designers, home improvers, and gardeners with the help of our fabulous friends and neighbors. We can’t wait to be married, and are learning how fun getting married can be.
Ladies, I need help. Once again I’m confronted by the need to make decisions on something for which I have no opinions (my friends would be STUNNED to hear this, I’m sure): the whole bridal party-ceremony-processional-seating-etc situation. Please share your brilliant, creative, and fabulous plans to save a poor Cheese. Mr. Cheese will even make the pouty face for you.

We have three bridesmaids and groomsmen and a MOH/ BM… so 8 people, plus a flower girl and junior bridesmaid. My brother and sister — one of the groomsmen and bridesmaids — will likely be our musical team. Mr. Cheese thinks he wants the groomsmen to stand with him rather than be a part of the processional. I want it all to be simple and easy, which doesn’t seem to be an option.

Mrs. Joey, Seattle
Age and Occupation: 28, Project Administrator for Public Health NGO
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, High School History Teacher
Engagement Date: June 24, 2008
Wedding Date: August 2009
Venue: Eastside Catholic Chapel and Lake Union Cafe
About Me: I'm a Seattle girl through and through except for the fact that I don't drink coffee. I love my job most of the time because I get to travel and work with brilliant people who are trying to prevent Malaria. I love DIY projects of all sorts, cooking, and watching sports. I'd wear anything at Anthropologie and could spend all day on Etsy. I love to travel but shouldn't because I always get myself into unbelievable situations!
Roughly a year-and-a-half ago, Mama Joey called me and left a message asking me to call her back ASAP. I was in a training, and called her during my afternoon break. Her voice sounded a little shaky, but I thought maybe I just caught her after a cough or something. She said she had news — bad news. My first thought was that something happened to my BIL. He was serving in Afghanistan at the time, and well, I’m sure you can guess what I was thinking. It wasn’t my BIL, he was fine. Mama J said that she had gone to the doctor the week before and they found a few lumps on her breast. She wasn’t alarmed at the time because she’s had benign cysts removed before. She returned to the doctor that morning and they told her the lumps were cancer.
I was silent. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think, and I could hear my name being paged over the PA system asking me to return to the training room. I wanted to ask her all sorts of questions, but she said she had to go to her next appointment for more tests. I didn’t know what to do, so I went back into the training. I sent Mr. Joey a note that said, ’Mom has breast cancer. Called from the doctor’s but I don’t know anything else.’ He said he was just leaving work and was coming to get me. I don’t know what was said in the training that afternoon, or what the topic was, period. Mr. Joey picked me up and I cried the entire way home. Mama J was still at the doctor’s and said she’d come over afterward.
I’ll fast forward though the doctor’s visits — they weren’t fun.

Mrs. Stiletto, Chicago
Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit/Fundraising
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Engineer and Photographer
Engagement Date: March 2, 2008
Wedding Date: September 2009
Venue: The 19th Century Club
About Me: My fiance and I love living in the city of Chicago with our cats Basil and Linus, and vow to never move to the suburbs if we can possibly avoid it! We’ve poured ourselves into planning a wedding that reflects our personal style - modern and high contrast with a vintage twist. Blogging keeps me creative, baking keeps me happy, and grande nonfat no foam sugar free vanilla lattes keep me sane.
I’ve been absent from posting this last week… work took me out west to Denver. I was working like crazy and was literally inside of my hotel from Saturday evening to Tuesday evening, barely seeing the light of day. Ugh. Needless to say, all things wedding were pretty far from my mind.
Thankfully, my return flight provided me with a wedding infusion through the in-flight entertainment. I was flipping through the channels and was less than thrilled with the 5 options they provided - the Disney Channel, an old episode of The Office, and a couple of other random selections I flipped right by. But wait, is that Kate Hudson? And Anne Hathaway, is that you? Score. Bride Wars.
