Mrs. Bear Cub's Picture
Mrs. Cub, Chile/Portland Age and Occupation: 26, Astronomer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Astronomer Engagement Date: May 10, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Westwind YWCA camp About Me: I'm a small-town girl who's making a living in Chile, with her heart in the Pacific Northwest. I grew up in Southern California, went to high school in Texas, grad school in New Mexico, and now I can't wait to settle down in Oregon! I love pears, hazelnuts, knitting, traveling, running, baking, and long talks on the phone with good friends. I'm planning my Oregon coast summer camp wedding while abroad with my best friend - I'm always at home when I'm with him!
About Mrs. Bear Cub

I want a KitchenAid like little kids want to stick their fingers in the wedding cake!

Doesn’t it seem like everyone has a KitchenAid on their registry these days? I really need one, too! I baked brioche and sourdough bread from scratch this weekend, all using my hands. Kneading is tuff stuff!
Sometimes I wonder, though, if my kitchen gadget fiending type-casts me as uber-white. We’re under pretty hefty pressure, apparently, to like cooking!

White people like a lot of stuff, and you can check out the rest of the list here - what a great way to get to know another whitey, like me! (I like that it’s a list. As a whitey myself, this helps. We like lists.)

… In order for them to truly enter into whitedom, they need to own the holy grail of white kitchens - the KitchenAid stand mixer (above). They will match this mixer to their kitchen’s color scheme and it will make up the focal point. And much like many religious artifacts, it will remain untouched for months and even years, sitting on the counter to be admired as a testament to their lifestyle.

(From this guy)

I don’t know where this strong urge is coming from - to want this paddle-tongued steel throne! I know I want it in slate though. It’ll probably match my other new kitchen gadgets.

*note - I really really do want a KitchenAid stand mixer! Sooooo bad!

What color KitchenAid are you putting on your registry? How do you plan to worship your KitchenAid?

I received my red beauty from my mom as a threat to start baking and cooking. Luckily I didn’t have to wait to get wed to get one because I went from a repitoire of grilled cheese and break and bake cookies to gourmet! Moms really do know best.

we bit the bullet and have a gorgeous, gorgeous bright yellow one in our kitchen, and we aren’t even engaged :) (hey, we needed a mixer to make cookies and wanted a pasta maker too!) but hahaha, it is the “focal point” of our tiny little apartment kitchen (it’s “too heavy” to put away when it’s not being used, even if it does take up a lot of precious counter space! hehe…) i keep saying “no le creuset” until the wedding registry, and hoping he gets the hint :)

A stainless steel one! We both love to cook, and my fiance makes his own homemade bread and pizza dough, so our current mixer gets a lot of use. It’s on it’s last legs though, hence the reason we want a Kitchenaid.

I got a white one (because it was on sale). I wanted a pink one, but I’m perfectly OK with the one I have. I’m just happy to have one! It’s practical and it goes with the other appliances. I think all kitchen aid mixers should be proudly displayed on counters. My mom has hers on the counter, but covers it with a dust cover. People who visit always tell her that they would never cover that thing up, but leave it out to show it off.

@Miss Bear Cub: me too me too! but it’s the closest thing to an ultimatum i’m giving him, he keeps mentioning an outlet store where we can apparently get it at more reasonable prices, but i’ve put my foot down that we can’t get it ’til we make a registry. he’s an alpha-cook/foodie, so that’s my angle for now ;)

Mr. B and I got ours as a Christmas gift last year from his Ma….its beautiful and wouldnt trade it for the world! I think it may actually be the same as the one you posted…a bit of shimmery slate, but not shiney!…and its a lift, not a tilt…and its a Professional (lots o’power!)…

We make homemade bagels and its a miracle worker :) yay to being super white and domestic hah

We got ours in chrome. It is oh so beautiful, and we’ve already used it… but mostly we just adore it! I don’t know, though, if I’d characterize it as a one race/ethnicity thing. I think Kitchen Aid transcends racial/ethnic background ;)

I’m obviously not a real bride. Those stand-up mixers scare me. Which also must mean I am not really white. (Does this mean my skin will finally tan?)

P.S. - Christian Lander, the author of “Stuff White People Like” was just featured on SMP… well, he and his bride’s wedding anyhow! I was totally excited to see it. (everyone probably already knows that…but if you didn’t…. http://www.stylemepretty.com/2009/06/04/real-wedding-jess-and-christian/ )

I didn’t register for one, but my aunt gave us a Viking Stand Mixer as our first engagement gift. All I can say - WOW. I had no idea I even wanted one until I had it, and, for someone who doesn’t bake a lot, I use it all the time.

