Mrs. Gummi Bear's Picture
Mrs. Gummi Bear, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Japanese Importer/Illustrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Game Developer/Programmer Engagement Date: April 15, 2006 Wedding Date: October 13, 2007 Blogging Since: June 19, 2007 Venue: Organic farm an hour from San Francisco About Me: I live for anthropologie, design blogs, sweets, japanese zakka, and vintage goods. We just bought our first home together and live with our two puppies and cat - it's a strange mixture of vintage, high-tech (we have 7 computers and 21 video game systems in all), and a whole lot of fur. Our wedding tries to embody the Japanese idea of "slow life", which is truly taking the time to enjoy food, company, and your environment!
About Mrs. Gummi Bear

It’s been a really long time since I’ve posted, but I swear I have something relevant to post about.

Something you may or may not know is that during the entire 18 months that we planned our wedding, (we planned for a hella* long time) Mr. GB was unemployed. I have mentioned that he did as much planning as I did, he was at every meeting, did every craft with me, and was actually the point of contact for all our vendors. Well, he had no freakin’ excuse not to be there because he didn’t have anywhere else to be! But seeing as our wedding was no longer able to rely on Mr. GB having any regular income, we blew our budget on buying our home (and decorating, because I can’t stop myself) and our wedding.

That meant no honeymoon. Instead, we went on our minimoon to Tokyo to visit friends, get a post-nuptial puppy**, and eat. Mainly eat. Eat things to make me gain the pounds that I’m supposed to gain over the next 40 years of marriage in about a week. No point in hiding what Mr. GB would have to lie next to for the rest of his life; I’ll all about ruing the mystique early. Like peeing with the door open, I generally do that within a week of dating someone… usually when they’re brushing their teeth and can’t escape. I know, I’m so romantic.

People seemed to pity us and kept telling us they felt bad we weren’t going on a honeymoon. They felt terrible asking where we were going, only to find out we weren’t going anywhere. We got a lot of those, “Oh…. but… you’ll have PLENTY of time later!” comments trying to throw out a ladder of sunshine from the deep ditch they felt they had fallen into.

Honestly, I can’t imagine having done it any other way.

Yes, I admit, the idea of being whisked off to some far off destination immediately after the wedding was enchanting, but… I was also very very tired and lazy. After over 1.5 years of marriage, a vacation was just what we needed. We’ve had a rough year of bad luck and terrible life events, and with the excitement of wedding planning gone and the day to day work life set back in, it was a really welcome vacation to just get away from it all. It was perfect timing.

We spent half the time in London and Paris, where I shopped and went crazy seeing friends, and the other half was Mr. GB’s trip, where we went to Santorini and did absolutely nothing. Except eat. Mr. GB has always dreamed of going to Greece, and his dreams mostly consisted of floating pieces of lamb, feta, and olives swirling around him.

pre-breakfast cat visit

I honestly believe the highlight of our trip was the friendly group of Oia animals that lived on the island. In the evenings, friendly dogs would just follow us around the street, and we had more than one breakfast with kitties begging for turkey. I happily obliged, as I missed my pets and… well, I didn’t need that much turkey. Our FAVORITE animal was dubbed “pooter cat”. As the name suggests, pooter cat had some serious gas. He’d coming in and immediately fart. He also had a nerve disorder, so half his face drooped into a perma-scowl. It only enhanced his awesomeness. Maybe other couples would have thrown out stank cat, but his friendliness and relaxed nature (by which I mean relaxed in passing gas a LOT) made him a welcome addition to our vacation.

Well, we’re back and ready to face both of us being in “crunch” at work, being mid-escrow on the purchase of our new home… and trying to either rent or sell our current place (still working on that). The stress we returned to seems a little more tolerable.

The moral of the story is, you don’t need to take an immediate honeymoon. In fact, I feel like it really meant more to us now than it would have if we had gone right away. And also to have a truly amazing marriage and honeymoon, you should pee with the door open with a farting cat walking around your suite.

*just in case you forgot I was a NorCal bee.

**yes, we already own three puppies, but how can this not make up for a lack of honeymoon??

The cat who poots is truly hilarious. Your post is laugh out loud funny because:
1. I don’t know a lot of people outside my circle of friends and family who use the term “poot.” So you’re a woman after my own heart!
2. I don’t know a lot of people who would allow “smelly cat” to lounge around with them on their vacay. Or any other strays for that matter. Love it!
3. Mr. GB has “food fantasies”….I tell my husband all the time that we are so “fat minded.” We love food that much.

It sounds like you guys had a wonderful time. Great post!

@rachspiegel: we arrived on the 28th, so I think we just missed each other! Beautiful photos!

@Miss Bear Cub: may a farting cat bless you during your honeymoon. You may forget a lot of things in life, but you will always remember your very own pooter cat!

puppies make everything better! She’s actually over a year old in that video, she stopped growing really early and just got fluffier instead of larger.

@bellenga: she’s a long coat chihuahua. We have two long coats and a papillon.

@bellenga: havanese! we had one in our puppy class, so cute and sweet!

@Mrs. Penguin: glad to be back! How is your pup?

We, through an unfortunate turn of events were unable to take our honeymoon in Brazil this past week. I has been strangely devastating to us both. It’s terrible to have a week set aside to do something amazing only to come home and do nothing. I hope that our story ends as well as yours with us thinking we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

@avie designs: I imagine it will mean that much more to you the way it did for us. The past will be in the past, it may still be sad to think about it, but you’ll have gotten through it together and it will really be a reward for everything you went through. That’s how Mr. GB and I felt, even though we didn’t know the horrible things that were going to happen to us, when we left on our trip we really felt like we had made it, and that we earned it.

Yay! So glad to hear from you!
You are one of my two favourite bees of all time. I was sorely missing your posts - the quirkiness, craftiness, and general offbeat sense of humor.

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had a rough go of things, but it sounds like the trip went well so that’s good! Thanks for coming back to tell us about it!

Do you have another blog somewhere that we could follow you on? If so, I’d love to know what it is!

Also, does anyone know what happened to Mrs. Lovebug? Her personal blog seems to have gone down :( She was my other favourite bee.

<3 Gummi, I wish you nothing but awesomeness in the future, I hope your hard times have moved on!

Where did you stay in Santorini? I’m having the most miserable time trying to find a nice romantic but cheap place. Can anyone help?

I stayed at Astra Aptartments. They weren’t cheap, but not nearly as expensive as most other places. Try the message boards on tripadvisor.com they are full of great info and there are some knowledgeable local experts who can help you out.
