It’s Invite Time!

June 3rd, 2009 @ 3:27 pm by Mrs. Latte

The reply cards are rollin’ in, so that means two things: 1. The wedding is really happening! And 2. It’s time to reveal our invites! Woohoo!

Like I mentioned in my previous post, Irene from Rinka and Ink saved the day with her letterpress and design skills. She created these lovely invitations and reply cards for us:

We decided to go with the pink/brown combo for the invitations, and the green/brown combo for the reply cards. I love the way they incorporate all of our wedding colors! Mmmm… letterpress. Don’t you just want to reach out and touch them?

Irene got us chocolate brown envelopes for both the invitations and reply cards. I lined the A7 envelopes with wrapping paper I found in the PaperSource sale aisle. It’s called “Ice Cream Stripes” and it was 50% off! Yum and yum.

A little bit o’ tracing…

A little bit o’ cutting…

A little bit o’ punching…

A little bit o’ mama and papa labor…

And voila! Pretty liners!

I bought A7.5 outer envelopes* from the PaperSource and created wraparound labels. I love the clean and modern feel they give off. The “calligraphy” was individually done by my computer and printer. They call it “Garamond” and “Mahogany Script.” They did a great job, huh? Very consistent.

Irene was SUPER sweet and actually allowed me to use the heart graphic she designed! I was having a hard time finding a graphic that was similar to hers, and she came to my rescue (yet again!) and gave me hers. Thanks, Irene!!! I printed out the labels, ran them through my Xyron machine, cut each one out with my paper cutter, and used my scoring blade to create a crease in each label for a clean fold. This was rough. My eyes and hands are still cursing me for the hours I spent on this step. But I think my calloused hands and cross-eyed eyes were worth it… I love how they came out!

Computer and Printer refused to print legibly on the brown inner envelope, so I had to get creative and made stickers for the names. It also did double-duty and kept the envelopes closed.

The entire invitation suite:

Our stamps of choice? The 61-cent wedding cake stamp. It was either those, or the Richard Wright stamps. I didn’t know who he was, so I went with the cake. Cake, I know… all too well.

And the 44-cent Simpsons stamp. With the price increase, there weren’t many choices. I wasn’t feeling the wedding rings or the new king and queen love stamps. I thought the Simpsons would be fun and would add some color to the brown envelopes. Since then, I see that USPS released their 44-cent Celebration stamp… if only I had procrastinated a little bit longer on these invitations, they would’ve been MINE.

It’s been fun opening up my mailbox and seeing all the little brown envelopes inside. So far, there haven’t been any surprise replies from our guests. Most have been yesses… but I’m wondering if that is typically how they come in. Did you find that your yes replies came before the nos?

* Most PS stores don’t carry this size envelope, but they can place an order for you, or you can buy them online. They are also available in more colors than are shown on their website.

Your invites look great! And I really like the contrast that the liners provide–I think this has convinced me that I need to line my invite envelopes too!

So cute! Love the letterpress.

All our “no’s” came in the last couple weeks before the rsvp deadline (and after).

@smilez: Totally not a dumb question. I used double sided tape. I tried using different types of adhesives (glue, sticky dots) but the tape worked best and was the easiest to use.

Miss Latte, may I ask what kind of paper you used for the invites? I’m making that decision RIGHT NOW!

Did you use a template to trace/measure the liners? I would love to line my envelopes but I’m not sure how to go about it. Thanks!

Love your invitations and the lining!
We got mostly yes’s but some no’s in the beginning. The majority of the no’s were receieved toward the middle of the due date and alot at the end. Still havent received about 20 “no’s” (Due date was June 1st) but we know for sure they arent coming. But seriously what is so hard about sending back a postcard that already has a stamp, writing your name and checking “declines with regret”!?!?

@Natalie: I used the A7 liner template that I had from a Paper Source kit. I had to tweak them a little to perfectly match the Crane’s envelopes. But they are easy to make without the kit. Just cut the paper a little smaller than the envelope with the flap open…looks kind of like a house. Then use that as your template.

I am really falling in love with this wraparound label! So beautiful! I love it!

Your invites are so pretty. The letterpress is absolute yum. I had already convinced myself that I do not have to have letterpress. Repeat - I do not have to have letterpress. Maybe if I tell myself enough times, I’ll believe it. ;)

SO beautiful! My invites were finished a few nites ago and were off to their new homes (all hand stamped by my fiance!) yesterday… I can’t wait to start gettin my little envelopes back. We also lined all our envelopes, wasn’t difficult, but tedious to say the least… :-)

They are gorgeous! So this might be a dumb question too, but where do you tape the liners to the envelope? When I receive mail, I use a letter opener to open so I’m envisioning a need to adhere the liner to the square part of the envelope as well as the tip of the triangle so it stays put when the envelope is sliced with the letter opener. Am I overthinking this?! Thanks :)

@Headuh: I used double sided tape.
@Miss Hot Sauce: I used to do the same thing…but then caved. Good luck!!!
@ms boardwalk: Thank you! I didn’t even notice the ring in the pictures until people started commenting…
@nvybaby82: Congratulations on getting them out! And your finance is a keeper…hand-stamping all those invites!
@bmaid5: I taped as close as possible to the top edges of the lienr (the 2 edges that create the “roof” of the house). Since they’re inner envelopes, they usually aren’t sealed so no need for a letter opener! If you’re lining your outer envelopes, I would probably tape right along the creases of the liner.

I LOVE the envelope liners! Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to do them? (I know I know, it looks obvious, but I am severely DIY-challenged)

Where did you get the A7 liner form to trace? What kind of paper cutter/puncher thingy did you use? (What IS that puncher thingy?) How did you seal them in the envelope - double sided tape? Glue?

@DubPub: I actually cut them out of 8.5×11 paper. I don’t remember the actual dimensions right now but I’ll update you when I get home tonight.
@DCKate: I bought the template from the Paper Source and used a normal paper cutter (mine is Fiskars) to cut them. The weird blue puncher is a corner punch…rounds corners with one punch! I used double-sided tape to adhere them to the envelope.

Some bees have posted about DIY liners in the past…Lemonade used the Paper Source template(http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/08/26/save-the-dates-13/), and Champagne and Sundae made their own templates (http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/09/29/diy-envelope-lining-and-our-std-details/, http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/07/02/invitation-liners/). Good luck!

I adore some latte and letterpress! Your invitations came out darn purty! and I love how mama and papa latte joined in on the fun (fun, yah?) :) How relieved you must feel to check that off your list. I know I’m chillin’ these days…recovering from the close of project invitations.
