About Mrs. Joey

The Bouquet Buzz

June 4th, 2009 @ 12:00 pm by Mrs. Joey

From the beginning, I knew I wanted to do the flower centerpieces myself. I love flowers, and in another life I would have loved to be a florist. My plan is to head down to Pike Place Market or a store with an amazing flower selection (Trader Joe’s or Metropolitan Market) the day before the wedding and pick up flowers for my bouquet and for my MOH’s, as well. I wasn’t sure what I wanted, except that I wanted it to be simple (easy to make with clean lines) and modern.

Then I saw this, and fell in love.

It’s perfect.

Black and white, simple, elegant, and modern looking. I hunted around to find out what kind of flower it was and if it would be in season. Luck! Martha said it was available all year long. And then… disappointment. Every other website said December through April. Poop!

So now I’m looking for new inspiration. So far, here’s what I came up with:

I really like the last one. I have no idea what the flowers are. Anyone?

I’m also hitting up my special imaginary man, Craig, and his list, to see if I can find a florist on the cheap.

So now I’m trying to come up with some bouquet inspirations. My criteria? Simple (easy to make and clean lines), white or yellow (doesn’t matter which) and flowers in season. Links? Ideas?

I think it’s Ranunculus, too.

What are the small buds in between the Rans in the last picture?

I like your floral sensibility Joey!

With those small buds it’s really hard to tell. Could they be early hydrangea buds?

I’m sad because I have tons of peonies in my garden, but they’re blooming right now instead of for my wedding :(

Anyone want some gorgeous peonies for your June wedding and live in Seattle?

Anyone know what the filler buds are? And anyone know if Anemones really are available year round?

I coveted anemones too, but can’t have them! :-( So, I’m largely relying on dahlias and ranunculus(es). (Ranunculi?) ;-)

Pike’s Place Market is a fabulous place to get your flowers! They have such elegant, fresh, healthy flowers! Great idea…those working the booth could probably help you put the flowers together, they would love that!

@MissJoey - depends on your florst. Mine is getting them for my September 12 wedding. They are available, but the oetals are pretty thin and they might have to order more than they plan on using. Their PEAK season is December thru April, but they can be had :) Someone posted some links the other day for buls anemones and for an etsy seller (fake, but beautiful) one sec ill grab them and post here

I’m going the same route as you. I’m super picky about what flowers I end up with but I’m trying guess what will be at the farmers market in September. Do you know of a website that just says by month what’s in season?

I’m working with a woman who sells her flowers at a farmers market in Maine. A recommendation I’d have is to contact a potential vendor at Pike’s Place or yrou favorite Seattle farmers market and see what they expect to have in season - they can reserve your preferred flower and then you can be sure they don’t run out and you might be able to even negotiate a lower price if you committ ahead of time.

Hi Miss Joey,
I’m a Seattle bride too. I’m getting married in July and getting all of my bouquets, bouts, and corsages at Metropolitan Market on Queen Anne - working with Stacey. She is awesome — really great about suggesting alternative flowers that are similar, but in-season and therefore cheaper. My bouquet is going to be white ranunculus, lisianthus, hydrangea, garden roses, and freesia - PM me if you want more info on prices, etc. The bridal bouquet is more expensive but the bridesmaids are pretty reasonable.
Good luck!
Anne

I was in LOVE with anemones too but found there is a silver lining…they bruise really easily. I get so mad though because they are everywhere in bridal photos!!

My florist is using a lot of lisianthus…soft, available, seasonal, and easy on the budget!

The big flowers, as many have noted, are Ranunculus. Not sure about the small buds…Honestly they remind me of baby’s breath though I’m sure its not.

I am SOOO loving the idea of just heading to the market to get flowers the day before. I live in Seattle too and that is totally my plan!

I love your inspiration flowers! Especially that last arrangement… I’m not sure what the smaller buds are, but like Elizabeth they remind me of baby’s breather. Even if they aren’t baby’s breathe, I think it would give a very similar look :)

Love the ranunculus of the last bouquet. That’s the main flower we’re going with… all whites: ranunculus, football mums, and garden roses. It’s so much easier for me to DIY with it being monochromatic.

I like the idea of buying the flowers at a local market for the centerpieces…but for the bouquets- how do you tie them together tightly so they last the whole day?

It’s definitely not babys breath. I actually think your filler flower might be called Limonium.

The filler flowers kind of look like yarrow to me…I usually see it in yellow but comes in lots of colors. Can’t tell for sure since the pictures so little though.
