About Mrs. Bruschetta

Cooperation

June 2nd, 2009 @ 4:23 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

Dear Mother Nature,

A bride’s wedding day attire and accessories comprise a carefully-orchestrated look. A lace-edged veil highlights delicate Alencon details on a gown. Swarovski crystals twinkle and shimmer from a glimmering necklace that offsets an otherwise simple sheath. Subtle silver peep toes and a canary yellow crinoline add unexpected pizazz to a taffeta tea length dress.

Each of these styles is perfection. But what happens when you gift a particularly breezy day to the happy couple? There was a time when I believed wacky, windy weather would ruin the impeccability of the bride — and, in the process, the photographs commemorating the wedding day. I know, I know, that’s just crazy! In my defense, I had this bizarre idea before discovering wedding and photography blogs. I’ve long since changed my tack — I love the idea of capturing the wedding day exactly as it occurs, wind gusts and all. But a small part of me still coveted the guarantee of predictable weather for my own outdoor shots.

And then, I saw it. A striking picture, with one snappy line of commentary: “I told you that veil was cooperating.”

Huh. Cooperating?

I’m tickled by the idea that the veil, while perched atop the bride’s head, is really in cahoots with the photographers. And clearly, you’re an abettor, providing a zephyr that turns an ordinary moment extraordinary, and elevates the extraordinary to decidedly poignant.

I mean, seriously. Look at the amazing work you’ve done with countless wedding veils — no matter the length or style.

Well played, Mother Nature. I’ll be prepared with hairspray aplenty, and extra bobby pins to keep my ’do in place. I just have one small request: Do you think you’ll have a gust or two to spare in Philly at the end of August?

Fondly,

Miss Bruschetta

I like the look of the ones that have obviously been b/c of the wind/nature but a lot of these are clearly staged. I can almost see the photographer’s assistant with their hand just dropping the veil or pulling it to the side. For me this kind of makes the pics cheesy.

It was a bit of a pain, but sooooo pretty.

I like the fact that you noticed how beautiful a breeze can be…as I read you note… I thought that instead of giving Mother Nature credit for the breeze… why not include her Creator… Our Heavenly Father who indeed does know that those photos are being snapped… and is often the most honored guest invited to the celebration! God is Good all the Time!!! ;)

@BaghdadBride: Really? I beg to differ. When else besides your wedding day will you have a beautiful (short, medium or long) pieces of tulle attached to your hair? I say play with it and have fun — if the breeze isn’t cooperating, I’m totally okay with a staged shot.

I commented on a shot in my photographer’s portfolio and told him that I hoped the wind and veil cooperated for me. He assured me that the look was staged and that no matter what the weather did, I too would have the “breeze off the Hudson” shot (provided one of my ‘maids could move fast enough to get out of the frame). :)

I’m definitely going to stage it if the weather does not cooperate. I think it looks pretty either way.

My July 19th date, I am sure, will be hot. We we’re getting married outside- and cocktail hour is outside to boot! But, I L-O-V-E the wind in the veil pictures! I am wishing I was wearing a long veil instead of a cage veil to do those! :)

Those are the kind of pictures that encouraged me to get a veil!! I hope there’s a few like that in my bridals… or the day of, either!

Don’t worry, I would say almost 100% of those are staged and have nothing to do with Mother Nature. You will get your floaty veil pic, just talk to your photographer about it.

My photographers staged ALL of my veil-in-the-wind shots– and it was, by far, one of the funnest moments, especially when three photographers are all taking turns throwing the veil up, humourously trash-talking each other on who threw the veil best and a bride and groom laughing their heads off over the photographer’s antics. ;) Of course, there were a couple of shots where I and the hubby managed to compose ourselves and look dreamy with the veil flying ;)

Love these shots! Hopefully the wind cooperates with you, but if not, you can always have a little assistance from your photographer, we did for some of mine, but they still turned out great!

Mine were staged too, but I did a shoot the other day where the wind went so nuts I had to have someone holding the veil down so that it didn’t pull the bride’s hair out by the roots! She looks really pained in some of the shots :-) But it worked great for the ones where we detached the veil and had her hold it above her head. No staging required there!

I’m from Philly, and though I hope you get the gust of your dreams, I have trouble seeing it! It’s going to be warm and muggy-licious in the city. However, if anyone’s going to get a gust or two, it’s a bee! :)

I love these shots! I was originally thinking not about wearing a veil. especially with an outdoor August wedding, but then my soon to be mother in law sent me hers. I loved it before I even fully took it out of the box! I’ve never seen anything like it. Its beautiful, matches my dress perfectly, and could not have any more of a perfect vintage feel to it! Did I already mention that I can’t wait to wear it?

Thanks for sharing the photos and good luck!