I actually broke the “cool” code and got a Sunbeam mixer. It’s stainless looking, and looks very retro. I looooove it.
I had to use my sisters kitchen aid once and didnt like the room I had to dump my ingredients in. But i hope you get it. mixers are a definite necesity in a kitchen :)

My FI & FPIL got me a BLOOOOOO one for Christmas a few years ago. It matches our kitchen and sits in a cabinate unused for most of the time - much to their dismay. I need to use it more but I just don’t have the energy, maybe this weekend though.
Love the whitey list! HAHA

I think if you will truly use it you should put it on your registry. I think … a lot of ppl put it on their registry bc it’s the IT thing to put on there. But if you will use it by all means put it on there! You might be surprised. :)
The FI got me one as a surprise a few years ago for Xmas. I LOOOOVE it. Use it all the time for baking, cooking. We want attachments for it like making pasta and stuffing sausage, etc, etc. KitchenAid attachments on registry. Awesome. =)

Being Mexican, lol, it makes it easier to kneed the maza when making tamales, cause trust me, that’s a PIA!! Keeping my fingers crossed! =) Hope you get yours too!!

I was pretty lucky…when I was in my early 20’s my mother bought me a white one and I swore it would only be in my kitchen for decorative purposes but I’ve actually USED it. Shocking to me because I thought I would never cook or bake and I find myself doing both. All I can say is it’s fabulous! My FMIL has a few of the attachments and has made her own ground meat and pasta and they turned out great. I really would have preferred a slate/silvery color but the white is fine and I can’t be picky.

Oooh I want one so bad! But I’ve resisted putting one on our registry. We live in a tiny house (800 sq feet) so counter space is at a premium. But the thing is, I would use it and abuse it with all my might! But between the space issue and it being so dang expensive, I just can’t bring myself to register for it. Oh but if I did, it would be in the cobalt blue.

I’m not white, but I can definitely relate to a lot of things on that list, including the love of the KitchenAid mixer! I don’t quite know what color my FI and I would want to get just yet–they’re all so pretty. ;)

p.s.- My cousin and I actually bought the SWPL book after “reading” it randomly at an airport bookstore and couldn’t put it down haha. I agree with doctorgirl and Miss BC–It’s totally relatable to all races of people (although there did seem to be a “commonality,” if that makes sense). I think they made that the title just to grab people’s attention.

and i’m planning on getting an apple green color one too. i think i’ll splurge and buy it for myself for a birthday or “happy friday” gift instead of waiting to get engaged. i just can’t wait that long. but currently i’m happy with the red one i helped my mom buy after i killed her old smalll mixer with some gingerbread cookie dough.

I registired but didn’t get.. :(
Which is understandable since its pricey but one can hope. I drooled and oogled at pictures and stalke CL on a daily basis.
And one magical day this week as fate would have it, someone posted a purple beauty for 130. Long story short it cost me 120 all 3 attachments 2 bowls and a splash guard. It sits beautifully on my counter when I am not using it…THe end.

Maybe that’s why I don’t get the point of the Kitchen Aid mixer… I’m not white :) No but seriously… I’m to avid of a baker to have a mixer like this… I utilize several handheld mixers with various bowls for different batters… it’s the perfect system when baking in large quantities :)

My mom offered to get us the Kitchenaid mixer as our wedding gift before I even had a chance to register for it. I like the way she thinks! We’re getting the stainless steel colored one to match our appliances (because I’m OCD and things have to match, ha ha!)

Also I saw a book version of “Stuff White People Like” at Urban Outfitters recently, for anyone who would like to use that humor as coffee table adornment. ;-)

Ours is sparkly black (forgot what it’s called) and Mr. Peng uses it all the time to make cookies! I wish I got apple green but I got greedy when it came in the mail (the black one, i forgot to switch the color) and opened it and used it. Doiiii.

I registered for the sparkly black one too (it’s onyx, I think, Mrs. Peng), but my uncle who is the official buyer-of-KitchenAids-for-niece’s-weddings (he got my cousin one too) got me the same white one he got my cousin. Sigh. Actually, none of my proposed color scheme for my kitchen worked out — it was going to be black and blue, but we ended up with NO blue anything, black utensil crock and flour/sugar canisters (hindsight: BAD! is now smudgy with white floury fingerprints!) and everything else is white… including the walls which the landlord was SUPPOSED to paint yellow, but are now a dingy grey because I set the stove on fire. LOL, sorry, stream-of-consciousness commenting. Must be lunch time.

I’m a part-time pastry chef and I’ve had my KitchenAid for 8 years, so obviously I am not registering for one! But I AM registering for some pretty high-end All-Clad cookware, Le Creuset pieces, and new bakeware. I cook and bake a LOT (and I consider myself to be pretty good at both), so I figured that if people who don’t know how to do anything in the kitchen register for expensive kitchen items (I can’t tell you how many people I know whose idea of dinner is ordering takeout yet they have KA mixers and Wusthof knives), I should definitely register for the good stuff! Sometimes I think I should register for something a little less expensive, but then I remember that we need to eat every day so it’s worth it :)

OMG I so have that and Le Creuset on our registry too!! The mixer in black or chrome, and the le creuset I really want in the caribbean but its hard to find, so I may have to go with a neutral color since we don’t have our house yet. But the slate is a strong contender since it has meaning :)

I have the red one - but we didn’t register for it. He bought it for me for my birthday one year after I kept whining about how much easier it would be for me to make icing for birthday cakes if I didn’t have to use the stupid hand mixer.
