About Mrs. Bunny

Labor of Love

June 2nd, 2009 @ 12:32 pm by Mrs. Bunny

I was stuck and inspiration-less for so long when it came to invites, and then, when we picked our envelopes a few weeks ago, the ball was set rolling. Now we’re just days away of having everything we need.

Envelopes? Check! Address list? Check! Paper? On order! RSVPs? Thanks to my amazing MOH Sunny Bunny, absolutely CHECK!

A few summers ago, I bought a lot of about 50 romantic antique postcards off eBay on a whim. They are one of the best buys I’ve ever made and are the inspiration for the whole wedding.

My original plan for RSVPs was to take about six of the postcards I really loved and have 25 copies of each printed.

But my sister Sunny was adamant. Wouldn’t it be so much cooler to have real antique cards? Each an original design for the RSVPs? I could encourage guests to write notes on them and display them at the wedding, ala the photo below from Inspired Goodness:

‘Yeah, sure,’ I thought. Because of course, that would be awesome. But I’m trying so hard not to stress, and who has the time or energy to go sorting through those massive boxes of postcards at antique stores looking for appropriate cards that aren’t written on?

So I told her to go right ahead, if she wanted to. I gave her a $50 budget and said I needed around 150 cards.

And she did it. She spent two afternoons sorting through postcards at an L.A.-area antique store and struck a deal with the owner. Last week, she mailed me a package full of vintage postcard-goodness.

Sunny, you’re incredible. Thanks for being the best MOH a girl could ask for, in spite of the 2,250 miles between us.

And now, a sneak peek of our invitations:

Ingredients

  • 150 Kraft paper envelopes from Create For Less
  • 6 packs of Luxe Cream cover weight paper from PaperSource
  • 150 vintage postcards handpicked from an antique store in Monrovia, Ca.
  • 1 Martha Stewart “simple scallop” edge punch

Add a brand new typewriter ribbon, Adobe InDesign, printing and cutting from Kinko’s, and engagement photos, stir well, and you have our invites!

If you DIYed your invites, did you delegate any part of them?

Oh I can’t wait to see them!
I didn’t completly delegate, but enlisted my friend to help. We spent the better part of a Saturday watching movies and working on them. It would have taken me triple to time without her!

I made one as a model, and the groom made the rest. Does that count?

My lovely Graphic designer friend looked over my invitations and gave them the stamp of approval, and my Fiance helped me round the corners. Other than that it was all me.

I can’t wait to see the finished product!

That’s exactly what we did for our RSVPs! I loved it and we got so many compliments from guests. When possible, I tried to match the postcard up with the recipient–by location, content, or sense of humor. It took longer, but I can’t tell you how many people called me to say things like “I love the Espanol on the card” (from a Spanish teacher at my school) or “How in the world did you find a vintage postcard featuring the park down the street from my apartment” (my cousin in Brooklyn). And Eric’s guy friends got a huge kick out of the pin-up girl ones we found (can you say “Jackpot!”). Obviously we couldn’t do it for everyone, but it was fun to try. I wanted to display them at the reception like you have in your picture, but ran out of time. Instead, my brother arranged them beautifully under on the “guestbook” table (also postcards… I was a little obsessed) under a sheet of plexiglass, so guests could see them en masse.

That is freakin’ awesome!! How cool is she for doing that? You’re going to be able to keep them all as a fun keepsake, too.

sweet! we’re using postcards in lieu of a guestbook, but my FH made them, with maps of places we’ve visited + photos of us in those places as “postage stamps” on the back.
