ROCK-ing the Wedding Bands

June 1st, 2009 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Labrador

There wasn’t any music, but I sure was dancing today. Why? Cause I bought Mr. Lab’s wedding ring! Woot! AND I got it at an AMAZING steal! Double woot!

Mr. Lab came to visit me and his mom (remember, I’m staying with FMIL Lab during my internship) for the weekend and we decided to get some much needed wedding tasks done while he was in town. So we worked on our registries (our first shower is coming up in a few weeks!), mailed the save the dates, and met with our officiant (more on all of those later!).

The last thing we did was stop into Zales to peruse the men’s section. I took the opportunity to have my filthy ring cleaned as Mr. Lab began trying on rings. I must say, I was very surprised at how much interest he took in the matter. He already knew he wanted a ring that was very simple and manly, but he began grilling the lady at the counter about millimeter size, fit, and metal choices. After about 15 minutes, we knew exactly what we wanted. We left the store to head straight back home and hop on the internet. That’s right, we didn’t buy from the store. We used them to find out Mr. Lab’s ring size and metal preference then went straight to Amazon.com where we bought this bad puppy:

Best part? I got it for $24 shipped! They were having a 20% off sale plus free shipping! When we found this one on Amazon, he fell in love with it immediately. I felt weird about buying a ring for so little, but he assured me that this was what he wanted. So with just a few clicks of the mouse, it is now on its way to us! If he happens not to like it, Amazon has an amazing return policy, so no worries.

Mr. Lab loved the look and feel of tungsten the best. As soon as he picked out that particular metal, I knew we were looking at overpriced rings in the store. Zales sells their tungsten rings for $200-300! Here’s one of the rings that he tried on in the store that is very similar to the one we purchased. We’re still trying to figure out why there’s such a big gap in the prices…

I’ve heard that the only real downside of tungsten is that the ring is nearly indestructible. This can be very scary for emergency situations. I don’t want Mr. Lab to risk a finger if something were to go wrong (God forbid!), so I did a little research and found this great tutorial on emergency removal of a tungsten ring:

So now it’s a win-win all around! I joke with Mr. Lab that his ring is the perfect reflection of him: strong and cheap! Trust me, if you saw Mr. Lab with his money, you’d think the same! ;)

So what about my wedding ring? Well after all that trash talk about Zales, I should come clean with the fact that my band actually came from them! Mr. Lab bought my ring as a set, so I’ve had it since we got engaged. The band fits snugly underneath the engagement ring:

I’m really happy that we don’t have to go on a search to find my wedding band. The set option was one of the reasons why we decided on this particular ring!

Did your rings come as a set? Do you wish you had the opportunity to shop for a ring for yourself or are you glad that your rings match perfectly?

This is the exact ring we bought for my fiance! Ours was $263.00 after tax, which was about $100 more reasonable than the white gold version, and he picked it out himself! I love the tungsten. GORG!

And no, our rings do not match. I’m rocking his family ring, passed down from 2 generations (they were so kind to give it to him for me) in antique yellow gold. We didn’t feel like we needed to match, just that we both wanted to have rungs we loved.

My engagement ring came with the wedding band as well - and I love it because it matches perfectly. It is waiting for 10.17.09 in my top dresser drawer!

I love the tungsten rings, too, for the men. Unfortunately my FI wants diamonds in his ring - so I got it custom made in my hometown for 1/2 the price of what they sell it for in stores b/c the jewler is cutting out the middle man! YES! I have to admit, though. My FI is forgetful and I’m SUPER nervous he is going to lose his ring - which is why I strongly protested diamonds in his ring. :( But for the deal I got, I couldn’t say no.

My FI is going to be a tough one with the ring. He is sooo picky, but I know he’ll take an interest because he keeps saying “How come guys don’t get engagement rings?”

Luckily, we got my rings as a set. When we upgrade them (they were bought off Craigslist), we will definately be getting a set again.

I LOVE Amazon!! We got my fiance’s ring off amazon too! It was a little more expensive but WAYYY cheaper than in the store. I also had felt weird - not so much about buying off the internet (I buy almost EVERYTHING off the internet and I’m used to mailing returns) - but more felt weird about his ring being so “economical” while mine had been ridiculously expensive. But, like your man, mine swore it was exactly what he wanted and it has worked out perfectly!

Our rings don’t match and I don’t wear a band because I had my ring custom made and I think it is wonderful on its own, unobstructed.

I’m not sure what I’ll do about my ring. I have a six-pronged solitaire ring and I’m not sure what fits well with that because of the way the prongs stick out on either side slightly. FI picked it out by himself and totally surprised me so there was definitely no thought put into a set or anything. We’ll find something that looks gorgeous I’m sure but I have no idea what that is yet =)

When I purchased & received my man’s ring I was flying on a cloud. I thought it was the coolest thing ever! (I even friggin took my dog to go pick up the online purchase I too made from fedex!)
It’s ok that our rings don’t match. I wanted them to be a reflection of each of our personal tastes.

Ok that sounded weird. I bought the ring, and it was shipped via fedex where I picked it up. (Our wedding is in 25 days- I reserve the right to be flighty!)

WOw what a great deal, and I thought I got my FI’s at a steal! His was originially $350 and I got it for $85, well $100 if you count the $15 I had to pay to get the next size up shipped when the one we originally got was too small. His is tungsten as well.

As for my ring, no it didn’t come with a set, and its hard to find a band that I like that will fit cuz its got diamonds all around it. I got one for $250 off overstock that is close to what I want, and I told him for an anniversary I want to go back to Shaw’s and have them custom make the band that I want :)

Great rings and Great deal!

We experienced the exact same situation. My husband was interested in the same ring, but when we saw it at the jewelery store, it was like $400. We ended up ordering it online for $50, with free shipping! I wonder why there’s such a mark-up on tungsten?

Our rings do not match- mine is platinum and my FI’s is titanium. My wedding band matches my engagement ring because he had it made, so there was no choice in bands. But he chose it to have two- so it’ll be twice as sparkly! :)

My rings didn’t come as a set, but I’m happy they match. :)

Yeah, we did the same thing and ordered both of our bands off of Ebay after searching through several overpriced jewelry stores. It sounds so tacky, but we got great deals on them both.

On a different note, thanks so much for finding and posting this video about getting a tungsten ring off of someone’s finger. I was a little worried about that and now I feel so much better!!

Wow, Zales is more expensive than a family owned jewelry store I use. More expensive by $100- $200. Great job finding the same ring for way cheaper!

@Soon2BeeMrsLewis: I can’t find a band to fit under my e-ring either! It’s an antique and the curved bands don’t even work! I’m thinking that I might have to put the engagement ring on my left hand and just get a band for the left… but I really don’t want to do that!
