Florals for the Front

June 5th, 2009 @ 5:36 pm by Mrs. Deviled Egg

Our ceremony room was a little bit of a decorating challenge. Its maroon carpet and lack of lighting really made the place seem dark and more suited for a fall or winter wedding. To help spring-ify the place, I put together some floral arrangements to display in the front.

Just like I did for our unity candle and door wreaths, I used silk flowers purchased at clearance prices last summer. I also snatched up two matching urn-style containers at Michaels for just under $5 each.

I started by placing floral foam into each container and making sure it was in secure by using hot glue and smaller wedges of floral foam. From there, I divided up my floral stems so the arrangements would be identical and just started placing each stem in the foam, cutting them to specific heights as desired.

Here is a photo of one of the finished arrangements:

Each of these large arrangements were placed on a pedestal between the pillars in the front of our ceremony room. Outside of the wreaths I made to hand on the doors, these arrangements were the only decoration in the room. I’m glad I went with simple on this one. I had originally planned to include pew bows or decor (more like chair bows in our case), but I didn’t want it to make the room look too cluttered. I think the basic florals in the front complemented the natural beauty of the room perfectly, while drawing guests’ eyes to the front and away from the dark carpet.

This picture is a little dark, but you get the idea of how they looked. The desks behind the florals were removed before the ceremony. This picture was taken before we started our rehearsal. Both photos in the post were taken by my FSIL Regan.

After the ceremony, the arrangements were moved to the lobby, where we had our reception. They were placed on each side of the DJ’s table to distract from his equipment and dress up the dance floor. I was really pleased with how they turned out and was glad we were able to enjoy them at both wedding functions! I got a lot of compliments on them (not bad for my first major attempt at floral arranging) and several people thought they were real, including my dad. :-)

What decorative elements are you using in first in your ceremony, and then moving to your reception?

Our paper flower pomanders! I hung them on shepherd hooks along the aisle at the ceremony and my Mum moved them to the entry way of our reception space in between the ceremony and the reception.
