A Case of the Greens

June 2nd, 2009 @ 10:32 am by Mrs. Stiletto

Hi, it’s me again - stressing out and over-thinking flowers. I thought I had it settled, and had posted about our final floral decisions. I’m not meeting with our florist until mid-July, but I wanted to have my mind made up sooner rather than later.

I was doing really well until we finally decided on a tie for Mr. S to wear. We’d thought it would be fun to give him a bold green tie, and for the groomsmen to wear black and white ties. So we found this tie on ties.com:

Perfect! It’s going to look great with his tux. To see everything together, I made this handy little collage of the tie, the bridesmaids’ shoes, bouquet inspiration, and groomsmen’s boutonnieres:

The green hypericum berries that I thought were so perfect, stick out like a sore thumb! Ew. I know it’s important to keep in mind that the berries won’t be directly against the green of the shoes or tie. Mr. S will be having a white boutonniere with the green tie; the groomsmen will be having a black and white tie with the berry boutonniere. But still. I’m not sure I’m feeling it. Ahh! Stupid green. This green has made things terribly hard in the floral scheme of things.

Scouting around, I found another boutonniere inspiration - green hydrangea (which is great, as the bouquets will have white hydrangea!):

Does the green hydrangea look better? Because if it does, we can easily integrate some green hydrangea into the bridesmaids’ bouquets (although I’ve been debating on adding more color into my bouquet; I think I’m going to stick to my guns and keep it all white). Quite frankly, I didn’t think hydrangeas would really work for boutonnieres, but apparently they do. I thought they’d be too delicate.

So, ladies, I need your input!

I think both are pretty, but the hydrangea is really nice. We all have ADD moments in wedding planning. It’s ok to switch! :)

I think it depends on the look you’re hoping to achieve. Hydrangeas are softer, so I think they need a bold flower around (like a dahlia) if you’re going for the “pow!” factor. But the berries on their own are striking and make a statement!

i would keep the berries and get a new tie. maybe one with narrower stripes that incorporate lighter greens.

Greens are like blues (of course!)…if they aren’t just right, they clash! Personally, I think the beautiful green you’ve chosen will clash terribly with the “limey” greens…I suggest taking the tie to a florist and confirm that the green you’re choosing doesn’t clash. Hosta leaves might well be in that color group…try it!

Just an FYI- I had hydrengas and they wilt VERY fast.

If you want to go with the hydrangeas, I would suggest white instead of the light green. The light green from the photo really contrasts with the vibrant green tie.

i love the hydrangeas! But I agree with Mojito, that tie is so bright that maybe you should do white hydrangeas…

Ooh, I love all the feedback :) I have to keep in mind that only Mr. S will be wearing the green tie and he’ll definitely be wearing a white bout., so the green options are for the groomsmen and ushers, who are wearing black and white ties. This silly green has been a struggle overall…oh if I could turn back time, ha!

Why don’t you use white hydrangea for the bout? His tie is already bold - and there’s no use hitting your head against the wall to match the greens… use white, and then you and he will match!

I would have voted for the switch, but I didn’t because hydrangea tend to wilt easily, so you don’t want him with a sad looking bout.

Since the green is only for the groomsmen and ushers I’d keep the berries. As long as they aren’t within 3 inches of each other it’ll look great.

I love the berries. I know you’re having hydrangea in the bouquetsm but the berries will definitely pop with his green tie!

Do both! That’s what I ended up doing for my fiance’s bout. Credit to Martha Stewart, of course. Check out the back pages of the current issue - there’s a bout with the berries and white hydrangea on one of the vendor list pages. Just change the white hydrangea to green!

YAY for kelly green!! I’m a bit biased because it’s one of our colors, too. :)

I say no to the hydrangea… only because it can wilt easily. I would stick with the hypericum berries because they will withstand the hugging.

What about using the same design as the hypericum one, but use as darker green leaf and WHITE berries?
