About Mrs. Glitter

Music for All Ages

June 5th, 2009 @ 12:31 pm by Mrs. Glitter

Our wedding will welcome guests from ages 1 to 85 years old. You can’t please everyone, especially when it comes to music, but I wanted our song list to appeal to a wide range of peeps. It’s tough because we have several older guests coming who are notorious for not dancing. We want everyone to have fun and get up and dance to at least a few songs! It is A PARTY after all.

We hope to create two different “moods” at the reception. During dinner, we will stay safe, classy, and upbeat with Sinatra-like music. After the meal, we want an infusion of current and old school songs. If our all-night open bar doesn’t encourage people to get loose, well then… it’s hopeless. :)

Here is a sampling of the tunes list we gave our DJ.

Dinnertime Music (Sinatra, Buble or similar… but nothing too cheesy to the point that we will feel like we are eating at one of those old Italian restaurants. I love those restaurants, but I don’t want to overdo it at dinner.)

  • Michael Buble – Sway
  • Michael Buble – Summer Wind
  • Michael Buble – Everything
  • Frank Sinatra – You Make me Feel So Young
  • Frank Sinatra- Nice ’N’ Easy
  • Frank Sinatra – Night and Day

Reception Music (Mr. G and I love hip hop amongst many other genres. But we have tamed our list down so that guests like my grandparents don’t run out covering their ears.)

  • Kanye West – Good Life
  • Michael Jackson – Rock with You
  • Michael Jackson – PYT
  • Neil Diamond – Sweet Caroline
  • Jason Mraz – I’m Yours
  • Jason Mraz – Lucky
  • Aretha Franklin – Respect
  • The Righteous Brothers – You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling
  • Jackson 5 – I Want You Back
  • Three Dog Night – Joy to the World
  • Al Green – Let’s Stay Together
  • Elton John – Bennie and the Jets
  • Billy Joel – It’s Still Rock n Roll to Me
  • John Mellencamp – Jack and Diane
  • Marvin Gaye – Let’s Get It On
  • Al Green – Let’s Stay Together
  • Diana Ross – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
  • Santana Feat. Rob Thomas – Smooth
  • Steve Miller Band – The Joker
  • The Temptations – My Girl
  • R. Kelly – Ignition (Remix)
  • Jagged Edge – Wifey - (How could we not?)
  • Jagged Edge – Where the Party At
  • Jagged Edge Feat. Run DMC – Let’s Get Married (Remix) - (Again, how could we not?)
  • T.I. Feat. Justin Timberlake – Dead And Gone
  • Justin Timberlake – Like I Love You
  • Justin Timberlake – Rock Your Body
  • Keri Hilson Feat. Kanye West & Ne-Yo – Knock You Down
  • Katy Perry - Hot N Cold
  • Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow
  • Leona Lewis – Better In Time

The list is a work in progress. I’m so excited for our reception - a chance to just sit back, relax, and enjoy everything. Mr. G’s one stipulation was that people don’t get bored and nod off during the reception. I hope we can achieve that goal…

Have you been gearing up your song list to appeal to different age groups? Are you worried the older crowd won’t dance?

We actually included a “Promise to dance if you play _______!” line on our RSVP cards. It was very helpful when it came to ensuring that we selected the right types of music for each age group, and was hilarious to read when the cards came back to us.
It looks like you’ve given a lot of thought to your guests musical tastes, and I am sure that they will dance the night away!

I love, love, love Michael Buble. He’s got a great voice and I enjoy his renditions of classic standards. I think I might play this type of music during our cocktail hour since we’re having a buffet reception. Or any suggestions?

Your music list sounds great! I don’t think anyone’s gonna nod off with those songs. Well, maybe the one-year old baby. All they do is eat, sleep and poop, right?! ;)

Golden139 it was so much fun! It did make the tone of our RSVP cards quite informal, but it was really fun! People LOVED them! I got so many with the reverse of the card just covered in song requests!
…someone actually requested the Bird Dance…but that still went on our ‘DO NOT PLAY!’ list!

I love that you are playing Wifey by Next…my FH and I danced to that at a party when we first started dating and we just knew someday we would be dancing to that at our wedding so when I gave the DJ some song requests for our wedding next weekend (yikes!!!) that was at the top of the list…great song!!
I totally approve of the list - it looks like what we will be playing. :-)

We had mostly classic dance tunes from the 70s, 80s, 90s and today which kept people dancing, and helped with the cross-generational thing. One tip? If you dance, they will dance. Once dnacing started, I was out there nearly the entire time. Every time I left the dance floor, people were less than captivated by it.

I’ve put FI in charge of music because he is obsessed with it, thinks he has impeccable taste, and has actually DJed often enough that he can handle it. That said I am really going to have to make sure he plays things that won’t make all the grandparents run for cover. Your list is great! I might steal a few suggestions to pass on!

This is actually very similar to what I did for my own wedding, and it worked out great! One awesome song for your reception that crowds of all ages love is: Runaround Sue. I would definitely add that! =)

Hahaha…Jagged Edge! That’s awesome, and you’re right–how could you not! Sounds like you have a list that everyone can dance to. I’m not gonna worry too much about what the older people don’t want to hear. We’re going to devote some time to playing some good ole Greek music, that should make them happy!

We aren’t having dancing but I’m still making sure that the music we play will be something all our guests can enjoy.
